Nobody is saying they are without sin, at least not that I have seen on this thread at least, because they would be lying.
With that being said however, there is a difference in saying you are without sin and saying you can go a day, week, or even a month without sinning. If you don't believe that then it just means you may not be as far along as others in the faith. It does not mean that person is better than you, or you are better than them.
It is a true biblical teaching that the Holy Spirit was sent here to do just that, make you stronger in areas you are weak and help you to abstain from sins and not let them control you. I can not believe this would not be possible because the bible says all things are possible with Him through the believer. Things have not changed from the Apostles to now, as we still have the same teachings the Lord taught, and the Lord always followed it up that if we don't believe we can do something. He would tell us all the same as He told the Apostles, "you of little faith. "
Actually some do say they do not sin.

You can paint it blue, purple and or neon orange and it will not change the fact that those who say they are without sin are liars.....period!
We are not perfect nor will we ever be perfect, but we can gain victory over SIN and lay aside every sin that does beset us.

Kenneth - my question wasn't really a question per se. I was actually questioning your definition - "a mental possession of assurance that you will receive it.....".

See you do believe in works salvation -
walk in love, obedience, forgiveness, and mercy. You do that and salvation is assured of . . . .

Well I tell you what, walk the opposite of love, obedience, forgiveness, and mercy and see where it gets you.

For the bible says if you hate you will not have salvation..........

The bible says if your not obedient you will not have salvation...........

The bible says if you don't forgive others you will not be forgiven and have salvation.............

You can say what you want about works based salvation, but the debate about that is works based argument is that those who follow this way use it to earn salvation. Problem that you all do not see with that is that we do and stand for love, obedience, forgiveness, and mercy is because the bible makes it clear that a true believer will have all those in their walk. And it clearly states a true faith has them, and a false faith will not !!!

Is it possible to be completely selfless? Just one example of doing something for someone that doesn't benefit you will do.

Actually some do say they do not sin.

Well are they actually saying they do not sin, or are they saying they can go a day, week, or month without sinning ?

And are they talking about pre-repentance/confession or post repentance/confession. Because if you have repented/confessed your sins then you do have a clean sheet until you sin again. Then when that happens you confess it you keep your clean slate, so that when you stand before the Lord; God will see you as perfect and sin free....

I am not a betting man, but I would lay odds that out of everybody that has posted on this thread there is not one person who has went one day, one week or even a month without 1 (one ) sin.................!

do you do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit but in humility always consider others better than you consider yourself?
Asking such a question actually works against you in asking it. My focus in life is Jesus Christ and walking after the Spirit. I strive every day to think and do things for God on a daily basis. Not so as to be saved, but because I walk with God and want to let His light shine thru my life.

What you do not understand is that we also stand for love, obedience, forgiveness, and mercy.
And every person that is truly saved will have those Godly traits.
Those who do not have not lost their salvation because they were never saved.
But we also confess that we fail--SIN--
We do not live in sin nor does sin dominate our life as some have charged.

you didn't answer the question because of you said yes you know you're lying and if you said no you're admitting that being sinless is impossible. Hi there rock and a hard place.

Yeah there were people who made that charge against Jesus as well......Pharisees....lost men who trusted into their own righteousness and walk while condemning all of the sinners around them.......!

Well if you would make that bet you would lose money all the time.
Because that was exactly what was behind Paul's teaching, and what the bible states the Holy Spirit is here to do. To help us walk and keep walking properly, and whenever we backslide it would because we are not listening to that guidance. People can call it our conscious all they want, but whenever we have a thought to do something not proper we should hear that voice inside of us telling us not to. That is the Holy Spirit speaking, it falls on us to obey it or not. A continuance of disobeying Him and His power inside of us would be the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Walking in a form of godliness but denying His power working in you to change you....................

Keep dreaming Kenneth and trusting into your self righteous attitude which in itself is sin....!

I suggest you study more...blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is to equate the work of Christ to the work of the devil instead of the H.S.........WOW!

There in is the issue though, and that is do you just stand for it or do you also walk in it ???
Because walking in those things fully would keep you from sinning, because love does no wrong, obedience to His teachings will not lead you to sin, and having a forgiving heart would not see no wrong done by your or to others as well.
And if you walk in those and then say it is impossible to go one whole day, or even a couple days as I will start out light with those who are still struggling, is a contradiction.

So I ask again. Gimme just one example of doing something for others that is completely selfless and altruistic and in no way benefits you.

That is absolutely correct we have assurance of salvation right now by walking in love, obedience, forgiveness, and mercy.
The point that I have been trying to make, and that the bible states is that it is an assurance of it right now and not an actual physical possession right now.

Romans 2:7
To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
While you may or may not agree with me: To clarify for our other readers here, I don't believe this is teaching Works Salvationism. We have assurance of salvation by the fact that God lives within us and by the fact that He has transformed us spiritually. We are renewed (born again) and have the Lord living within us because we repented of our sins and accepted Him as our Savior. We accepted the free gift. This then leads us to continue in well doing in order to wait patiently for the Glorification process whereby God will one day call us home (or save us) to be with Him. We have assurance because God's Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16). The keeping of His good ways is just another confirmation that God is indeed living within us (1 John 2:3, 5). However, it is not our only confirmation, though.
