Was the Sabbath abolished?
Should Christians observe the 4th commandment?
Or is it still in effect like the other 9 commandments?

Please respond with biblical evidence :)

Depends on your understanding of Romans 14:6

Righteousness cannot come by the law only the knowledge of sin. Our righteousness is found in Christ by grace.

The law was not abolished but the law was fulfilled by Christ.

For the cause of Christ

The ones that believes what Jesus has said, are exempted from the laws; but they must truly believe and must does what He desire us to do, and that is to merciful and understanding. But if they doesn't believe, they are under the laws. And the Sabbath that is at the end of the week isn't the only Sabbath that suppose to be done, all of them must be done; it says to keep my Sabbaths, not Sabbath. So which is easier, to practice the laws, or to forgive sins? Only God can do both.

notuptome:

The truth isn't relative. It's either the Sabbath was abolished, or it wasn't. But let's look deeper into what Paul is talking about in Romans 14.

Romans 14:1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

Clearly Paul isn't talking about any commandment, but merely about 'doubtful disputations'. There are some days that some consider important, such as a birthday for example, but others like myself don't hold these close to the heart. Another example would be that maybe some Christians think that celebrating the 4th of July is important, and they do it onto God, but others don't. Paul encourages us to not argue about these things. But the 4th commandment, nor any other commandment is a matter of 'doubtful disputations'.

I would like to further add that there were also Jews in the Roman church, not just gentiles. And we know that Jesus expected his followers in Jerusalem to keep observing the Sabbath. Remember that most of these were Jews by birth.

Matthew 24:20
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day:

I will add that both Jews and Gentiles in the Roman church knew the law. They weren't ignorant of it:

Romans 7:1
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

As we can see, clearly Paul wasn't talking about the Sabbath day. Romans 14:6 does NOT teach that keeping the Sabbath or not is a matter subject to preference. It is a commandment still in effect.

You are wrong my friend. We are not exempted from keeping all of the laws. There are some laws, such as the 10 commandments for example, that are still in effect.

If what you say is true, then is it ok to steal, covet, kill?

Your reasoning does not harmonize with the teachings of Jesus.

pengy, why ask a question to which you've predetermined the answer? :)

It's no coincidence that the number 7 in the Bible stands for holiness and perfection. The seventh day hasn't been abolished but fulfilled in Christ. He is our Sabbath! We're to rest in Him.

[h=1]Hebrews 4:9-11 (NIV)[/h] [SUP]9 [/SUP]There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; [SUP]10 [/SUP]for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[SUP][a][/SUP] just as God did from his. [SUP]11 [/SUP]Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Most of Messiah's recorded miracles were done on Sabbath. It is a day for healing, no wonder satan wanted it destroyed, but it is not destroyed....Exodus 31;13 Tell the Israelites: You must observe My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, so that you will know that I am Yahweh who sets you apart.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

(Colossians 2:13-19)

abolished? no.

a law for me to judge or be judged by? no.

Emmanuel has come. He is the substance.

Hebrews 4:9-11
[SUP]9 [/SUP]There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

There is a law and the spirit of the Law.

The spirit of law is love. Everything we do without love is nothing. I don't thing it make any different if you go to church on Saturday or every day. if you don't have love than it nothing.

What the different worship the Lord on Monday or Sunday or Saturday.

Jesus look at our heart not what look like from out side.

Matt 22

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

What did JESUS do on the day of sabbath, while the religious Jews who follow Moses rested?

Didn't JESUS answer them by saying, when they cautioned HIM about violating the day of Sabbath, that;

"My FATHER is always working, I too must work."

What does this teach Christians to do on the day of Sabbath, when the Jews bound by the Law rested?

Believe and do according to the Grace and Truth of the New Covenant, as how your MASTER did, in faith witnessing, righteousness that exceeds the ones of the Pharisees that JESUS gave.

Those who want to practice what the Jews of the Law of Moses practiced, then that person might as well be 'circumcised' as well.

Apostle Paul said about the bondage the Law of Moses, can cause to the 'flesh', that;

"If you obey one letter of the Law, you must obey all."

"If you disobey even to the least, you are under 'curse'."

Deliberately JESUS 'worked' on the Sabbath, the rest day for the Jews, for HE went into the temple and liberated the sick and lame Jews, and called them to walk freely.

To the Jews the Sabbath observance has become a 'tradition' of men, not knowing the true meaning of it. JESUS knew the full meaning of the Sabbath and practiced accordingly to GOD's will. That is why HE was able to boldly claim that;

"The SON of man is the LORD of/over the Sabbath."

That is why HIS righteousness teachings/words and practices exceeds the ones of the Pharisees, and therefore 'accomplished' the righteous requirement of the Law of GOD and nail them to the Cross.

