The internet is just a man made luxury for either communication with others or entertainment of some form(even some things that shouldn't be there in my opinion)
The internet depending on what you want from it can be good or bad, because say you don't have a series of an old show you liked, you could watch an episode on youtube most likely which can be good to cheer yourself up but there are some down sides the most common perhaps now is "cyber bullying" the internet makes it somewhat faster for someone to converse with someone and therefore it's easy to get uplifted or hurt emotion wise, especially considering that you can be criticized by more than just a few people at a time,it's always good to remember that the internet is nothing more than "a tool" it has no will of it's own you can turn off a social media device at anytime, log out from a site,or if someone is persistinh to harass you and it's getting to you in a site like this you can click ignore so as to not see what the person says so as to not have the feeling of hurt.
Many people and children tend to get "overreliant" on technology and so begin to forget that there is more to life than just entertainment or texting,it's often better if one has the opportunity to "talk" to people rather than putting one's life hanging upon something as simple as a text, with "verbal conversation" you can get a better grasp of how someone feels.
With any kind of socializing whether social media or not it's best to think on what God thinks of you"not people" so that you don't leave yourself vulnerable to get hurt by words, and also yes many who have provided you with advice are correct people can "fool a person" electronically posing to be something or someone they aren't,social media especially concerning the internet is what one could call a "grey area" or "place of confusion"and uncertainty",and sometimes even worse "a place of no accountability" because though people can be found out and punished for harassing someone or stealing personal information or so on,the internet since technically "noone owns it" a person can sometimes be cruel in someway to someone and not get punished, because with all the ways to make fake accounts and email addresses a person unfortunately may do something horrible and perhaps only the individual that they sought to hurt ends up with pain and suffering, just don't let social media decide how you feel about yourself because people can be cruel put your faith in God and not let your life be about what people say through technology,if you give people enough time they will try to find something wrong with you that isn't there, and delight in it because they can "be cowards" hiding behind a computer instead of speaking to someone "face to face",have God lead you and protect you and you'll be fine.
