I think it is shameful that he had to tell them that they could have at least said, "Thank you." That is just a sign of how "entitled' all three of those kids were raised.
Well looking at it from the point that maybe PRESIDENT Trump might not have even been made aware of the arrest of "common" citizens, you might be right.
the fact they were shoplifting IN China, indicates a level of ignorance that makes comments such as this little boy offered, an illustrated guide to the lack of comprehension so many have with regards to how good they really have it
a year in jail or even 6 months might have been an education had he survived it. daddy could be in the adjacent cell for good measure
ungrateful over privileged dimwit who has not learned a thing
of course Trump intervened. this little boy was not left to rot like Otto Warmbier with the N Koreans torturing him

Well yeah. Personally, I don't think he even should let people off for crimes they actually committed. But the fact that they didn't even show him a hint of gratitude for that grace...that's just like spitting in his face. What a shame.

For the life of me, I don't understand. Why would the President of the US, knowing that the boy's were guilty, even think about getting them released before they had been sentenced and spent a few weeks in the Chinese prison system?

Well, one of the basic principles of Escape Tactics (and it probably works the same here) is that the longer you wait to attempt to escape, the more difficult it becomes to effect it successfully.
One of my children took something from a store. He was arrested, and got to spend the night in Juvi. He also got to join the weekend street cleaning crew for four weekends. To make matters worse (for him), he had to pay for the item he took, along with court costs, and he didn't even get to keep the item.
Then Dad and Mama, grounded him for 30 days. He still calls it his T-shirt lesson. Consequences must be greater than the crime.
My view....they should have stood trial in China for shoplifting......regardless of the outcome.....in some countries they would have lost a hand.....bye bye basketball.........
