When were our sins paid for? Was it at the cross or the moment we believed?

Were all sins paid for ,or only our past sins ?

Sin is transgression of the law ,did Jesus take away the law at the cross ?

Did God pour out his wrath due to us ,on Jesus ?

Did we recieve Christ's righteousness when we believed

Which verses support these questions?.
Hello Throughfaith, the questions that you have presented are really meaningful and well thought especially for understanding salvation. Here is my response to your questions based on scripture.

1. When were our sins paid for? Was it at the cross or the moment we believed?

The book of Hebrews 10:12 says that the Jesus made one sacrifice once and for all for our sins. Therefore our sins were paid at the cross.

However, in terms of Romans 10:9 we receive forgiveness of our sins the moment we believe and not only must we believe, but also confess that Jesus is Lord in order to receive forgiveness.

For example, it is like someone giving you a cheque for 5 million dollars to pay off your debt (so technically you are debt-free and a multi-millionaire), but are only declared debt-free and a multi-millionaire when you accept the cheque and cash it in.

So Jesus paid the price of sin for all mankind at the cross, but it only those who accept Jesus who will receive the declaration that their sins are paid for.
Therefore if an atheist does not believe in Jesus, then his sins will not be forgiven, although Jesus has already paid for his sin.
John 3:18 says “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

2. Were all sins paid for, or only our past sins?

The bible says Jesus has paid for all our sins. Unfortunately it does not tell us what it means by “all”. The bible also does not specify whether it is past and/or future sins that are paid for.
Therefore we need to look at other bible verses in the bible to determine if all or only past sins are forgiven.

Ideally after we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we should not continue to sin because we become new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). However, we are tempted by the devil (1 Peter 5:8, 1 Thessalonians 3:5) continuously and do commit sin. So are these sins that we commit after we are saved also forgiven?

2.1. .Jesus Christ, our High Priest

In order to answer this question, we have to look at what Jesus is doing right now. The bible says that after Jesus ascended to heaven became our High Priest who is making intercession for us. Now what is the role of a High Priest? His role is to receive the confessed sins of the people and atone for them. Jesus right now receives confessed sins and atones for them and we find grace and mercy because Jesus was also tempted like us and emphasizes with our weaknesses (Hebrew 4:14-16). If all our sins were forgiven (both past and future), then it would not be necessary for Jesus to be our High Priest to atone for our present and future sins.

2.2. Bible asking us to confess our sins

1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 2:1 says “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”

These two bible verses were written to believers and requests them to ask for forgiveness for their sins. If our future sins are already forgiven, then it would not be necessary to make this request. If our future sins are forgiven, then it will also not be necessary for Jesus to be our Advocate and to continuously intercede for our sins.

The bible does not specify whether past and/or future sins, but if you look at 1 John 1:9, and John 2:1 then it is reasonable to conclude that the future sins are not forgiven and therefore our past sins are only forgiven because we are still expected to confess present and future sins. If this was not the case then we will not need Jesus to be our High Priest right now.

Also Jesus taught how we should prayer and gave us the Lord’s Prayer and one of the requests is to ask God to forgive our trespasses (sins) as we forgive those who sin against us. (Luke 11:4, Matthew 6:12). Jesus knew beforehand that he was going to die for sins, but why would he give us the Lord’s pray and state that we must ask God to forgive our sins if both past and future sins will be forgiven after he died on the cross.

Therefore taking the above into consideration it is reasonable to conclude that only past sins are forgiven. And we must ask for forgiveness for our sins that we commit after we are saved.

Were all sins paid for ,or only our past sins ?

Sin is transgression of the law ,did Jesus take away the law at the cross ?

Did God pour out his wrath due to us ,on Jesus ?

Did we recieve Christ's righteousness when we believed

Which verses support these questions?.
3. Sin is transgression of the law, did Jesus take away the law at the cross?

Jesus did not take away the law.

Matthew 5:17-20 - "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

4. Did God pour out his wrath due to us, on Jesus

The answer is yes in terms of Romans 5:9

Romans 5:9 - "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."

However, if a person does not believe in Jesus, then God’s wrath will remain on him.

John 3:36 - "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Did we recieve Christ's righteousness when we believed

Which verses support these questions?.
5. Did we receive Christ's righteousness when we believed?

In terms of the two bible verses below, the answer is yes.

Romans 3:22- "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference"

Romans 10:10 - "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

5.1. Losing our righteousness/salvation

We can receive righteousness in terms of the two verses above, but can also lose Christ’s righteousness and salvation. May you please refer to the bible verses below.

5.1.1. Can lose righteousness when you stop believing e.g. if a Christian decides to be an atheist

Hebrews 6:4-6 - "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame."

Hebrews 3:12 - "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God."

2 Peter 2:20-21 - "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them."

5.1.2. If we do not abide in Christ and show the fruits of the Spirit, then we will be cast away

John 15:4-6 - "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned."

5.1.3. Bible warns about falling away and that we need to endure to the end

Hebrews 3:13-14 - "But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end"

Colossians 1:23 - "If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister"

Matthew 10:22 - "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved."

1 Corinthians 10:12 - "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

1 Corinthians 9:27 - "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

Hebrews 10:35-39 - "Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul."
