If this doesn't make you feel anything, you're dead. At least in my opinion.

Meh, too generic sounding to be anywhere near inspiring for me. I love hymns set to piano and minimal instrumentation, if not solely voice. It just sounds awkward in contemporary fashion.

Guess I'm not dead. It did something for me. Made me cringe. I'm with sign. Generic and uninspiring. I only point it out since your statement that because you like it others must be lacking. If it weren't for that I wouldn't have commented.

Sorry about the back to back double post, on #138 & 139. Not sure how it happened. Will be more careful after this because of the insufficient 5 min. editing rule.

Nothing wrong with that, brother. I'm sorry if my comment seemed like I was being critical of others. I shouldn't be taken too seriously when I say things like that. More to be taken jokingly, actually. Although I do like the song. I'm never one to say my taste in music, or anything, is better than someone else. At least not in a serious manner -- Again, I'm sorry if it seemed that way.

I didn't have time earlier to ask you this; but could you shoot me some suggestions when you've got time to some of this stuff? Sounds like my kind of music.

I'd love to! First of all you absolutely need to hear Washington Phillips. It's lo-fi gospel recorded in 1920 from an unknown zither-type instrument. Here's a link to his Key to the Kingdom album from 2005.

And here's a sample:

I'd also strongly recommend anything by Elizabeth Cotten (hymns and religious stories with accompanied guitar) and Johnny Desmond's Divine Hymns album. I'll post a YouTube video for each in just a minute since we should keep it to one for each post.

Wow. I'm blown away by that in every way possible. I have always loved blues from the 20's-40's. Always loved the passion felt in the music. Guys like Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie Johnson, Dock Boggs, Son House, and so own. I remember hearing Elizabeth Cotten back in my days of listening to those blues acts, and loving her music then. I specifically remember When I'm Gone by Cotten.

Thanks man for the names! Great video above. And certainly love Cotten, and will be digging back into her music. And will also check Desmond's music out!

Yeah bruddah, I love sharing so honestly the pleasure's all mine. Great artists you mentioned too by the way, glad to know I'm not the only 20 year old on here who's into this old-timey stuff.

Absolutely not the only one. Old timey music will ALWAYS be my favorite music. Hank Williams has always been my favorite musician. I don't listen to much secular music any more, but pre-50's music will ALWAYS be my absolute favorite. I've met people online around my age that enjoyed this stuff, but it always gets you some funny looks outside of the internet.

The vocals may be a bit hard to digust.. but..

not at all, I'm a fan of Blind Johnson, his voice is raw and honest. It's why I enjoy his music so much, there is no veil to hide behind, it's just him, his lyrics, his heart, and that beautiful voice. Reminds me of the verse that describes the stones praising the Lord if no one else will. There are some people who, even if you dislike their voice and talents, will refuse to ever stop singing and praising God. Blind Johnson was one of those people.

IMHO:

There seems to be widely differing opinions on this subject. Aside from the lyrics the music is an issue, but not addressed by the Bible. Thus personal taste is involved (beauty is in the ear of the hearer, like beauty in the eye of the beholder).

Apparently many do not agree with me, as it seems that some continue to sing worn out hymns from the old fogey hymnal, though I enjoy the best of the old hymns.

And many seem to like what I call recitatif songs, songs that have flat melody, not going much up or down (boring to me). It seems to me that many such songs have been & are being churned out, songs that have very good words of praise, but just no beauty to the tune, being little more than a chant. Yet some must like these, as song leaders seem to be picking them for the praise service.

I like some of the classical oratorios (Messiah, Elijah, etc.). But my favorite is contemporary Christian music when the tune is beautiful, the words praise the Lord, the words fit the meter (not crammed over the tune), and the words rhyme.

My pet peeve is excessive loudness, that is, electronically amplified loudness to the point of damaging ears physically -- also drums that are too loud. I carry ear plugs with me to church singing events just in case they are needed.

Don't worry brother Atwood, the time is coming and already is where we will worship the Lord with Gungor in worship service.

You are not blessed by "boring" or "old fogey" gospel songs? Maybe the problem is you have been listening to Gospel Music in the WRONG LANGUAGE? Try this one:
