In the natural, male lions never hunt, only females do and the females hunt as a pride/group.
Females use the male lion in a very interesting way. They will have sit him at one end of the their established hunting grounds, while they go around to to the other end of the hunting grounds.
In the middle of the established hunting grounds are the herd of Gazelle. The female lions stalk the Gazelles and are evenly spaced between themselves no more than 3 feet apart and have formed a funnel. They then stop and stay completely out of sight of the Gazelle's.
The oldest female of the pride is at a high point and watches across the entire hunting ground and waits until she see's the other females stop and that the funnel has been formed. She then out of sight of the Gazelles, goes up to the male and gives him the sign to ROAR!
He Roars and every gazelle stops feeding and prancing. About 3 minutes later another loud Roar. During this time the Gazelles ears are turning while they are frozen and stand still and by the third ROAR have discerned the direction the ROAR is coming form.
In a Flash, all the herd do a 180 degree turn and sprint away from the now Constant ROARING and they sprint right into the funnel created by the females and to their sudden and inescapable death.
The female pride kills enough and take back a whole gazelle for the oldest female and the Oldest Male that roared.
Deception is the key to this type of Lion attack.
Interestingly enough, it has been documented that a few of the older and seasoned Gazelle will run towards the Roar and right past the male and oldest female and make it out of the hunting grounds alive.
