Dealing with mental illness adds a whole different level to being a Christian. But not one that cannot be overcome. I have quite a few friends who are bipolar Christians, with a number of other comorbid conditions, such as GAD and OCD, etc.
They all have found that hanging onto Christ is a journey. That means sometimes it will be hard, other days easier, but always profitable. That means growing and learning.
Salvation is not just the day you got saved, and Jesus came into your life. That is the day you were justified, or made positionally right. After that, we spend the rest of our lives growing in truth, or being sanctified. That means facing challenges, coping with pre-existing conditions, (mental, physical, maritial, financial, etc!) No one is perfect in this life, and that means that each day we have to make the decision to love God and our neighbour as ourselves.
But there is great hope. I have one friend with severe anxiety. But she knows God is there, has forgiven and saved her, and she clings to God no matter how her emotions overwhelm her. My cousin has a son with Asperger's and life is just hard for him, (also severe anxiety and OCD). But he trusts in Jesus, regardless of how bad things are in his mind.
Since you are a new Christian, I would urge you to get a Bible which you understand, at your reading level, and dig into the New Testament and the Psalms. The psalms talk about the whole range of emotions and issues we face.
I hope you have not been told that once you come to Christ, your life will now be perfect. Instead, the truth is, we serve a perfect God, who loved us so much that he came to die for us on the cross, while we were yet sinners. The exciting part of being a Christian is the journey, pressing into Christ, and letting the Holy Spirit continue the work of transformation.
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2
"But God demonstrates his love for us in this, that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
