In Jesus' statements in Matt. 5 that reflect things stated in the Law such as "Thou shalt not commit murder" simply reflect the basic principles of the law. When he says "but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire" he is establishing the link between one's attitude toward his brother and the end result of that attitude. You begin to not commit murder by not hating your brother. You begin not hating you brother by not even so much as regarding him as a fool. The law "Thou shalt not commit murder" is simply the basic principle. What Jesus is showing them is HOW you do not commit murder.

Calling one's brother a fool demonstrates a contempt for one's brother. Contempt leads to hatred, hatred leads to murder. Having contempt for your brother is to stand as a "danger" signal. "Whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." This person is in danger of acting on that contempt perhaps even in the extreme act of murder.

Justin,
Once again, OldHermit is correct!! You hate the sin but not the sinner. We are called to love our brothers, regardless of what they do or who they are... Remember, Christ's message is about love... He sees hating your brother the same as committing murder, and adultery is like murder to Him... It's about love. Hate sin, evil, but love the sinner, as Christ loves you, the sinner. Remember, He gave his life for us sinners before we were saved......

Yes. The issue with adultery is the same as that of murder. "You shall not commit adultery" in verse 27 is expanded upon by "everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her..." How does on not commit adultery, by not looking at a woman to lust after her.

That would pretty much expose some users who call others fools then. Uh-oh.

I would agree with the notion that having contempt for another can lead to an act of irreversible sin. But, i may dare to say also that Jesus was speaking in a slightly different context than that of the psalmist. It is important to recognize the act of the sinner as one of foolishness, one completely devoid of reason and wisdom. THerefore, those who continue in that way must be regarded as fools and vocalized as a warning, as there comes a point where their actions become so subversive that they cause others to fall. I think that Jesus may have been referring to a gratuitous, unqualified, mean-spirited and possibly bigoted sentiment, that reflects more of an abusive position, than one of warning or correction.

Fools are someone that has no abilities and which they are worthless, like an idiot. Back in those days, they were like the mentally and physically disables that were use as Jesters. They'll let people to make them look foolish so that the people can release their anger or have a few laughs; and in return for that laughter, they'll give them a few cent so that they can live off of since they doesn't possessed any working skills. But God definition of a fool is someone that hasn't have a soul and which they are worthless and which they always choose to make the wrong decisions; they are only here to live and die, and that is it for them.

Anger against someone without cause is similar to not forgiving a brother who repents, it brings you under God's judgement. Vilifying a brother as being worthless (Raca) would bring them before the Sanhedrin (church council). And calling someone a "fool" as described, is a judgement of condemnation, where a person steps on God's domain by rendering a person as having no value. It goes far beyond the recognition of foolish behavior, but is unjustifiably scorning a brother and being mean-spirited for the purpose of hurting another without cause. When Jesus called the Pharisees "Ye fools" (Luke 11:40), he didn't do it without cause, but as a point of fact. jmo

Why did Paul and Jesus call people foolish when Jesus taught us not to call our brother a fool?

Deciding someone is a fool, and stating so, is a judgement call. And all judgement and revenge belong to God. He created us and has the right, we do not have that right. If God does His job He is not sinning. But if we do God's job we are sinning. However, God does put certain people in a position to exercise His authority on His behalf- such as Moses, police, judges, armies, even parents. But He will never put one of us in a position to do His job of deciding who is a fool and is going to hell.

i think God shares with us who are fools in His word, He says, don't call brother a fool, not everyone is brothers and sisters. i'm not saying that the fool never will be a brother or sister, but until they believe they are considered a fool. i think

Hi Kaycie, if you are stating that being considered a "fool" is synonymous with being condemned to hell, then yes, that is solely God's domain. But, for Christians who are to be the "Salt of the Earth", wise, and able to judge between right and wrong (1 Cor. 6:1-5), it is incumbent upon us to discern and to rebuke any act of imprudence, especially against those who cause harm or corrupt others (1 Tim. 5:20, Prov. 13:24). Abuse is always a sin, but recognition and correction of iniquity is not. There are many verses in the bible where either Jesus or the apostles harshly rebuked sinners for their degenerate ways, even to the point where they caused them to go blind, or to die (Acts 13:9-11, Acts 5:9). In other words, to me, any act of sin is an act of foolishness and should be labelled accordingly.

Matt.5:22 speaks about brothers, brethren. The unbelievers are not brethren. They are called fools in the word of God because of their pride, thinking they are smarter than God and that they don't need the one true God.

ps 14 v 1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. etc...but when one repents baptized and receives Gods Holy Spirit (must) they are now his child , dont call a brother in Chist a fool, you are calling Gods child and it is his to chasten etc not you.

If there is a misunderstanding about scripture, you can be sure it is on the side of man. GOD does not make mistakes.
If you take a look at the verses below and check the definitions from the Strongs Concordance, you will see that it is completely two different definitions for the word fool.
In the verse in Matthew, it speaks of calling someone morally stupid, basically saying that the person has no hope of being saved. It means that YOU are not the judge. YOU don't know that persons situation, whereas GOD knows all things. Everybody goes through things in life that affect them and GOD knows if that person has a basically good spirit and will come out of it, but YOU don't. So don't set yourself up as judge. If you do, aren't you trying to put yourself in GOD'S place?

In the verse in Psalms, it's a different kind of fool. The one that is basically blind or stupid. You know, the kind that acts like an idiot and doesn't see what is right in front of them. There are plenty of those out there, but it's not the same as setting yourself up as judge when you call someone that. It just means you are noticing their behavior.

So, don't call someone 'Moros', or you set yourself up as judge. But noticing someone is an idiot is a whole nother story.

Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
