I think we can take a great deal of comfort from the story of Job and even the story of Ruth and Naomi.
Firstly, Job, who did nothing wrong, yet lost so much (and gained so much MORE). God was there all along. Sometimes, we go through things that seem so out of place with our Christian life that we feel as though God has left us. However, we must remember that His word says that we WILL have trials and tribulations in this world. We are in the midst of a battle that is not with things of this world, but with principalities and darkness. However, be encouraged, for, as Jesus Himself said, He has overcome the world. We must be refined and, though it is painful, we must be pruned, otherwise we will remain as we've always been. Every test and trial is a time of either refining or reeving. We either allow these times to refine us and have us draw nearer to Jesus and seek a deeper, sturdier relationship with Him or we allow the devil to take us apart and down. You will recall in Job that the devil wanted Job to curse God, as did Job's own wife, but God knew that Job's trust and relationship with Him was based on more than family, friends, and possessions and He knew that Job would not curse the One he loved.
Now, with Ruth and Naomi, imagine that season. She lost husband AND sons and was left with only her daughters-in-law, who were Moabites. Then, she decides to return home and the two young women press to go with her. She allows them for a time but then tells them to return to Moab and remarry. Orpah goes but Ruth stays. Naomi then gives Ruth the silent treatment to attempt to get her to return to Moab. Upon returning to her homeland, Bethlehem, Naomi changes her name to Mara, which means bitter. Long (and well-known) story short, Ruth marries Boaz and ends up in the lineage of Jesus. What does this mean for Naomi? She is no longer forsake and destitute. She would be cared for by Boaz and Ruth the remainder of her days, just as Ruth cared for Naomi before Boaz arrived by gleaning the leftovers in the fields, the areas God commanded left untouched for the widows and orphans to be cared for.
In our current places, we can't often see God's hand or His plan, but rest assured, He has a plan and you are not forgotten or forsaken. Jeremiah 29:11 says that He has plans for a future and a hope for you. Believe it. Cling to who Jesus Christ is and let your circumstances fall to the side. Pray for guidance and confirmation and godly friendships to come alongside you and help you through the storms.
As Christ has told me of late, "It's only a storm, Julie," Storms pass and they come to an end. We need to weather the storms and learn to praise Him in the midst of them.
May God come and give you the comfort that He desires to give you. May He show you His presence in the midst of the storms, reveal to you that sometimes He comes in the clouds, and give you the strength and ability to see this storm through to the sunny weather to follow, by power of Holy Spirit. In Jesus' precious name I ask this. Amen.
