Many assert that the 7th day Sabbath of Gods eternal law is done away with. that it is no longer the chosen day Of God. They say that after Jesus died and rose again that the Sabbath was done away with. yet does not Jesus death do the exact opposite?
let us examine what the death of Jesus does to the Sabbath. but first let us understand the First blessing of the Sabbath.
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Gen 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Notice that it took 6 days to create the heavens and the Earth and on the seventh God Rested and blessed it and sanctified it.
Sanctified means to set aside for holy use. It is the only day of the week which God has blessed. this alone should be enough to silence those who argue against the Sabbath. but let us go on. by the way who created?
Answer: Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
clearly it was Jesus who created the earth and it was Jesus who made the Sabbath day.
lets take a look at the commandment concerning this:
Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
The Sabbath in the commandment was put in because it is a manorial of God being the creator. now let me ask you this. now that Jesus has died for our sins, is he no longer our creator?
Answer: Of course he is. He will always be our creator. therefore it would seem that this reason for the Sabbath would not be changed by the death of Christ.
notice also the title of the one who gives the Law:
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
who was it that led Israel out of bondage?
Answer:
1Co 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
1Co 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Jesus was the Lord God who led them out of Egypt. It was Jesus who sent Moses:
Joh 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Exo 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
So we know that Jesus himself sent Moses and was the one who led them out of Egypt. in the commandments he calls himself the Lord. notice the words of Jesus:
Mar 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath.
So the number one reason the keep the 7th day Sabbath is as a worship memorial that Christ created us, and being that this fact has not changed we can safely say that it was not done away with because of Jesus death.
second point of why the Sabbath is blessed twice. and in fact it is Jesus sacrifice that makes this second blessing.
lets examine the second time the Sabbath commandment is given in Deut:
Deu 5:12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
Deu 5:13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
Deu 5:14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
Deu 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
notice that the Sabbath commandment is the same. but the reason is different. the reason now is because the Lord/Jesus, brought them out of slavery to Egypt. Now before we go on I would like to point out that this is the reason given in the commandments for keeping the whole law. but let us focus on the Sabbath here.
Keep in mind this is still the 7th day.
let us learn a lesson from the Exodus. If you recall that God brought plagues on Egypt until they let the people out of slavery. the last plague that caused Pharaoh to let the people go. (the death of the first-born) but let us look at the passover that took place at this same time.
Exo 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Exo 12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Jesus was also taken by the Sanhedrin some days before the crucifixion. John 11:47-53
Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
This is the same day that Jesus was cricified. more on this soon.
Also the lamb was slain between the two evenings. Jesus was also at about the ninth hour. Mark 15:34-37 + John 19:30.
Exo 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.
none of Jesus bones were broken. John 19:33-36
There are more parallels but for time we will stop there. let me go back to the same day Christ was Crucified.
Joh 18:28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
Notice it was passover time.
Joh 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Joh 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
so notice that it was passover when Jesus was crucified. in fact the passover represented Jesus death on the cross to come. it took place on the 14 day of the month of abib.
1Co 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
and the next day was to be a Sabbath no matter what day it fell on. why?
Answer: because it was the 7th day Sabbath the next day after Jesus died.
Luk 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
Luk 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
Luk 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
notice here that the day was preparation day the the Sabbath was coming. so they stopped preparing the spices etc for Christ why?
Answer: "and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment."
It is clear that Jesus died on Friday night just before Sabbath and rested in the grave from his work of salvation on the Sabbath. that is why he said:
Joh 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
so we notice that the second reason to keep the 7th day Sabbath is because Jesus freed us from slavery to sin. just as he freed the Hebrews from slavery to Egypt.
Now let me ask you, does Jesus death take away this reason for keeping the Sabbath?
Answer: no way, it actually gives more reason to keep the Sabbath. it is a memorial to two facts that remain. Jesus made us and Jesus saved us.
It is a law given by Jesus himself to remember that Jesus both made us and saved us. this has not changed and never will. there is only one day that is blessed for this reason and that is the 7th day. by rejecting it you also reject Christ as creator and saviour. you reject his command to remember this very fact on the day that He made.
on the Friday Jesus said at creation: it is finished and it is good. on the Friday of his crucifixion he said it is finished and on both occasions he rested from his labours.
notice also that the Sabbath is about worship. while we can and should worship God every day. God himself gave the Sabbath as a special day of worship devoted to Him. notice also that the two reasons the Sabbath is given are the two reasons we worship Him. namely creation and redemption.
Rev 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Rev 4:9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
Rev 4:10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Reason one, he created all things.
Rev 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Rev 5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
Rev 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
Rev 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
Reason two, He has redeemed us.
blessings.
