Hey ya'll,

I could use your help on a research project I am doing for one of my college classes. I would appreciate if some of you would take the time to answer this question for me, and if you want to expand on it and explain why you feel one predictor is more important than another, feel free. Though my instructor has not asked for it, I have already planned on addressing the spiritual component as a predictor.

I think whether or not parents use alcohol and how much would be a factor as well.

Lets see...growing up my parents were very anti-alchol as far as underage consumption was concerned. The only times I did drink would be at a friends house whose parents were less strict. Never really got drunk as a kid until my high school graduation. The parents allowing this required us to give them our car keys when we arrived and arranged for all of us to be able to get home safely by staying up the night and driving us home in our own vehicles while the spouse followed to take the driver back. My parents werent really too mad because of the safety practiced in the situation. After I turned 21 I was allowed to drink at my parents house. Nothing bad ever happened. As a sidenote my parents would consume beer on saturdays. Normally two a piece and that was it. Nowadays with being over 21 spending time together tends to involve more alcohol but I think that may be the stereotypical southern way.

Teens attitude toward using alcohol would, in my view, have everything to do with whether they will use it.

Availability of alcohol I put in 2nd place because usually if you have a lot of availability, it's because you are hanging out with people who drink all the time, or who will buy it for you. I wasn't thinking really of kids whose parents have a bottle of rum in the cabinet so much as about their general environment (parties, drinking friends).

I can't really rate, I can just give my history. Most of the friends I had did drink. I never did, I could have had as much as I wanted but never touched the stuff.

Glancing at this at first i immediately went to teens, not younger. Now i understand why. The first and last options are 'teen', but the original question is aimed more at an elementary/pre-teen age group. This may affect the responses as my answers for a teen would be different than 5th-8th grade.

I know it's a really tiny detail but I would change "parents' expectations" to "parental expectations." Just a suggestion. Peace.

I speak as a parent who raised my children in an alcohol free CHRISTIAN home. Today, both my kids are avid party going alcohol drinking socialites, as all of their school and church friends. I honestly do not know any single teen in my church or community who does not enjoy and have to have alcohol at every single function or event. It is expected and endorsed by society and all of their similar minded friends. Don't get me started on the idea that they also need to have something to look forward to on their wedding night! lol

These are my answers for middle school aged children. My answers would definitely change for high school aged kids.

I can't rate for young kids now, but I do know in my own life, once I had my first drink, I did not drink for any of the above reasons, but because of the internal pain and conflict in my life.

As for my kids, we never drank ever! There was no alcohol in the house. However, my kids played hockey and many of the parents were alcoholic and often appeared at games and after drunk.

However, when one of mine started drinking, we much later found out he was drinking to cover up the pain of something in his life we did not learn about till much later.

So I would say that pain, abuse, molestation are probably the strong underlying motivator for kids drinking, especially to excess. Which kind of ties into AoK comment about families that don't have two parents in the home. A lot of pain and being disturbed when the parents split, or maybe not knowing who your father is, or having a parent in jail.
