im so glad i put this post up, thank you soul
Our children's pastor and his wife wanted to adopt a child for a long time. They believed God gave them a specific name for a daughter for a specific reason.
When the agency called them to let them know they had matched them with a baby, they were SHOCKED to find out the baby they had for them... was a boy.
Now if they would have said, "No, no, we're waiting on the little girl God has promised us--He gave us a name and everything," they would have missed out on having a son. They adopted this little boy (he is their first child) and he is the light of their lives. This was about 5 years ago.
Do they believe they heard from God? Yes. But they think it might be a future reference (and yes, they are looking into adopting a second child.)
My point is, even though in this case they do believe they heard from God (not all instances are from God, in my experience--some are, but some are not), they did not put their lives completely on hold because of a specific name and gender, and they were open to other opportunities God had for them as well.
I hope you find a balance in doing the same.
