I used to love the silence. Now it closes in on me. it tightens its grip, its echo through the recesses of one's mind. it mocks and leers. it moves around and circles in. the silence brings chaos... insanity.... the shattered remains of a time long ago. the silence is not from Him...
"Be still and know". psalm
It can be painful, but, only to the ego. If you can't bear it, don't do it . Go through it and overcome the ego. The ego wants to run from the silence, where God is. The religious soul has no deep understanding.
Here is what a beautiful young girl had to say.

The truth
I don't know about you, but I was born, and raised a Christian. Yet, I could never find that peace God promised to give me.
But I could never find it. I'm young, so I searched and searched for peace. Tempted, by the world, I succumbed. And I fell.
I thought I knew God. I thought God loved me, He sent His son for me. So why would God let me fall? That was a question
I asked God, over and over again. I was desperate for an answer. And slowly, I started doubting my religion. And then it
hit me. That was my problem. I was in a religion. Works, efforts, that was Christianity to me. But not once did God mention
in the Bible that He came to bring forth a new religion. No. He came, so that we may have new life. We're already breathing. But inside, we're all dead. I was dead. And the reason I fell, was so God could pick me up. I never knew God was there for me, until I acknowledged Him. Until I acknowledged the fact that I was dead, worthless, and could never amount to any good no matter how much I try. I was a sinner, not a saint. And no matter how much I tried to keep the law, I would just fall flat back on my face. Back to that disgusting ground. The Law wasn't meant to be kept. It was meant to be broken, because it's main objective, was to make us come to the realization that we are all sinners. And only the perfect, and just can keep the Law. And that's what Christ did. Christ did, what we could never do; He kept the Law. He walked, for three years for us, and He took our sins, at His baptism. Yes. You read me right. (I'll tell you all about why I said He took our sins at His baptism, if you'd like) And He gave His life up for us, and when He did, it was all over. Sin? I know you no more. Yes, from the day we are born till the day we die, we will never stop sinning. But what God wants us to know, is that our sins, He remembers no more. Sin isn't the thing that separates us from God. Unbelief is. Not unbelief as is a Christian, or a Muslim. Unbelief can be directed to a Christian as well. And it's unbelief in His baptism, death and resurrection, and what actually took place there. Just knowing about it won't suffice. Believing does. You can call yourself a Christian. But, that doesn't mean you're getting saved. And that's a fact that we all need to know. I was just like that. Ignorant/ I only believed in what I wanted to believe. But sometimes, what we want, isn't what we need. I may be all over the place right now. But I just hope that you got my point. God bless.
