A passenger was tossed off a plane at La Guardia Airport on Tuesday after flipping out — because airline workers wished him a Merry Christmas.

The man was waiting to board American Airlines Flight 1140 to Dallas when a cheerful gate agent began welcoming everyone with the Yuletide greeting while checking boarding passes.

The grumpy passenger, who appeared to be traveling alone, barked at the woman, “You shouldn’t say that because not everyone celebrates Christmas.”

The agent replied, "Well, what should I say then?"

"Don't say, 'Merry Christmas!'" the man shouted before brushing past her.

Once on the plane, he was warmly greeted by a flight attendant who also wished him a “merry Christmas.” That was the last straw.

"Don't say, 'Merry Christmas!'" the man raged before lecturing the attendants and the pilot about their faux pas

He was eventually led off the plane to a round of applause from passengers.

I'm just glad it was the man who was thrown off the plane, and not the attendants who were fired!

Would not be surprised if it was someone who had spent the previous hour posting on this forum about how evil Christmas is and how we should not celebrate it.

That is just as sad as the man flipping out over the staff's 'Merry Christmas.' :(

In the grand scheme of things, you're right, it is sad, but many people are growing tired of irrational attacks against pleasantries of peace and good will, and the round of applause is a reaction to such tiredness.

He wasn't thrown off because of Merry Christmas, he was thrown off because of his demeanor.

OOPS! I thought at first they were applauding FOR him, but instead, they were applauding BECAUSE he was led off the plane? I originally heard this story from someone else and they explained it to me like the applause was in support of him. If I was on that plane, I would have applauded the airline for kicking him off the plane as well.

If the man does not celebrate Christmas, then out of courtesy, he could at least have said, "same to you." It's not like they were wishing him any ill. There is no excuse for him to become that irate about it. His rage over the situation demonstrates a serious heart issue!

Now you have me wondering. I read the article several times and it doesn't say why the passengers applauded. You may be right with your initial understanding. I emailed the author of the article and hopefully he will get back to me with a definitive answer.

I have to say, if the people applauded FOR this guy, then we as a society are much worse than I already know we are in regards to relationship with God.

Amen to that...I was sitting on a Qantas A-380 Airbus on the L.A. tarmac 7 weeks ago and a dude two seats over was tripping out about flying....the on board doctor and who ever was in charge questioned the guy like 4 times about being able to make the flight and then after quite a bit of alcohol and him still tripping out they removed him, his luggage and we went on our merry way after a two hour delay....spent almost 18 hours on that plane....was flying to Sydney, Australia.......WOW!

I don't think his being led off the plane had anything to do with his feelings toward christmas. He was led off the plane because his demeanor wasn't conducive to the kind of experience the airline wants people to remember. With all of the fear mongering going on in the media, airlines need to do what they can to reduce passenger anxiety.

I'm sorry you had that experience, but then again, much better to have had that happen prior to takeoff. I've never been to Australia. I can't imagine how nice it is there.

You're absolutely correct. People in America have the right to their own opinion, so he was not led off the plane because of his views on Christmas, it was because of his hostile demeanor.
