Can I use a gif as an avatar?

I just tried using a gif as an avatar but it doesn't move........any tips?

Trial and error. Anything much bigger or smaller than the recommended size will kill the animation. But i've had some i thought would be safe sizes not work. I have tried plenty and have yet to find a common link to what allows some but not others, that are close in the size listed.
