To those like me, that are fairly new in their walk, this whole bible version issue is so confusing. How do I know which one is the best to use
That largely depends on two things
1. What is your reading level?
2. Are you new to Christianity?

I was raised in a Lutheran church, but as a kid I never understood about the whole faith walk....As an adult I was baptized in march of 2010..so I guess you could say I am "babe" in Christ. As far as my reading level....how would one judge that? I have a NkJV,NIV ,Amplified and ESV ....I am just unsure as to which one is the right choice for me....I understand the NIV better, but I also can read my NKJV pretty easily.

NKJV is the bible I used to study, but I use all many of the different versions including KJV, I've come to really like the NASB, Holman Christian standard Bible and the Expanded Bible.

Then for a beginner, I would recommend the NIV. Personally, I do not like that version for a number of reasons that are not important right now but, it is a version that is easy to read and comprehend. I do like the NKJV and use it myself quite often. Stay away from any paraphrased versions. They are completely unreliable.

Ma'am, I recommend getting a King James Bible. And then ask God to help you, lead you and to give you understanding of His holy word. Also, if you want to know what are some good Publishing Companies out there, then you can Inbox me.

It is a very vital issue. The Bible Version Issue is an issue over Final Authority. And it is an issue that every Christian should look into and take time to research.

This time we are living in with all the ridiculous bible perversions that are out there is just incredible. It is said that there are well over 230+ English translations on the market today. And each one has their own copyright. And of course that means that the text of each of these modern translations has to have enough changes in it to be considered an original work. Talk about confusion!!

Here is a video ma'am, that may be of help to you.

Okay Huckleberry, what translation of the bible do you recommend, apart from the unreadable KJV???
What I find really amazing is that people will buy various electronic gadgets, like a smart
phone. That can txt msg, take pictures, record video, surf the web, download music, give
directions, play games, have utilities schedule events or reminders, and make a
phone call,...and learn how to use it all. But that KJV Bible, that just over my head.
Come on people......that "hard to read" excuse just don't hold water these days.

Every attempt to "correct" it has gotten it wrong.
ACTUALLY, the NIV has a verse that is far more accurate than any other translation.

1 Timothy 2:12 should be translated as, "I do not permit a wife to teach or to assume authority over her husband; she must be quiet.

King James got that wrong.

The New World Translation that the JW's use is more correct that the NKJV.
As far as the whole "easier-to-read" reasoning for using other translations, I will say this:
One ought to raise his intellect to that of the Bible, rather than lowering that of the Bible's to his.
What you really mean is one should raise his intellect to that of King James, who was gay.

How do I know which one is the best to use
Use one in a language you can understand. It is the Holy Spirit that leads us into all truth.

John 14:17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

The one that is best to use is the one that is the most honest and accurate, i.e., the King James.
II Timothy 2:15 of the KJV instructs us to "study" God's Word.
The only way you can know anything is to educate yourself.
There's been a lot written on the subject from both sides.
I'm going to repeat this saying again for a third time:
One ought to raise his intellect to that of the Bible, rather than lowering that of the Bible's to his.

I exhort you to read the page I've linked to.
And I'll say this again:
One ought to raise his intellect to that of the Bible, rather than lowering that of the Bible's to his.
oh let it rest already. The point is that as long as all parts of the Bible are represented the Lord can use the translation. The KJV actually ADDED certain things to the original language. The NIV took out. It's God's word and He will use it regardless of man's faulty translation.

Savedandhopeful, I would recommend that you use the NIV for your primary study Bible. However, when a passage confuses you or seems unclear, go to several different versions -- KJV, NASB, ESV, NKJV -- and see what they have. I have found that by reading a difficult passage in several versions and by praying about it, I feel I get a real sense of what God is saying.

Thank you, all have given very good advice. I do find my NIV easiest for me at this point, I am learning more each day and pray about what I am learning. I would like to have various versions in my library someday.

Looks like I touched a pretty big nerve here.
No where in my original post are the words "final" or "perfect" used.
I don't know if the KJV is either. Here's what I do know after 18 years of studying this:
The KJV is the most honest and accurate English translation of the Holy Scriptures.
Every attempt to "correct" it has gotten it wrong.
The New World Translation that the JW's use is more correct that the NKJV.

As far as the whole "easier-to-read" reasoning for using other translations, I will say this:
One ought to raise his intellect to that of the Bible, rather than lowering that of the Bible's to his.
The NKJV is so close to the NASB in its translation that I don't use them side by side in parallel mode in my software. For regular reading, it's more comfortable than the NASB. As a pastor, I recommend it.

As far as your comments here, you obviously are like all the other KJV only's on here: arrogant, & ill informed.

I grew up with a KJV. Read that KJV when I was a teen. Years later I started to really study the Bible after I found an NKJV that had belonged to a preacher in training. It had a huge concordance. What a blessing from God!! But I got paranoid and threw it away. Then I studied the same KJV I grew up with until it was fallen apart. Got myself my first NIV. WOW!! So easy to read!!!!! So grateful, gave it to somebody and now I have a Billy Graham recommended NLT. LOVE...it.

I doubt the Chinese have their Bibles translated in KJV.
All new Chinese converts read the KJV, ChosebyHim said so himself. ;)

The falsfication of evidence, lies, and fraud of the KJV-ONLY movement in combination with it's ungodliness, idolatry, and rebellion against God causes me to disregard it as an unfortunate happening of cult history.
