This is a long read, and perhaps too deep for many to understand, but some who desire the “meat” over the “milk "may find it edifying.
In Genesis 14:18 we see the story of father Abram who came back from the slaughter of the kings, and he was met by the King Priest Melchizedek. This King Priest of Salem (or peace ) offered father Abram bread and wine, and in return father Abram gave him a tenth part of all. I believe this story holds a much deeper spiritual meaning, and is a sign the Lord gave to us in a natural way first in order to be a reflection of the much greater spiritual things to come between our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ, who is our King and High Priest of peace being the Prince of Peace.
In Hebrews 5:6 Paul reflects on this story how Jesus was the fulfillment of that sign given in that Kingly Priest, which the Lord spoke of in Psalms 110:4. Paul spoke little of this Melchisedek because he said to the reader, that these things were things which were hard to be uttered. And Paul also said that many of them would be unable to receive them, because the people were dull of hearing. This is what Paul referred to as the meat of the gospel, and how it was not for those who were still drinking the milk, like the babes in Christ.
Paul was showing us how Jesus was that Spiritual High Priest King to come that would abolish in His own flesh the enmity, even in our carnal perceptions of many of the natural fleshy motions, or carnal ordinances of the law of Moses. And just as the law was just a shadow of good things to come, but not the very image of those things, this also holds true in the tithe or tenth part given to the old Levitical priesthood.
But by the Holy Spirit Christ would also reveal to His servants by removing that vail of the flesh that covered our minds from seeing the much greater spiritual aspects of that same law. Many of those spiritual aspects are also prophecy that is to be fulfilled in us as well as well as those who came before us. Just as Jesus said he came not to abolish the law (spiritual law) or the prophets, but rather to fulfill.
Jesus would also gather unto himself his own spiritual priesthood that would be given to Him of the Father, and they would also minister to Him on this earth and also in his New Jerusalem to come. Remember the pattern of the earthly was just a shadow of the true heavenly, even many of the carnal ordinances were just types and shadows of the greater heavenly things. Again it is written in Hebrews 10:1 “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”
This sign given us in Abram and Melchizedek is a kind of role playing symbolizing both the Father and Son as was also symbolized to us later in Moses (in the place of God) and Aaron the High Priest (in the place Gods mouth) Exodus 4:16 The Lord confirms this type of role playing of sorts of His Son and also in his saints here Isaiah 8:18 “Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.”
As these signs are much like the similitudes we see in father Abram, and in the King Priest of Salem Melchezedec. Salem means perfect peace, just as Jesus is also known as the Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6). Also the name Abram means high father, just as our heavenly Father is a most High God.
The Lord would later change Abrams name to Abraham, meaning father of a great multitude. (Many nations) Just as God is a Father to a great multitude, or host in heaven.
First notice the offering the King Priest gave to father Abram, which is bread and wine. In Matthew 26:26-28 we see Jesus making this symbolic offering to the Father with his own Body or bread broken, and the offering of wine, or blood shed for the remission of sins. In Return the Father would give his King Priest a tenth part of all the spoils of war. But you might ask, what is the tenth part symbolizing?
