A type is somebody, or something that happened, in the Old Testament (OT) that points to Christ. An example is Passover when GOD through Moses delivered his people from bondage in Egypt to slavery. This event foreshadowed Christ's deliverance of his people from bondage in the world to sin. Moses was a type of Christ, and Passover was a type of redemption. Paul makes this connection between the type of Passover and the anti-type of Christ:

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 1 Corinthians 5:7

Types/anti-types conform to the hermeneutic principleof 'first the natural, then the spiritual':

But the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. 1 Corinthians 15:46

If you know of other types in the OT that foreshadow Christ, let us know about them.

Here's a type in the persons of the patriarchs' firstborn sons.

The firstborn sons of Adam (Cain), Abraham (Ishmael), Isaac (Esau), Jacob (Reuben), and Joseph (Mannasseh, i.e., Ephraim placed before Mannasseh) were all rejected from receiving the inheritance of GOD's promises. This is quite unusual and remarkable considering the fact that, according to man's tradition, the firstborn son always received the inheritance. Why would God have repeated this remarkable pattern so consistently through such notably godly men and the fathers of the kingdom of Israel if it wasn't to convey something extremely important? The overriding importance of this message becomes even more evident due to its ubiquity in scripture:

  • all firstborn males in Egypt at the Passover were rejected (if not protected by a lamb's blood)
  • the first generation that escaped from Egypt was rejected
  • the first king of Israel was rejected
  • all firstborn males in Israel were rejected (unless redeemed with a firstborn male sacrifice)

All of these prophetic types point to the reality of the death and resurrection of God's firstborn son; who in the flesh was rejected from inheriting the blessings, but in the spirit was raised out of the dead to inherit them.

It also seems that God has taken pains through these types to explicitly tell us that the natural seed, per se, are not the heirs of the promises. Ishmael, Esau, and Reuben were all firstborn, natural seeds, but they did not receive the inheritance of the promises.

Instead, those whom God chose became the heirs (Isaac, Jacob, Ephraim). God alone always chooses whom the firstborn seed will be, irrespective of man's will or tradition. A spiritual inheritance (the promises) can never be inherited through a natural birth, but only by God's choice (the spiritual birth). All those of faith are the seed of Abraham through the one who inherited the promises, died, and now lives forever to bestow the blessings of the promises on his seed.

And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29

Noahs Ark.

People are perishing all around Noah but because Noah is inside the Ark he is safe from death.

People are perishing all around us but because we are in Christ we are given Life.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Abraham (almost)sacrificing Isaac is loaded with types.
'God will provide Himself a sacrifice'
Three days journey to the site (in Abrahams mind Isaac was as good as dead/Christ 3 days in the tomb)
'Abraham's only son'
Isaac laid on a wood altar/ Christ on a cross
Isaac did not fight against his father/Christ not against His.
Isaac as the promised seed is restored to life /Christ's resurrection
...whew, it's endless

Moses, himself, was a type of Christ...

Deu 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Cain is not in Adams Genealogy, that is why he can't be considered Adams son, even . Adam and Eve's line starts with Seth . Cain should not even be mentioned in Adam's line .

Cain was Adam's firstborn...

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. Genesis 4:1

It's also a repeated theme throughout the bible. And it does start with Cain and Abel, one was faithful, one was not.

As with Abraham, Isaac was the promised son, yet Ishmael still was a son of Abraham.

Galatians 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
Galatians 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

That is still the case in the world today, as it has been since the beginning.

Galatians 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Galatians 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
Galatians 4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

The same picture throughout the bible, from the very beginning.

Isaac had two sons, Jacob and Esau,

Jacob was named "Israel" by the Lord.

Jacob/Israel had twelve sons.

And Joseph went into bondage in Israel. God set's them free from that bondage.

Just like today...

And even though God brought the people out of (Egypt/bondage/sin) still there were commandments given.

Genesis 16:1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Exodus 13:3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

Exodus 16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

Exodus 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Numbers 19:1-10 "Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
2 “This is the statute of the law which the Lord has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel that they bring you an unblemished red heifer in which is no defect and on which a yoke has never been placed.
3 You shall give it to Eleazar the priest, and it shall be brought outside the camp and be slaughtered in his presence.
4 Next Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and sprinkle some of its blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.
5 Then the heifer shall be burned in his sight; its hide and its flesh and its blood, with its refuse, shall be burned.
6 The priest shall take cedar wood and hyssop and scarlet material and cast it into the midst of the burning heifer.
7 The priest shall then wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward come into the camp, but the priest shall be unclean until evening.
8 The one who burns it shall also wash his clothes in water and bathe his body in water, and shall be unclean until evening.
9 Now a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and deposit them outside the camp in a clean place, and the congregation of the sons of Israel shall keep it as water to remove impurity; it is purification from sin.
10 The one who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; and it shall be a perpetual statute to the sons of Israel and to the alien who sojourns among them."

Yeshua is the red heifer without blemish, who when sacrificed was placed outside the camp (death), yet in a clean place (His Father's Will).
Israel will go and bathe/drink of that sacrifice and will be purified.

you have to be careful with typology...i know of some bad doctrines that are backed by imaginary types and shadows...

for example the roman catholics teach that the ark of the covenant was a type of the virgin mary...

my personal inclination is to only accept types and shadows that are specifically identified as such in the new testament...it may limit the number of types as shadows that i can acknowledge...but at least it prevents eisegesis...

I agree with being careful. I think deviation from the anti-type being anything other than Christ leads into error.

The nation of Israel is also an anti-type to Jesus Christ, For God called the nation of Israel out of Egypt (by the hand of Moses, who also was a type of Christ), and Hosea 11:1, When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. Also as the Nation of Israel could not obey God during the 40 years of wilderness, Jesus Christ could obey God during His 40 day fast in the wilderness.
