Well then!

Naturally, as someone who's studied jazz, I am well acquainted with the repertoire of Maynard Ferguson. Probably his most famous cover was that of Richard Harris MacArthur Park. Of course, Ferguson's cover isn't the most famous cover of Mac Park...no, that would Donna Summer, of course.

Here's the shorter version. The eighteen minute cut is really where it's at.

Tonight's the first time I've listened to it (a version with sung lyrics, rather than the Ferguson instrumental version) in a couple years. I'm not sure if it's now ironic that this is my favorite disco chart, or just now slightly sad. Hmm.

I find it slightly amusing, Jules, that you've such a taste for Donna Summer. While she is unquestionably talented, one can't help but think of the joke that is commonly used to describe her vocal embellishments. ^_^

Back to the disco! Since Maynard Ferguson was basically king-daddy of the jazz scene in the 70s, he knew how to keep his arrangements 'contemporary' enough to be playable on pop radio as well as the jazz stations. This had little to do with his ludicrious altissimo virtuosity,* and more to do with him using disco-style rhythm section grooves and disco strings in many of his arrangements. While Bill Conti's original theme for Rocky, Gonna Fly Now, was plenty disco-y, Ferguson's cover took the disco style to a new level. In fact, Ferguson's cover of Gonna Fly Now got MORE airplay on the radio than Conti's original when Rocky was still in the theatres!

That oughtta do it until I can think of something else.

*(While one might decry it as excessive showboating, one cannot deny that he took altissimo trumpet performance to a new level and was truly a master of that particular aspect. He was also a pretty stout trombonist as well.)

Technically I am not derailing because Star Wars came out in 1977 & this is Disco Vader! :p
Tore, I am disappoint. You bring up Star Wars in a disco thread, and that's the best you can do? Come on, man.

MacArthur Park is one of my favorites :) My mom played Donna all the time. She loved to dance and so do I. Brings back fun memories :)

I had forgotten about the Star Wars one! :)

I wasn't born until 1983, so i don't know anything about the 70's, However my mom was a dancer in the 70's and those were her "glory" days, so when i was a kid she would take me in the kitchen and teach me how to do the hustle and something she called the bump.
On friday nights we would walk to the video store and she would rent her favorite movies from the 70's and we would stay up and watch them.
We listened to a lot of Donna Summer, Looking glass, and Jimmy buffett

Those are the best memories i have of my mom. :)

Looking (and listening) to all of these videos, knowing I grew up listening to them...it must be the reason that I have a phobia about dancing. I was scarred as a young child, and will not ever dance. I will never place a toe upon a dance floor.

I now know it was the disco.

Unfortunately I have no knowledge about disco. :p So I didn't think of anything 70's. But, I DID think of this:

There's actually an extended version of this video. But it seems to be non-existent!!
