I've always wanted to ask this... is there a word in English that means "to be in a relationship with someone"? I thought it was "dating", but I've been told that "dating" doesn't necessarily means commitment...

Committed togetherness. That's my thought. But in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Says: "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

So Committed Togetherness is my Thought. Not that I want it. I'm happy alone. So dating means nothing to me.

I have found that the terminology changes with your age group. The very young seem to use boyfriend/girlfriend, the thirty something seem to use "my man" a lot or even "the boy" to refer to their BF and I seem to notice that folks 40 and up seem to use significant other a lot.

Dating and courting mean different things to different people. I don't think there's any one word to describe a committed relationship. If I were in one, I'd call it dating. But then Christian dating looks different (or should look different) to the world's practice of dating.

So there isn't really one single word that you say and whoever hears it (regardless of faith or age) will get the meaning... :) that's what I thought... cause I've used that term sometimes and it always seemed to me that I had to give further explanation for the person to understand what I really meant... :)

Yes, English is a fickle and sometimes contradictory language. After all, English is a mongrel combination of Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, French and choice words from many other languages.

I try not to get hung up on terminolgy when talking with folks because during the conversation most people will get to know you, your faith, and who you are so naturally during that conversation your references to people will shed light on the meaning of the relationship.

Does this make sense?

Sorry if I missed the point of the question but when I hear a fellow christian talk about the man or woman they are "dating" I assume it is refering to a committed relationship. Exceptions are for those who caveat it with this woman/man I recently met and have been on a few dates...

Hope this helps.

Sydlit...I will definetely PM to discuss recipes. There are many in my family who say a Pierogi without kraut is an imposter. I prefer the potato, cheese, and garlic ones..lol. I make a few of the batches with kraut and homemade horseradish for the holidays. That really clears out your sinuses.
How very nice, thank you. It may be a little while, as I may not be here as frequently for a while, (and the crowd erupts), til some things get situated rightly, but I look forward to connecting.

Thx. You'd be surprised the thought-police peanuts that lurk the gallery. Some ppl seem to need to find happiness stealing it or at least neutralizing others, I guess. Btw, Tull fan, per-chance? And whats a spotify, and can I use it to spot-a-spy?!
Mmm, theirs is a hard lot.

Tull? Not as much as everyone else seems to be, but yeah, I like some Tull.

Spotify is a music service, sort of along the lines of Pandora (but not quite Pandora). I figured I could spend a ton of money on CDs, a ton of time ripping the music to my computer, and invariably use a ton of real estate storing the CDs, or just pay a nominal monthly fee for a pretty good library. (Maybe one day I'll cave and go for the CDs still.)

I see, thanks, I really should try to catch up to the 21st century (I've already got the 'Schitzoid-Man' part of it) My old music is all LP's, most of my Bible studies are cassette tapes, and I only have about a dozen worship CD's. Shame on me, but if I had it to do all over, would I do any different? Anyway, thanks for the info, and Btw, thanks for the friendship in here; ... 'preciate it.

Let's talk about this! Some seem to think it means being in a monogamous relationship. Others operate under it meaning not that, but just like, a casual thing; like window shopping (that sounds bad, but bear with me).

What are your thoughts on it? What everyone's thoughts this, even?