And so we are called to 'practice' and 'abide' the same that is in 'the way', 'the truth' and 'the life' of the established and written New Covenant, and bear fruits and our fruits must 'abide', according to the 'liberating Law of CHRIST of the SPIRIT', 'liberating' from the 'carnality/fleshly', to SPIRIT/spiritual New Covenant sons and daughter of the 'Heavenly Jerusalem of Sarah.

As it is written, as a reminder and a stir up of memory that;

"To him who have ears, let him listen."

We are not under any part of the old law, including the ten commandments, including the sabbath day. Everything is now done spiritually under Christ. Our sabbath rest will be when we rest with God in heaven forever. We are under the laws of Christ (not Moses). (Romans 7:1-4, Matthew 28:18, Galatians 5:13,14).

I'm glad you see the truth of the Sabbath! :)

Because there are people who are following the satanic lie that christians shouldn't keep the Sabbath, a claim for which there is not biblical support.

Dear Tintin, I agree that Jesus Christ is our rest. To be more specific, our rest from the bondage of sin. But where in the Bible do we find that his appearance/sacrifice replaced or rendered obsolete the 4th commandment which commands us to rest from this world's duties? I'll tell you what, you won't find it dear Tintin. It's not in the Bible.

Furthermore, Jesus didn't fulfill the 4th commandment, since it wasn't a prophecy, he obeyed it. He fulfilled the ceremonial parts of the law.

If you have any other argument, let it be based on the Bible, not on superficial arguments passed on by others.

With love in Jesus Christ.

I'd rather a relationship with Christ than chains of religion.

Dear Kaycie, I sense that you're sincere in your response and standpoint. However, I must tell you that you're arguments are flawed. I agree that we're not under the law, however, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't obey it.

For example, should we kill or steal, since we're not under the law? Think about it and you'll understand that "not being under the law" doesn't mean what you think it means.

I agree that by entering eternity with God we'll be entering into his Sabbath rest. But what does that have to with the 4th commandment? Does a promise abolish the commandment, if it does, where in scripture did you find it? This argument is also flawed.

The law of Christ is the same as the law of love. The law of Christ is no different than the law of God. Let's analyze these and you'll see that you're missing the point of the law of Christ, which is love.

If you love God with all of your heart, mind, and soul, and your neighbor as yourself, you will easily obey the 10 commandments.

If you love God: 1. You will have no other Gods 2. You will not make any graven image.. 3. You will not take His name in vain.. 4. You will remember to keep the Sabbath holy... These are the first 4 commandments of the 10.

If you love your neighbor: 5. You will honor father and mother 6. You will not kill 7. You will not commit adultery 8. You will not steal 9. You will not lie 10. You will not covet...

Love equips us to obey God and His law. You can't divorce love and God's law. These two are tightly entwined.

Romans 7:1-4 This passage explains that we have died to the law, it has no more dominion over us. We are now capable of obeying it. It nowhere tells us that we shouldn't obey it. Like I mentioned already, this argument is flawed.

Matthew 28:18 This verse tells us nothing about the Sabbath being abolished.

Galatians 5:13,14 I already explained that through love we are able to obey. Love eases the walk with God, it doesn't erase His law. Otherwise sin wouldn't exist.

Dear Kaycie, we as Christians must keep the 4th commandment if we truly love God. If you find in the Bible that we shouldn't keep it, please post it here. Otherwise, consider that you might be breaking God's law.

With love in Jesus Christ.

Where is the 'laws of Christ' is written and as we believe HE taught them, which HE called us to 'practice/do', in order for us to become under them in obedience and exceed in righteousness?

In Matthew 28:18 you'll see that ALL authority has been given to Jesus. If Jesus has all authority, that no longer leaves any authority for Moses. Romans 7:1-4 backs this up by giving an example of marriage, and shows us that if we are 'married' so-to-speak to Moses AND Jesus, that that would be committing spiritual adultery.

If you continue from Matthew 28:18, and go to verse 19, you will see Jesus give orders by the authority given to Him. He orders His apostles to Make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Did Moses give any such order when he had authority? No.

If you continue from Matthew 28:19 and go on to verse 20, Jesus continues His orders, "...and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you." Notice that? Instead of commanding us directly from His mouth, He gave it to the apostles to give to us. Therefore, the laws of Christ are given to us throughout the new testament. Then at the end of the new testament Christ says, "I am coming soon and My reward is with Me. Reward for what? For obeying HIS laws given to us through the apostles who wrote them down in the new testament. Therefore, for example, when the book of Romans orders us to not be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good, that order comes from Christ.
