Just wondering how we can grow in the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Is it a matter of reading the bible more or do we ask for it?

My friend the only and I mean only to grow in the fruit of the Spirit is this. Place your faith solely in the work of the cross and nothing that you can do. Then, the Holy Spirit can legally produce in you His fruit. Look at this way, The cross is the only place that God can meet with man and it is the only place that man can meet with God. There is no other way. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life. Nothing else. Not prayer shawls, not a Daniel fast, not wearing a beanie, nor blowing a trumpet, so on and so on.

love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. . .I think the more we renew our minds to the word of God, the more we put on the new man created in righteousness. . .the more we will manifest the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Yes, but in practical terms, what does it mean to meet God "at the cross"?

I think we also have to read and pray and ask. Having faith is one thing, but we are to test our faith and grow in it by study and prayer. Faith won't stand on its own without reinforcement. We do not belong to a blind faith religion. This is why there are such verses as study to show yourself approved, seek and you shall find, etc. To grow in our faith and to produce fruit, we are to advance our faith through guidance of the Holy Spirit through study and prayer, witnessing, fellowship, etc.

Here is a good question for all believers. How do you live for God? From most, you will get a blank stare. Then, most will say by reading the bible. Atheist read the bible. Well I fast. But, then boast about fasting. What is the only thing that God receives all the glory? answer the cross. Thats how we grow in the Spirit.

First by accepting His work at the cross. He is the lamb. Jesus is our only mediator between us and the Father. David said I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart. I will enter His courts with praise. Nothing that we have done. Thanks to the cross, we can pray to the Father in Jesus name and have our petitions known. There is two things we can do, 1 accept the cross, 2 seek Him in prayer for our every need, decision, and act.

I know many will also add obeying the word of God, But you cannot obey without the help of the Spirit and without the cross, the Spirit can not help you. Look even our faith comes from God, for Jesus said unto every man is given a measure of faith.

So to grow in the fruit of the Spirit is to place our faith in the work of the cross and rely on Him for everything else.

Take a look at what God did at the cross, here are some verses and see what this means to you and is from God to you.
[h=3]Colossians 1:22[/h]New Life Version (NLV)

[SUP]22 [/SUP]But Christ has brought you back to God by His death on the cross. In this way, Christ can bring you to God, holy and pure and without blame.
Romans 1:17
The Good News tells us we are made right with God by faith in Him. Then, by faith we live that new life through Him. The Holy Writings say, “A man right with God lives by faith.”
Romans 6:4 (This Baptism after the resurrected Christ is Holy Ghost Baptism with fire, the fire is to kill one self flesh and be alive to God by the resurrected Christ through one's belief)We were buried in baptism as Christ was buried in death. As Christ was raised from the dead by the great power of God, so we will have new life also.
Romans 6:5 If we have become one with Christ in His death, we will be one with Him in being raised from the dead to new life.
Romans 6:11 You must do the same thing! Think of yourselves as dead to the power of sin. But now you have new life because of Jesus Christ our Lord. You are living this new life for God.
Romans 7:10 The Law was supposed to give me new life. Instead, it gave me death.
Romans 12:2 Do not act like the sinful people of the world. Let God change your life. First of all, let Him give you a new mind. Then you will know what God wants you to do. And the things you do will be good and pleasing and perfect.
1 Corinthians 1:30 God Himself made the way so you can have new life through Christ Jesus. God gave us Christ to be our wisdom. Christ made us right with God and set us apart for God and made us holy. Christ bought us with His blood and made us free from our sins.

Praying this helps in you seeing what God himself has (past tense) done for you and is done in you the first day of belief in God
By Christ for you.

Belief in God and seeing the finished work of the cross, where by we are freed form stress and count all things as a joy, whether it looks good or bad, for by Faith we know God has got us through the cross smothered and covered

Kerry, I love you say you fast!! It is something you do physically that leads to your spiritual growth!

