I was reading in Psalms one day and came across the very familiar Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” I have heard this sentence probably hundreds of times as it was used often in the church I went to as a child. As it happened, I was reading from the Complete Jewish Bible version which was taken from the original Hebrew and translated into English the way we normally talk, and it reads just a little differently than I was used to.

The CJB says it this way: “Create in me a clean heart, God; renew in me a resolute spirit.“ I’m content with “renew a right spirit within me” but I found it quite exciting to consider the wider implications involved with “renew a resolute spirit within me.” Looking up resolute, I found it even more descriptive than I thought! The dictionary says: admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.
"she was resolute and unswerving"
synonyms: determined, purposeful, resolved, adamant, single-minded, firm, unswerving, unwavering, steadfast, staunch, stalwart, unfaltering, unhesitating, persistent, indefatigable, tenacious, strong-willed, unshakable; stubborn, dogged, obstinate, obdurate, inflexible, intransigent, implacable, unyielding, unrelenting; spirited, brave, bold, courageous, plucky, indomitable; informal gutsy, gutty, spunky, feisty; formal pertinacious

We are certainly asking for anything but apathy when we pray using the word resolute!

Just imagine the impact Christians would have on their communities, states, and our country, if we all had a resolute spirit renewed within us! And one more thought: “renewed” indicates a prior state, as in once existing but needing renewal – CPR for our formerly resolute spirit…

Hi Shoshanah, I like the broader understanding that the word resolute brings :). I like the way it touches on the challenge that faces us to remain in the Lord and determined to finish the race, that we resolve, whatever happens, to continue....and to complete, whether wars within or without, trials, testings, sorrows, grief and troubles on all sides...we nevertheless know Whom we have believed and are persuaded that He is able to keep that which is committed unto Him against that day.

The resolute or right spirit is one that sees the heavenly perspective on all we face, and knows that ALL things work together for GOOD to them that love God, to them that are called according to His purpose.

I love that it is ALL not SOME :)

thank you for this wonderful teaching, it gives us such a broader and more intimate look
at what we can do if we put our hearts and minds and souls to understanding the
depths and riches of God....when He puts His Spirit within us, we soon learn that He
starts to expand our Spiritual knowledge so that we may put it to Holy use in our
new-walk as the new-man, for we are created in Christ Jesus for good works and
for being the good examples that He expects us to be.....

MATT 5:16.

and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

A worthy daily prayer. Confessing the need to be right with God every day. Easy on the lips but demanding a daily sacrifice of ones own desires from the heart.

Thank you so much for posting this.. I say this scripture often but you have dissected it and made it plain.. Most of the descriptions I possess through God.. Thank you for bringing new light and sharing it.

I am old school. I wish I could modernize what I have to attach it somehow to this thread, but in the 80's friends of ours did a tape of worship songs, and one was "Create in Me a Clean Heart, O Lord." (Because they did that, this is one of the few scriptures I have memorized. lol) The next line gives a different word that says the same thing: "And renew in me a steadfast spirit."

"Steadfast!" The word I wish I had more of, but yes, it does remind me that I had it before!

i appreciate that it is God who creates in me this heart, and renews in me this spirit - this resoluteness does not come from my own power, which fails, or my own will, which fades -
- so i call on the Lord to do the work in me, because i cannot.

that none should boast, except that He has shown them mercy :)
by His power, by His strength, at His will!
