To me love means...to give all goodness...and kindness, in as much abundance to others as your soul, in care of the Holy Spirit will allow.

Paul defines what love does here

1 Corinthians 13

[SUP]4 [/SUP]Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [SUP]5 [/SUP]It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. [SUP]6 [/SUP]Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [SUP]7 [/SUP]It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Haha...do you know Michael65...I am a poet, and I just now looked up Websters definition of 'love'...it said..." Intense feeling of deep affection."...Oh no no no...lol...that is HIGHLY underated...'cute' definement. But love is more powerful, stronger, and deeper than that! :)

Thanks but a meaning is what I need here. I had a Christian collage student ask me today. I did my best to answer him . I don't feel I got it completely right. I told him that too. I'm hoping to do better if it happens again.

Looking for a completed meaning.
Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

John 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

1 John 4:8
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 4:10
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Love is a decision. We are commanded to love God and our neighbor.

Ultimately, love is from God. It is a virtue, a strength that will move one to sacrifice everything and all things - even one's life -for God, for others, for truth.

It's an intense, self-less desire to see another flourish. There are all types of love, whether it be romantic, familial, or love coming about from friendship, but I think what I wrote applies to all types.

I didn't include selflessness in my definition. That helpful. Thanks.

I don't know about not failing to define love. It's not at all easy. I thought it would be but once I started to try. I found that is very complicated. I must have talked to the guy about it for 20 minutes and still I don't think I got it right. Not all of it anyway.

Ultimately I had to say that you have to think of all the words that define love and then define each word. Then you have to think of all the staments that mean love and define them. After that I told him that love is like a mustered seed. It just grows into a big tree of information. I was strating to think it has an infinite meaning. That's why I'm asking on here.

I always look to this verse, too, when thinking of Love. No matter how often I read it, it speaks volumes and answers any questions I may have. -Student

It is very possible to not being fully able to define "LOVE" until we are completely immersed in the presence of Jesus when we enter into heaven. Here on earth without a doubt know in our heart & feel the Lords unconditional Love. As Jesus says here we see things dimly, but in heaven we are face to face with the author of Love. I can give you a complete answer when I get to heaven someday:)

I'm thinking along those lines too. I would like to be better able to help someone when they ask. Wouldn't you?

Thanks this is really important but it doesn't define love just gives a wonderful example of it.
First of all, it's from the Bible, so it is NOT just a wonderful example of it.

Second, the sacrifice of Jesus a wonderful example? No. It is THE standard. It is who God is. You will find no greater definition, explanation, example of love than what is found in the Bible.

If you can't understand or know or define love from the example of the Bible, you just might be trying to be philosophical, intellectual. I mean not to be insulting. Put faith and trust in the Bible. Love is from God. Go to His word to learn what it is. That's why I gave Bible verses. Webster's can't give a better definition than that of the Bible.

Use the Bible. Read what it says love is. Then write what you've learned from it.

If you use a dictionary, you will be left with having to look up other words. So meditate on what the Bible teaches and shows. The verses below and what they address would be a good beginning. You don't need to study every verse where the word love is found in the Bible.

Here's an example.
I know SIN is detestable to God. It is repugnant to Him. Etc.
Yet what did God do about OUR SIN?
And then continue with those sort of thoughts and questions. I

Here's a question of mine. Is love a power? Some say so. I would not disagree. But it is not independent. It is more, for God is love. It is a virtue. It is a quality. It is divine.
(I would like to know what atheists have to say about love. Where did it come from?)

Focus on the sacrifice and 1 John, especially chapter 4.

Oh, and an EXAMPLE speaks volumes more than a formal definition of a word. Keep that in mind. It will serve you well, as it has me.

Now here's the post again. Please read it carefully.
"Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
It is a virtue, a strength that will move one to sacrifice everything and all things - even one's life -for God, for others, for truth."
