I am hoping the Preterists use this thread to explain their doctrine. I dismissed Preterism many years back as the Widow Twankey of Christian doctrines. Have I missed something?

Preterists, I try to keep an open mind. Please give a clear account of your apologetics.

Hundreds of books written by experts on the subject, all maybe 300 pages or more, and exhaustively researched. But rather than read some of them, you want the doctrine explained to you in a few dozen words written by lay amateurs on a scatterbrained forum? You are a hoot.

Come on. Show some respect. Most likely the preterists on this forum have read those books and can explain it in a shorter fashion. This way one does not need to read 'hundreds of books' written by experts.

For me I would not even bother reading one of these books, due to the fact that full-preterism denies a future resurrection, which causes them to go outside of Orthodox Christianity, makes wild claims about world continuing as is forever, with nothing to back it up. This alone is enough for me to reject it.

Not to mention, this whole system was basically made up (to be honest, so was futurism with the way it is today, but Irenaeus also held to it) to distract the people from protestant claims of the antichrist being the man with the big hat.

More Than Conquerors by Hendriksen
Fox's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe

So, if you really want a full grasp of what we believe and truly plan to be "open-minded," (which I doubt, based on the title of this), have at it and get back to me when you're done.

I don't read books, except the Bible and histories, sorry WT.

History is usually embellished, but I will read segments of well-written history books.

I am a bit of an oik at heart.

You "come on."
A. The title clearly shows how much respect will be handed here.
B. If it could be explained in shorter form, it wouldn't require books.
C. And you are perfect proof that making a stand and judging without knowledge doesn't work.

Why do I truly believe that?

Ok - here it is - Jesus appeared, went, came back on the clouds of heaven in the days of vengeance in the 1st century AD to fulfill all that was written:

Luke 21:20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near.

Luke 21:22 because these are days of vengeance, so that ALL things which are written will be fulfilled.

Jesus said "all things"
, he did not say except this, or except that "which are written" - he said ALL - preterists believe his plain words.

Who are you to judge me? Go away woman.
The guy who says "put up or shutter up" now decides being judged doesn't work for him.

Case closed. Next?

Ok I checked what it is about.

Partial preterism seems plausible to me. Full preterism not.

All three points, totally accurate. And I am not even a Preterist.

OK. Thanks Muzungu.
I was not wrong. Preterism truly believes, as I have always understood, that Jesus' Second Coming was in AD 70.

That's it.

In black and white from Don Preston.

These guys are crackpots, Widow Twankey is being far far too kind.

Whilst HornetGuy, Lady Uranium, and ButtusPlugus expend their energies attacking me, some of us are genuinely interested in understanding Scripture.

I see indeed no respect is given. Atleast you are honest about what you are in your signature.
Everything can be explained in a short form, as Locutus already did bring up a simple point. I can explain amillennialism within 5 minutes, or in one post, or I can tell someone to "just read books about it". The books go in detail, but the overall idea can be communicated very quickly. Anyone can google books on a subject, buy them and read them.

If I decide to read a book, it is usually because someone has already explained to me something about the topic, which then causes me to look up a book about it, to learn the subject in-depth.

Would you be willing to go back through the Bible and list each of the places an expression, "coming on the clouds" (or words stating the same idea) are found, and tell us what kind of action by God was being spoken of in all those incidents?

(Hint: It was never "The second coming.")

Preterism is not a salvation matter. As such it is not a critical factor in soteriology. Preterism does war with orthodoxy relative to the dispensational teachings and of course they fear the teaching of the rapture.

For the cause of Christ

Partial presterism like that the Great tribulation happened in the 1st century etc. OK.

But full preterism like that the ressurection already happened, that there is already the new heavens and new earth etc.. this is really against any Christian creed I know of.

Rumor has it, I'm only kinda, but I really don't think the most important thing about the Bible is future-telling. Nor the second, nor the 20th or 1000th. I think it's right under "were there really unicorns?" on the list of importance.
