Matthew 5

The Beatitudes

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

My initial thoughts are... Beatitude comes from the Latin word beatus which means blessed... they guide, point and teach values... Love the opening of this chapter, Matthew 5:2 "he opened his mouth and taught them" simple for such a layered teaching...

I believe that Jesus spoke these words in order to help people adjust their attitudes and outlook.

I believe that they are able to perform the same adjustment in our time.

These words are as much at variance with the values of our society as they were with the values of the peop[le of Jesus time on Earth.

I believe they reveal the heart nature of God and hopefully we reflect that nature through the new birth.

It is important to recognise that the beatitudes were not general platitudes. They were spoken to 'the blessed ones' (makarioi), in other words Jesus' wider group of disciples. The fact that they enjoyed the virtues described proved that they were truly 'blessed ones'.

it is not necessarily blessed to be poor in spirit if we have no One to look to. But to have poverty of spirit in combination with love and obedience to God is to have been truly blessed.

it is not necessarily blessed to be mourners. But to mourn spiritually over our shortcomings when we are walking in love and obedience with God is to be truly blessed.

it is not necessarily blessed to be meek. But to be meek because we experience the love and care and requirements of God is to have been truly blessed

Christianity doesn't own Christ's beatitudes. Some were on the books long
before he spoke about them. For example:

†. Matt 5:3 . . Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.

†. Isa 66:2 . . But on this one will I look: on him who is of a poor and
contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.
_______________________________________________________

†. Matt 5:4 . . Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

†. Ps 55:1-2 . . Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my
supplication. Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and
make a noise
_______________________________________________________

†. Matt 5:5 . . Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

†. Ps 37:10-11 . .For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea,
thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek
shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of
peace.
_______________________________________________________

†. Matt 5:7 . . Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

†. Hos 6:6 . . For I desire mercy, not sacrifice

No buts. Christianity does not own the beatitudes: Judaism owns them. In
point of fact, Judaism owns the entire Sermon On The Mount.

What is going on here because this is foolishness debating on who which religion has ownership over Beatitudes! Beautiful Beatitudes came from God above! Enough of this foolishness!

Beatitudes came from God
That's true because the words that Christ spoke were God-given words.

†. John 3:34 . . For he is sent by God. He speaks God's words, for God's
Spirit is upon him without measure or limit.

†. John 8:26 . .He that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those
things which I have heard of Him.

†. John 8:28 . . I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak these things
as the Father taught me.

†. John 12:49 . . I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me,
He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

†. John 14:24 . .The word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's who
sent Me.

So then, when the Jews refused to comply with Christ's words, they were
actually rebelling not against Christ, but against God who gave Christ those
words.

†. Luke 10:16 . . Whoever rejects me; rejects the one who sent me.

The Beatitudes are present when one is in the blessed state of entire sanctification whereby the power of God enables one to walk without sin. They are not things to struggle for in the flesh. Dead flesh = the Beatitudes.
