Thank you. So Christ did not give a "new" commandment; the greatest commandment is an "old" commandment from the law of Moses.
So then God's laws ARE *distinct* from the covenants, right...because otherwise how can one be under the NEW covenant but still obey a law - unaltered - that originated under the OLD covenant; the very act many have been arguing is a work in "self-righteousness", saying "obeying a law from Moses automatically places oneself under the OLD covenant...even if one believes in Christ's grace in the NEW covenant"?
You've made a very good point. It is a mischaracterization, though, to say that I teach that obedience to a commandment in the old covenant places one under the old covenant. I teach that faith and love are obedience to that old commandment, which Christ and the apostles also witnessed; and that attempting to be obedient to that same old commandment via works of law (the letter) is disobedience. You might say 'well I'm keeping the law because of my faith', or 'I keep the law in faith', but those are meaningless exercises in futility because faith itself brings one into a righteous state before GOD.
