I understand how it works sometimes, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. I just don't think it's fair that the principle of separation between church and state should be applied to an innocent poem a girl wrote for her grandfather, a veteran no less. The principle is there so the church (any church) won't interfere with the matters of state and vice versa. Should we really want it to be applied on this level too? That girl had every right to write the poem the way she wrote it, WITH the word God in it, because she thought it was appropriate. Even at her age she has some right to freedom of speech. So in principle it wasn't a separation of church and state issue, but they sure turned it into one.
