Nowhere in the Bible will you find any texts regarding Purgatory. The Roman Catholic Church teaches this because they believe that the soul or spirit leaves the body when it dies and then floats around until Jesus comes again. It is all a myth and a false teaching. All those who seek the Truth, pray to God, and not the pope, and search your Bible for the answer.

Well, I believe what is written. What we can read there, that there is a gulf in heaven. On one side, are those that are with God, and the other are those that are not with God.

So there is a holding place. And it takes a study into the Bible and the Greek and Hebrew to be sure.

It should not be about this church or that church. But what is Written ... Don't allow personal opinions and people, get in the way, of what is actually written.

You are right frank. There is no scriptural proof. Without purgatory the whole Roman Catholic belief system falls. The clergy has to keep this false doctrine going in order for the house of cards not to fall. Remember the RC church does not have to have scriptural proof. The church is infallible. It's crazy they put mans traditions over the bible.

Few people recognize the fact that there is a holding place. The Bible states that no one who enters heaven will leave, and no one who enters hell will leave. How will it be, then, that the already dead will be caught up with the living at the time of the rapture if they aren't able to leave heaven.
Purgatory is the believed "limbo" where people go to await "promotion" into heaven through various means such as people praying them into heaven from here on earth. The concept of purgatory, therefore, negates the existence of hell and promotes the idea that everyone goes to heaven. The distance one is from Purgatory upon death is said to be based on one's good works while on earth. This idea of Purgatory, of course, is contradictory to scriptures and, therefore, is false.

Hell is not in existence yet, the lake of fire, at the end.

Where does it state in the Bible that no one that enters hell will ever leave? Haven't seen the one about heaven either. "You can enter but you can never leave..." lol.

Think I'm gonna like you Frank. :D

well i know that with Lazarus and the rich man, God's judgement was final, and Hell is eternal, as scary as it may seem, maybe the fear of hell will lead us to overcome sin, after all,..

[h=3]The Narrow Way[/h]13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broadis the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because[a] narrow is the gate and difficult isthe way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Since the Bible, when speaking of heaven, states that those who are with God in heaven are there for eternity, and those that will be in Hell will suffer there for eternity, there isn't much doubt that "be there forever" means one can't leave.

Well I was only teasing in the other post. But as for the "suffering" in hell for a never ending period of time, I don't believe scriptures actually teach that. But this isn't a thread for that discussion. There are many threads that tackle that issue. I'm a believer in the annialation of the wicked after the judgement. I believe they go into the hellfire prepared for the devil and his angels and are consumed in that fire that will destroy everything at the end, preparing the way for the new earth. Kind of like a field burnoff before the planting season? The wheat separated from the tares and the tares thrown into the fire? Like that.

To begin with y'all need to know what Purgatory actually is, as opposed to what you assume it is.

III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.
1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.[SUP]606[/SUP] The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:[SUP]607[/SUP]
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.[SUP]608[/SUP]
1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."[SUP]609[/SUP] From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.[SUP]610[/SUP] The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:
Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.[SUP]611[/SUP]

The Scripture quoted in the quote is 2 Maccabees 42-46.

Purgatory is not a get out of Hell free card, as once you are in Hell you are there forever. What Purgatory is is a place of cleansing for the elect to purge them of any lingering attachment to sin before they are admitted to Paradise.

It is a heinous doctrine that denies the sufficiency of the blood of Christ. It is salvation by works and denies Gods grace. Christ did not need to die if men can be expiated through suffering in purgatory. That is why it is flatly rejected.

It is if you ain't Protestant.
I can suggest many other reasons but the only one needed is that the teachings in Maccabees conflicts with other scriptures. God did not write anything that conflicts with something else He wrote.

There's a belief that purgatory is some kind of holding area, to keep and cleanse one of their sins during the time from when they die to when eternity takes over again. But right there is the fallacy, the idea that we must wait for eternity to take over again.

We need to understand how time and eternity interact. Most people think time is linear - there’s eternity at one end, then a time line, then eternity at the other end. But that’s wrong. What we need to picture is a wheel. A wheel has a hub and a rim. Imagine God and eternity existing in the hub, and time running along the rim. With this reference in mind we can see how, like randomly inserted spokes, God can reach out and touch any point in time, at any point in time. It also shows how it is that when we die, no matter what random year in time it is, we go directly to the eternal, there is no 'waiting' period and therefore no holding pen. We may leave this world at different times, but we all arrive there at the same time. No waiting.

Now, as for a place and period where some are set apart for cleansing by fire, that is true, and rather than get long winded here I'll refer you to http://christianchat.com/blogs/rickyz/249-5-how-will-we-judged.html for the discussion. It's not the purgatory of Catholic lore, but similar.
