Its a good thing you mentioned Paul because he said not every one will speak in tongues.

Thegift of tounges is when one speaks in languages when the spirit gives the utterence of the gift. When you get filled and baptised you speak in tounges of angels, as Paul said. Its evidence. When you recieve the Holy Ghost you speak in tounges as evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost. That tounge is not a gift. A lack of knowledge will have a man perish. Who will kick against the Prick?

Your talking about the gift of tongues, that is a separate thing than praying tongues which the evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The gift of tongues is for public use and normally is interpreted and is equal to prophecy. Praying in the Spirit is praying in tongues and praying the will of the father as it is the Spirit praying through you. I would much rather have the Spirit pray for me than just myself.

After I had replied on this thread my experience with my praying in tongues,
I was watching a Christian program and the topic of tongues came up. I had
was interested in it because we had been discussing it they brought out the fact
the gift of tongues for prophecy and the Prayer language in tongues as two
separate things. It was timely and well worth being brought up on their program.

I was posting at same time you were and I think we are on same wave
length, are we not ? I had an experience this past winter where I felt
led to pray for someone and I started out in my language and next thing
I knew, I was praying in a new language. And as you know it was not
revealed to me what I was praying. That is okay. I think often times
people are reluctant because they do not understand totally what it is
all about. At one time I would have shunned such things as tongues.
But as I matured in the Lord, I understood what it was about. However,
If I were in a Church that something just did not seem right, ( and I was)
I tested the spirit and felt I had to leave. As you know it had nothing
to do with my PERSONAL prayer language. God bless you.~

Yes there are two tongues spoke of, the tongues of the angels and the tongues as in worldly languages. Either way though they are not to be done openly unless a translator is around. Reason being as scripture says we are to edify others, and if you speak in tongues and some one does not understand you, you only edify yourself.

and whats wrong with edifying yourself. David encouraged himself in the Lord and then went and took his stuff back praise God.

Because Jesus said to edify and esteem others more than our self.

Do you think that Jesus was asking for strength for others when He was sweating blood and asking the father to let this cup pass from me?

He was asking for mercy for others...the exact reason for His agony at all.

This was esteeming others, He put others before Himself. This was Jesus showing that He felt the same way as we do since He took on flesh, and was asking God if there was another way that salvation and the forgiveness of sins could be achieved let it be done. He knew that He was the only way to achieve this and thus He accepted and went through for others, not for His self.

Do you think that Jesus was asking for strength for others when He was sweating blood and asking the father to let this cup pass from me?

The scriptures give instruction on this. If you are going to edify yourself, you should be alone, not in front of a group of people. Paul says that if someone comes in a sees you speaking in tongues (that is not understood) then they will think that you are crazy (paraphrase). I can look it up if you like.

My pastor wants everyone in church to speak in tongues. We are Baptist but believe in the gifts and practice them. Does speaking in an unknown tongue gives the evidence that we are spirit filed and saved believers? I have friends who are believers in Jesus and they do not practice this. They lead a spirit filled life and are wonderful people of the faith. What does it mean for the whole church to be toungers in the spirit? Who will this edify and how do we interpret this if everyone is babbling? I for one want to be able to know what is being said. He said that he was in Croatia and spoke in tongue, and the people understood him because he was speaking in their native tongue about the Lord. I love the Lord with all my heart and soul, and I have just only talked to him in my native tongue English in which he knows. In speaking in tongue does that make me a super saint and put me on a higher level than other believers? I think after 20 years, I should be at another level in this spiritual journey. I am trying not to use the word Christian...because my pastor says that is the wrong terminology.. We are saved believers. This sets us apart from others who say and use the term Christian..yet they really are not and to remember Christian is not a denomination. Our mandate is to get them to the church..Lead them to Christ...Form community.... Put them to work within the church and pray for church growth and tongue talkers!!!. Is tongues still needed?...or is it just a preference for those who want it?
Just asking.
Speaking in tongues refers to that which is spoken in one particular language and understood by many at and all at the same time. If what you hear is gibberish, it is not spoken in tongues per se. There are many churches that have as many rules, or
requirements as yours, whether they handle snakes or howl at the moon. Stick to what Christ said. Period.

Yes, speaking in tongues is the sign of receiving the Holy Spirit. If you don't have Holy Spirit you don't belong to Christ. You can't be saved without it.
You cannot therefore blather, what you say must be clear to everyone within earshot. Tongues meant that everyone would hear and understand what was said, even though the language may not be their own.

And this what Christ said

Mark 16

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Here's another Scripture too many people do not like.
1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

There are eight manifestations of tongues recorded in the Bible, And the only one that is a gift, Is found in 1 Cor 12: 1`0, The chapter about the gifts of the Spirit.
This [Only] gift of tongues needs an interpretation.

Foreign languages and tongues of Angels are two more of the eight manifestations, [Operations] of tongues.

Please read I Corinthians 14. Paul said of the one who speaks in tongues 'no man understandeth him' and spent much of the chapter explaining that tongues needed to be interpreted if they were to edify the church.

Paul said, "Thou I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love..." He didn't say that everyone spoke in the tongues of angels.

When you recieve the Holy Ghost You Speak in tounges. Everybody who recieves the Holy Ghost speaks in tounges. But thats not the gift of tounges. Read what you said, the tounges of men, confounded languages which is the gift of tounges, and the tounge of Angels, when one recieves the Holy Ghost.
