Is it selfish to choose something to avoid suffering?
Yes.
Now, I think the word 'selfish' has shades of meaning and usages. If a person has already had more slices of pizza than anyone else at the party, and takes the last one even though she knows others want it, I think she would be called 'selfish'. A person who turns on a light to avoid stubbing her toe, wouldn't be thought of as 'selfish'.

In some sense, people try finding that love and acceptance here since as humans we're programmed to want to love and be loved. This is the fact no matter which end of the globe you're in and what type of life you lead. If one can find such acceptance, then why not?

Some may expect that love once they reach the afterlife because they were given little to none while they're living on earth. Some may have that love and acceptance but want more than what they receive. The idea of there being no more hunger, hatred, war, disease, pollution etc. is something that we can't have as a reality here, and yet once one hears that heaven may be just that then of course they will want to have such freedom as to where we're left in the bondage of what's listed here.

wow, justanotheruser!,

you have a very insightful mind -
it's appreciated :)

it is very hard to grasp what's God's Kingdom will be like,
with all of the 'negative-influence' removed.

we as humans have no way of knowing this, because the
world is filled-up with wickedness and corruption -

like it is written:

'Eye has not seen nor ear has not heard what God
has prepared for those that LOVE Him'. -
and again,
'the whole creation waits for the manifestation
of the 'sons of God'.
But fear not, for it is written, 'the desert shall blossom as the rose'.

If heaven is a place of happiness, joy and love (Pleasure) and hell is a place of torture, suffering and separation from love (Pain)

Do you think that what christians seek is the same as what they say the worlds seeks, however christian hope they will receive (Pleasure) later.
Life in Heaven is Joy in Spirit and not Joy in flesh. Its different.
Its not something that can be enjoyed with the normal five senses we have.

One must 'Taste and See that God is Good'.
Experiencing is different than theory.Christian Walk is not like a life full of worldly pleasures,if it is then there is no need to become a Christian.
Christians seek Salvation(Eternal),worldly people have their pleasures here and end it here. They do testify so.So there is a big difference.
"If Christ didn't die and rise up again then we eat,be merry and die tomorrow(end life or do whatever)" - this is Christian way.Life doesn't end here for Christians.

God Bless.
