Joh 11:17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

In the above verse, It was said that Lazarus was in the tomb (or dead) for four days when Jesus arrived.

My question is where was lazarus soul or spirit during the four days?

was he aware where he was?

and if he was in heaven, is it fair to bring him back on earth to suffer more?

Matter of fact I was just reading this last night. Jesus answered that he was asleep, and then when they didn't understand him he said plainly, "he's dead". I looked up that chapter because I was interested in discovering the reason "Jesus wept". I think it may have been that no one understood or trusted what he said as it seemed in this particular chapter anyway,as they reasoned he must be crying because he loved Lazarus,( they probably didn't get him) because everyone misunderstood everything He told them,

Just like the Christ when he died on the cross, Lazarus' body was in the tomb (grave) and his spirit returned to God. No, Lazarus was not aware of anything at all. He was totally dead. He had no thoughts at all.

Jesus and the thief on the cross went to Paradise after they died, as did the other Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. The rich man in Luke 16 went to torment. King Saul brought up Samuel's spirit from beyond the grave. But according to all of my studies, every person brought back was righteous, and no one brought back had gone to torment- as far as my studies thus far. So have there been ghosts? Well, Samuel was one, and I suppose Moses and Elijah in Matthew 17. Have there been mummies? Well I suppose Lazarus was one. But unlike in scary movies, they were all righteous souls- not evil. And it no longer happens today. (that's a whole other topic as to why)

He was asleep in the grave. Think about it. If he was in heaven with eternal life, why would Jesus take that away and bring him back here to die again?

The key to understanding this event is that it is a physical picture of how a spiritual rebirth happens. In that sense, it is a parable. Ephesians 2:5 says,"Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)" . This is a description of being born again. Jesus, in explaining the Lazarus event, goes into a nice explanation of the born again or rebirth experience to explain it all. Notice his use of the same phrase 'were dead': Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live)(John 11:25). Jesus goes on to say that whoever lives and believes in me will never die. This should be understood to mean when someone is born again, they believe in Jesus. That means they were once dead in sins spiritually, but God gives them a brand new spirit. They have not died physically when this occurs, it is simply going from death to life in the person's spirit. Jesus goes on to say that such a person will never die. That means that even when the person's body dies its natural death, that person continues to live in Christ. God gives a nice picture of this in the physical resurrection of Lazarus to graphically illustrate in a visual way what happens spiritually during the born again situation.