I think we all need to do that, I wish our organized church wasn't so opposed to any of it, but feel we need to only worship God through the Holy Spirit and not express it in what we do day to day. I think "doing" is a great help in growth. They say that what we do is legalism, and it certainly can be. But on the other hand, all their "you shall not" is growth inhibitors.

I did a very simple thing only to express how I felt about how I used my house. I put up a box with the words in it that I loved the Lord. I used the same words God said to use when God suggested this in Dueteronomy. My church found out and I thought we would have a batch of kittens right there! Or I'd be kicked out. Such a fuss. I asked God, checked His word. I kept my box. I am now convinced that everything we do to worship if it is from listening to God is beneficial to us.

People pray, study, and serve as much as they love God. Where a person loves for God ends, there spiritual life ends.

He who has been forgiven much, loves much.

If you want to grow in the fruit of the Spirit, spend more time in prayer asking God for opportunities to do just that.

Very Good Homeward you are right on track as usual. But, I must warn, for I have discovered this myself. I became so focused on dying to self, that gradually, my faith became focused on this act. we must be constantly reminded that are faith is to be placed in the cross and nothing we do. Self righteousness is a slippery, cunning, sly, deceitful enemy. Thats why Paul would say that the preaching of the cross is the power of God.Many say why keep preaching the cross. First of all is there anything else. Secondly, we must be put in constant reminder of this fact. The enemy is slick.

Fasting is a good thing and something that all believers should do. But, not for victory. Look, Daniel fasted not for victory but, for answers. Fasting is a away to keep the flesh under control, as I said denying self. what I am trying to say as best I can. Is that fasting is a result and not a means. Hope I made since.

Fruit of the Spirit. . .that which is produced by the Spirit within us. The more word we have in our minds, the more we walk by the Spirit - the more fruit we will produce. If you have fruit trees, they will produce more fruit if they are fertilized. We fertilize our minds with the word of God, apply that word to our lives, and the result will be more fruit.

Homward, from a long time of us being together, you know your posts always absolutely bewilder me. They are always so filled with growth in the spirit, and they are always right on. They also always talk about not being confident in the flesh. I think you mean the flesh as being you as a person who eats and drinks and sleeps, rather than the you who desires to live without God. Please, would you explain?

You know a lot of my mission is to have the person, the human that God created, learn of the spirit as more important, to die of the flesh, but to bring that human in submission to God's ways through having it perform worship duties. I agree the first step is all you say, but I don't see how you can do all you say without taking the second step of having the person who lives in a fleshly body do to express what you tell of. How can this be?

have faith and believe that god died for your sins and you will receive the fruits of the spirits, you cannot learn to do them it must be given to you but you do grow more in it when you receive it

Reading the bible is a very good start. True, we need the watering of the word. However, as I said, even atheist read the word. I'm not trying to start a debate. I'm just stating a fact that reading the word alone is not sufficient. I would have to say, where is my faith?

I planted some mustard seeds a few years ago, because I wanted to see how they grow.

When Jesus explained the parable of the sower, He said this:

Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. When we read the word, and hear the word, a seed is planted.

I know that when I planted those mustard seeds the ground had to be prepared, rocks and other debris had to be removed and the soil had to be broken up. (plowed).

Natural seeds need water, so do spiritual seeds.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Natural seeds need light, so do spiritual seeds.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Natural seeds sometimes need fertilizer. So do spiritual seeds.

Luke 13:6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
Luke 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
Luke 13:8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
Luke 13:9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

1 Corinthians 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Thank you Kerry, iron sharpens iron, so let us both continue to listen, with the two ears God gave us. I think this was so we could listen to God twice as much as we speak. Taking into account all things, and listening to what the Spirit says and do as, just like Christ did, God getting all the glory, if not then something wrong. Time for the red flag and listen for the Holy Spirit to separate error from truth, so we stay free from the traps of this world
Thanks again for this reminder
