US worried by ‘rising tide’ of European anti-Semitism

The White House voiced alarm Tuesday at a surge in anti-Semitism in Europe and in France, after last week’s attack in Paris on a kosher supermarket which killed four Jewish people.

“The violent assault on the Jewish community in France that took place on Friday afternoon was the latest in a series of very troubling incidents in Europe and around the world that reflect a rising tide of anti-Semitism,” White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said at an American Jewish committee event in a Washington synagogue.

But the market attack was just the latest to raise fears among European Jews. It followed killings at a Belgian Jewish Museum and a Jewish school in southwestern France in recent years. France particularly has seen numerous incidents of hate crimes, harassment of Jews and the common use of anti-Semitic slogans in anti-Israel demonstrations.

Well, maby it should be mentioned, that this attack in france was from radical moslems, which also killed 12 people from a satire magazin. It makes a different if terrorists are anti semitic ore if the normal volks in a country are antisemitic. Otherways you can draw a wrong picture if you say europe is becoming more antisemitic

The rise of anti-semitism is indeed very troubling. Even to the shame of America, one of the very few countries in all history that has not persecuted the Jews, it is on the rise here. Always watch when a country begins persecuting the seed of Abraham that the curse upon their nation will follow not soon thereafter. A very reoccuring theme in history.

Great. The White House is "worried" about rising antisemitism in Europe. When is it going to start worring aobut the "rising tide of socialism" in the U.S.?

Oh, wait ...

They endorse that. They foment that. They declare that the law of the land ...

... with a phone and a pen.

Never mind.

We should be very worried about the rise of both antisemitism and terrorists in general. People slept when Hitler rose and look what happened. I hope we can keep those who are trying to instill fear in the rest of us in control.

I am American; other countries need to step up to the plate and take an active role ($$, troops and whatever else) in combating the Islamist extremists.

The White House is pandering. After being routinely accused of not supporting Jews, they are fabricating proof that they care.

Next they will have Barbara Streisand accompany John Kerry to the Jewish community in Paris.

The attack on the supermarket is more of a result of 'the rising tide of anti-semitism' than a cause. The cause itself are the relatively recent events in Israel and Gaza. At least with the general population solidarity with the jews has grown because of the attacks.

You misunderstand. The German people never slept at all. They voted Hitler into power and by and large they loved him. Before World War 2, German kids were laying starving on the street, Germany was like a third world country and their war reparation commitments were forced upon them, and they were, in hindsight, grosly unfair for the common German person. Hitler refused to bow to the will of the US and the other European parties that bound Germany into debt after the First World War.

By and large, bank ownership, jewellery store ownership, good property and high-paid jobs were out of the normal German's reach, and most were owned by Jews or foreigners. It wasn't just Hitler who hated the Jews, lots of Germans did too. When Hitler defied the banks and created a national socialist state whose payment was given to the value of work, calculated on the costs of building or commercializing to a degree necessry for full employment, the Jews and bankers instigated boycots on German trade, sunk cruise ships, attacked cargo vessels bound for South America whose contents were traded without the use of currency, and refused service to many German nationals.

People think the Jews (and the countries Hitler invaded, and the US, and Britain) were entirely innocent in the run up to the Second World War, but they weren't at all. In fact, the Americans and British played a large role in instigating it in regards to policy against Germany and policy regarding Palestine and their support for those (mainly Jews) who controlled Germany's richest institutions and who benefacted the Americans and British most handsomly via war-reparations in currency terms. Before the war, before the attacks, and after Hitler's defiance against the banks, many of whom were US owned or Jewish owned or both, the US president at the time, Roosevelt, sent Hitler a threat-by-proxy in a letter, and this is a transcript of Hitler's speech in response to the letter:

''Men and women of the Reichstag, Mr. Roosevelt asks that assurances will be given him that the German forces will not attack, and above all not invade, the territory or possessions of the following independent nations; Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belguim, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Portugal (laughter grows in the crowd at this point as the list gets ridiculously long), Spain, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iraq, Arabia, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Iran!''

Hitler smiles and the crowds laughter erupts into mocking at Roosevelt's silliness, then continues:

''My answer is this; I have taken the trouble to ascertain from the states mentioned, firstly, whether they themselves feel threatened, and what is most important, secondly, whether this inquiry by the American President was addressed to us at their suggestion, or at least even with their consent. The reply was in all cases negative, sometimes strongly so. Thus, I have the following statement to make; The German government is, in spite of everything, prepared to give each of the states named an assurance, given on the condition that they themselves ask for such an assurance an assurance from Germany with absolute reciprocity together with correspondingly mutually acceptable proposals.''

''In the case of a number of states included in Mr. Roosevelt's list, this question can probably be regarded as settled from the very outset since we are already allied with them or at least united by close ties of friendship. As for the duration of these agreements, Germany is willing to make terms with each individual state in accordance with the wishes of that state. I should not want to let this opportunity pass without also, above all, giving to the President of the United states as assurance regarding those territories, which after all, would give him most cause for apprehension; namely the United States herself and the other nations of the American continent. And here, I solemnly do declare that all the assertions which have in any way been circulated concerning an intended German attack or invasion on or in American territory are frank frauds and gross untruths quite apart from the fact that such assertions, as far as military possibilities are concerned, could only be the product of the silliest imagination.''

The crowd erupts into clapping and cheering.

''Since England today, both in the press and officially, upholds the view that Germany should be opposed under all circumstances, and confirms this by the familiar policy of naval encirclement, the very fabric of the naval treaty has been violated and its basis has been removed. I have therefore resolved today to send a communication to this effect to the British government.''

The crowd absolutely explodes with cheering.

''This is, however, to us not a matter of practical material importance for I still hope that we shall be able to avoid an armaments race with England, and instead set these boundaries in a manner viewed as an action of simple self-respect. Should the British government, however, wish to enter into more negotiations with Germany on this problem, nobody would be happier than I at the prospect of still being able to come to a clear and straightforward understanding.''

''Moreover, I know my people, and I rely on them''.

Safe to say, Britain didn't to much to make peace after that. Nor the Americans. The bombings of Germans ships began, cruise liners were sunk, there were riots on the streets, Britain got involved in Palestine, the banks boycotted Germany, trade routs were attacked, Britain promised to force Germany into relinquishing its political powers in Poland, and eventually the war officially began when Hitler invaded Poland.

It's not as simple as 'Hitler was an evil man and he killed lost of people'. He refused to bow to the Treaty of Versailles demands as keeping up reparations meant he had to witness tens of thousands of German kids dying of starvation. Hitler's primary goal was the prosperity of Germany. Britain, America and France's goal was to keep getting handsome sums of money at the expense of what was a continuing holocaust against German civilians on par with that of the Jews.

The German people weren't blind at all, they were sick of being left to rot and die by most of Europe and the USA, so they voted in a man who wouldn't stand for it.

Wouldn't you?

@Human Heh here's an interesting little 20th Century history fact for you. Did you know that despite popular misconception Hitler was never elected leader of Germany? He did run for president of Germany (or whatever office was equivalent to that.) He lost to Hindenburg though. In fact Hitler was never elected to anything. Hitler gained political power by being appointed Chancellor, then after the Reichstag Fire managed to slowly consolidate power until the Night of Long Knives whence he purged the government of any opposition.

20th Century history is whack almost beyond imagination... almost.
