I believe there are one or two former atheists in this forum. Ask them if they ever thought they'd return to God. Ask them how anti-Christian they were and whether they ever argued abrasively with believers. The thing is Megaman, I don't think you and I are in a position to accurately judge who will return to the light, and who will turn to the dark side. :)

I'm attempting to shift this discussion into life lessons on how individuals should treat and view authority. If that's too much or against your wishes, I can stop.

So then, let's talk about something else then Cycel. How about the origin of the universe? Do you think it's more logical to believe the universe has a cretor, or that the universe does not have a creator? And why?
 
In one post Cathy asked why isn´t God making the foot of an amputee grow back and in another post she asked why is God allowing bad things to happen? I thaught a lot about these questions and I remembered that one friend of mine (who is atheist) said that he hated God for having allowed Satan to do bad things to Job. He said to me that God was a "&%$ because He wanted to proove Satan that He is more powerful. I didn´t know what to answer to my atheist friend, but now I understood. I believe that the story of Job shows the close relation that exists between God and His creation. I believe that God had faith in Job and that Job, at his turn, had faith in God. I believe that when Job praised God (despite his troubles), God looked at him with a lot of love and simpathy and said to Himself "Yes, it is good indeed what I´ve created". I believe God was happy for the fact that Job defied the desasters in his life by enjoying even more life.

I've heard of a number of cases from missionaries to other countries where amputees grow back a hand or a leg during prayer.

"Why doesn't God heal amputees" is a question that is asked often by those who don't believe. It has been answered, but it seems they don't like those answers so they dismiss it.
 
I certainly am not rebelling against any Christian authority. There isn't one in my eyes. I don't hate a 'Christian Authority' either.

I don't know why this keeps coming up? Do you hate the Muslim Authority? No! Cos there isn't one in your eyes.

Did you actually watch this video, or are you assuming its contents? It doesn't contain a miracle of any sort. Here's a video for you, though.

Your friend was not an atheist in the sense that we call ourselves atheists -- to hate God, one has to believe in God. It's like believing in dragons... I probably wouldn't care for a real dragon, but I don't hold any hatred for them because it would be silly to hate a non-existent creature. Although I have to agree with your friend that the Job story paints God as a villain. You're looking at it through rose-tinted glasses... would you be willing to part with those 2 cute children in your picture to have them replaced with 4 later on? No??? I wouldn't, either.

The question is more like "why isn't miraculous healing obvious, rather than hiding in the guise of unexplained healings or internal fixes that can't be accurately observed". It's a double-standard if we granted that healing was real, but if we believe that God heals no one then it makes perfect sense to never witness an obvious miracle.

You watched a guy with an amputee leg that was dancing, singing, laughing and enjoying life and you failed to see the miracle?! Starcrash, fly a litlle bit with your heart!

When God healed me of an infection, it was obvious to me.

There are a number of miracles attributed to St. Francis Xavier. During his work in India he had immense trouble mastering the languages which he relates in his published letters and his biographer laments that the miracles that once buoyed the apostles no longer occurred. Yet, among the public stories of miracles abounded. One told how he would walk into a village, speak, and the people would automatically understand him. This is well documented, so you will forgive me if I remain skeptic in regard the regrowing of missing limbs.

Up till I was twenty-five I still believed in ghosts. One thing I recall was my willingness to accept as evidence any ghost story, said to be genuine so you comment above rang a bell.

I've never heard of anyone growing missing limbs. I also believe that there are no longer "miracles" like many claim. Many things ceased after the first century(which will lead to other arguments that I dont want to get into), and the big purpose for those miracles were so others would believe. When the books of the bible were completed and distributed throughout the world then that is when certain wonders began to die off.... so in a way I am a skeptic with you when it comes to miracles.

But you interpreted it as healing from God. If you were a Muslim, you'd probably attribute it to Allah. If you were part of the New Age Movement, you would probably believe in a more generic spiritual healing through chi. The reason that we're not convinced is because you can't link cause and effect without this personal interpretation.

This is what I'm talking about, believing in miraculous healing when the process is murky and difficult to see (like an infection being fought by cells inside of your body). Where does this ever manifest in the observable world? If it could happen, scientists would descend on it like piranhas and try desperately to replicate it... why bother with expensive, unreliable medicine with side effects if we could unlock such perfect medicine? Yet scientists are not trying to figure out faith healing because there's nothing real there to study.
