The Truth About The Sabbath

These various terms give us a key to understanding verse 5. Paul is talking about "the anxious internal debates of conscience"1 that lead to differences in areas of personal preference. He is advising the Roman Christians not to let their views on such things divide them.

He starts with the example of diet. Some of his readers are vegetarians, others are not. The two groups should not be critical of each other. They all serve the same Master. "Who are you," Paul asks, "to judge the servant of another?" This is the immediate context of the verse we are considering.
 
  • Some versions of the Bible read "esteems" or "judge." The same Greek word is used on both sides of the comparison that is contained in this verse. Paul uses this word in verse 3, where the NASB translates it with judge:
  • Let not him who eats regard with contempt him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats, for God has accepted him.



  • Some people assume that verse 5 is talking about the Sabbath and come up with something like this: "One man observes the Sabbath once a week (on the seventh day, of course) while another man observes every day as the Sabbath." But as the verse continues it becomes clear that Paul is not talking about the Sabbath.

Amen brother! so you know where i got this message from? thank God you caught the message too, may God bless you my brother, you know one thing i can be thankful for God for.. is for bring me this trial that i've been struggling with over the pass week it has brought me so close to God that it made me had a revival with Christ and i feel the Joy in him again and i was able to straighten back up my life after trusting in him, praise be to God for that
 
In the KJV of the bible, the word Sabbath is used 137 times. In bible language, that word is used either as a name of a certain day, a day we name Saturday by the way, or sometimes as a feast day that scripture has designated as a day of rest from our labor. There isn't one scripture that says that the word Sabbath means any day of the week, except when Paul says not to judge someone by the day he choses to rest. That is the closest.

It is not right to add your own thoughts to scripture and call them God thoughts. When you say that scripture tells you to rest in the Lord, that is not God telling you to work on what scripture calls the Sabbath. You are adding something to scripture that is not there. You are to rest in the Lord. You are to keep the Sabbath. Both. If you rest in the Lord you would keep the Sabbath.

No scripture says that the new birth is our Sabbath.

Here are just two of many scriptures telling us what scripture says about the Sabbath:

Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Gen 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Luk_23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

It is wonderful to know these things, and to explore what scripture says about resting in Him. Trusting Him. Praising Him. But those wonderful things shouldn't be mixed up with the wonders of the Sabbath and what it can mean for us. That would be like saying God gave us one kind of food, so that means to get rid of all the other wonders God has for us. Or that we must mix the foods up.

think about it from a spiritual point of view my sister... do you honestly believe that keeping a day will give us complete rest for our souls? Jesus said [h=3]Matthew 11:28-30[/h]King James Version (KJV)

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.


do you honestlly believe with your heart... that this rest he is talking about is just a day rest.. you do know that our souls know they are destined to destructions, if Jesus said he is the Rest and he will give us that rest why won't you go to God for that resting? instead of relying on your understands of things instead of letting God give you the rest

By the way as long as you are in the sinful flesh your Sabbath of REST is but a shadow of things to come. Shouldn't have to show you that scripture also.

Paul is giving these two examples of what we eat and the keeping of days (any days - festivals or sabbaths, etc.). These are minor, secondary matters that have nothing to do with our salvation and basic faith. It is about not passing judgment on each other's doctrinal considerations as Christians.

As Christians we do need to practice the truth in regards to idol worship, fornication, rapaciousness, reviling, other gross sins, division and denial of the incarnation of Christ. We must learn not to pass judgments on the doctrinal views of others. (Paraphrased RcV.)

And note, that it is addressed to those stronger in the faith to be more patient with those weaker in the faith.

All before the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. "You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace." Gal. 5.

Amen sister and yet I come in here often to see people doing just that. Why oh why do we see the same arguments over and over again. So much judging and bullying each other. Do things out of love not anger and bitterness. You may believe you are doing it out of love but the language used does not suggest this. I am not judging you. God convicts question is do you feel that conviction? Sounds like people love either the Sabbath or Sunday rather than people not sure what God feels about that? Remember the whole Law is summed up in loving God and loving others and more how can you say you love God who you can't see when you hate your brother who you can... Just a thought.

I am sure I will be told off for this because each will say they are telling each other "the truth" in love. If that is the case then I commend you. Question is Are you? Just a thought.

It's not a matter of one type of "rest" vs. another "rest". Both have merit and are applicable to us today.

Our Salvation through Yeshua's life, death and resurrection provide an eternal rest from our fleshly nature.
A physical keeping of the Sabbath day gives us physical and spiritual rest during the week.

The 2 aren't in opposition to each other unless you try to make them be in opposition.

Also, just because there isn't a command in the NT to keep the Sabbath doesn't mean we're not to do it. From the beginning of time, God spoke to His people and laid out wisdom, truth and life for ALL of His people. The same God that wrote and inspired all of the OT is the same Jesus and Holy Spirit that wrote the NT. The same God, the same message. Jesus clarified many things that needed clarification. He took truths to a deeper level where they needed to be. If He didn't expand on it in the NT, then it didn't need to be expanded on. So, God told His people to keep the Sabbath forever. Jesus saw no reason to discount that command or to change it.

Again, the physical keeping of a Sabbath day doesn't come in conflict with the rest Jesus provides. I've kept a physical Sabbath every week for the last 8 years. It certainly doesn't discount what my Savior did for me.

If you read the context before Mark 2:27 from v. 23, it is very clear that the Lord is making the point to be practical in our Christian living. And further, Romans 14 is clear about not making 'laws' about minor doctrines like religiously 'going to church' and/or being under condemnation for not doing so.

the spiritual rest of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the only Rest we need, when we receive that rest indeed we are at rest in christ Jesus because our souls know that at first it was going into destruction but when it receives christ it is overwhelmed with Joy and happiness and relief that is the only Rest anyone should strive for, and if we do enter the rest of Christ why would anyone go back to a shadow of it ? now notice i'm not judging anyone i'm just saying

I think the bickering is all part of Satan's ploy to divide the Body of Christ and even more so today, to make Christians look bad to outsiders. I think we all need to be more mindful of the spiritual warfare going on around us and just be one in Him.

I have hope: "I will build My church." Matt. 16:18.:)
