Publix changes its coupon policy

LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) - Starting this month, Publix Supermarkets is changing their coupon policy that sets limits on how many coupons one household can use.

The changes will not affect the average customer, but extreme couponers who love their savings will see a difference. Some of the important differences include: Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one per day; limit of 8 of the same coupon per day; and no mobile coupons will be accepted.

A spokesperson for the Lakeland-based grocery chain said the move was implemented to provide store associates and customers clarity on what's accepted and to help all customers have access to products.

NBC 26 sister station, WFLA News Channel 8 caught up with Polk County's best known Extreme Couponer Missy Eby to get her take on the changes. Eby was featured on TLC's show Extreme Couponing.

Here are the store's revised policies:

- Publix will only accept a manufacturer's coupon and either a Publix or a competitor's coupon on the same item. Maximum of two coupons per item.

- Publix will not accept coupons presented via a mobile phone or device.

- Publix will limit coupon redemption to eight of the same coupons per day, per household.

- Money due back to the customer at the end of a transaction involving coupons will only be provided on a Publix gift card.

- For a buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) offer, each item is considered a separate purchase.

- Manager's approval is needed for individual coupons above $5.

- Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one Publix and one competitor's coupon per day, per household. The total order before coupons must be equal to or greater than the combined purchase requirements indicated on the coupon(s) presented. We consider competitor's coupons for dollars off groups of items to be a dollars-off-total-order coupon and will only allow one per day, per household.

- All coupons must be originals, not copied.

- Publix will not accept coupons that are printed incorrectly. For example, a coupon missing a size requirement or other standard coupon details.

- Publix will not accept percent-off-items or percent-off-total-order coupons.

- Manufacturer's digital offers cannot be combined with manufacturer's paper coupons on the purchase of the same item.

- Coupons are only accepted for the identical item sold at Publix, subject to any restrictions on the coupon.

A spokesperson for the grocery chain said the move was implemented to provide store associates and customers clarity on what's accepted and to help all customers have access to products.

“Be assured that whenever we make improvements, we incorporate customer feedback and research into our decisions. We look forward to continuing to help our customers find great deals and save money while shopping at Publix,” Media and Communications Manager Nicole Krauss said.

Extreme couponers ruin it for the rest of us. They use a kajillion coupons every time, take FOREVER at the checkout, and practically clean out all the store!!! I use coupons, maybe 3 or 4 maximum, but not to the extent these people do! These people go to the store and buy stuff that they already have like, 10 of each at home. They do it just to get everything free. They should go on the show "extreme hoarders"! LOL!! Better yet, the stores should limit everyone to using a specified number of coupons per grocery visit.

I didn't see Miss Elby's response. I'm curious as to what she has to say.

I disagree with this part. Don't limit how many coupons, as many people do need them to be able to buy just a week's worth of grocery's. (And I'm not talking about the extremem couponer's.) But maybe instead limit how many coupons can be used on an item.

Preaching to the choir. Of course they "donate" it all. lol. Probably to the people who couldn't find it at the store. :p

Publix is such a great store, I am glad they change their policies, because that type of thing, takes advantage of them.

^---You'd think with those 8+ bottles of what looks to be Pepto, she wouldn't need all that toilet paper.

Some are throwing a fit because they can "only" use 8 coupons per item...You'd think eight would be enough. :p
There also seemed to be a lot of confusion about the redemption of 8 like coupons rule. This does not mean that you can only use 8 coupons per transaction…it means that you can only use 8 identical coupons per day. You can use as many coupons as you like in your transaction but you can only use sets of 8 identical coupons. As an example, while you can use 200 coupons – you can only use a max of 8 Yakisoba coupons from the July SS insert. This is a great change as it will hopefully mean that more product stays on the shelf so more folks can take advantage of the sales.

I wonder if these couponers realize that there ARE expiration dates on things such as lotion, shampoo, dish detergent, etc. By the time they get around to using the 10th bottle of whatever, the rest will have gone bad cuz the ingredients get icky. LOL!! :)

Florida Walmat is cutting down too.
[h=1]Walmart stops matching Florida competitors' buy-one-get-one offers[/h]http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/tourism/walmart-to-end-bogo-matching-policy-in-florida/2200575

Starting Monday, the discount retailer will no longer match buy-one-get-one free offers at competitors' grocery stores in Florida, including Publix, its top rival.
Instead, Walmart wants shoppers to use its price matching program called Savings Catcher, which rolled out nationwide in August.
"Matching BOGO offers at Walmart's everyday low price has been a test that has only been executed in Florida stores,'' said Walmart spokeswoman Molly Blakeman. "With the introduction of Savings Catcher we have decided to end this test and align the policy in Florida with Walmart's company policy.''
With Savings Catcher, customers enter their receipt number through Walmart's website or smartphone app, and Walmart automatically compares prices at nearby grocery stores. Any lower price difference is loaded onto a Walmart gift card for future purchases.
