I just viewed a website that told the real reason for the drought(upper winds being allowed to go further north) and it's not a problem caused by us. The site is actually an advertising site, but along with telling people the reason for the drought, it is telling people how to grow food(vegetables and fish) at a very low cost and with very little water, which is great for the drought areas. I think the government should be promoting these aquaponic gardens that are being advertised at the end of the presentation. If farmers used this process, the water in CA would last longer and the food would be healthier. Maybe that's why the government doesn't want to promote them, they can't tell the farmers to use agribusiness' products like fertilizer and pesticides. This is the website: Food for Freedom

Most agricultural extension offices have all sorts of information (free) on home and small plot gardening. I also recommend that you look into the topics of square-foot gardening and ceramic pot gardening. Both methods are low water, organic, and can produce a substantial supplement to almost every household budget.

I have used raised beds for 15 years now. I have 3 now and they are each 8' x 4'. I get enough veggies to freeze for the winter. I do have to water a bit, but the garden is totally organic, and the produce tastes so much better than store bought. Raised beds don't take much room. We have them in a side yard here.

We did have issues with the deer eating the tomatoes, but my husband put in an 8 foot mesh fence. So they won't be eating it next year.

Gardening is fun and easy. When I grew up, all my aunts and my grandmothers had back yard gardens. I don't know why people have gotten away from growing their own food. It's not just about the money, but the satisfaction of knowing that even though I live in Canada, I can still produce my own food, and it is delicious!

I feel bad that this will be my first post on this site. I was hoping to comment on something more edifying. This post reminded me of when I was young and was given a cassette tape about the coming truckers strike that was going to empty the shelves off the grocery stores. It went on to describe a conspiracy involving the Trilateral Commission and The Illuminati that included President Jimmy Carter. Needless to say it was all a hoax.

Food for Freedom is a hoax. It is based on countless lies. Frank Tanner does not exist. The man's claims are all false. Like most conspiracies, he uses fear to sell something. In this case books with information that is available for free. He is currently offering his books at a discount price of $27. Again, all the information is available for free.

Yes, California has been through a drought. Currently it is experiencing the beginning of an El Nino, and there is massive flooding occurring. The author states there is no rain in the forecast. That is false. It has been raining a lot. Yesterday, there were flood warnings up and down the California coast. There was heavy snow falling in the Sierras. The author states there is a high pressure system off the coast of Washington that is forcing moisture to the north. This is also a lie. Their is a low pressure system off the coast of Washington and there is heavy rain falling in Washington and Oregon, as usual.

There is no government conspiracy. The military is not training to intercede and fight with looters. Lake Mendocino is currently at 57% capacity. Lake Sonoma is over 70% capacity. Lake Mendocino is not dry, as he suggested. He took a picture of a shallow end of the lake that was dry due to a drop in the level.

Who is Frank Tanner? An investigative journalist? Probably not. A charlatan preying on people's fears. Someone trying to make easy money by scaring people. He never once mentions the names of a single scientist who he claims supports his theory. He doesn't understand weather or climate. He made silly comments about Hurricane Katrina. The people were not out of food, their homes had flooded and they had to flee. Walmart is not part of a government conspiracy.

You can use the internet to disprove all of the false claims made in the bizarre youtube video. It's all quite preposterous.

Most people spend less than 10% of their grocery bill on produce, not 70 or 80% If you want to create a garden, go for it. They are hard work, bugs and animals and harsh weather can make it challenging. You will harvest a lot of vegetables all at once and they will mostly go bad if you don't can them. If it made sense, more people would do it.

Again, Food For Freedom is a hoax. It seeks to rip off people by scaring them into buying useless books about gardening.

I don't know much about "Food for Freedom", but I know a lot about gardening. I agree that if you are happy buying your fruits and vegetables, and/or meats, by all means buy them. My family has always been involved in home gardening, and we find it most rewarding. We also grow a variety of fruit and nuts. You are right about preservation, but anyone can learn how to can, dry and freeze fruits and vegetables. My family guide has always been the "Ball Blue Book". As I said earlier, most agricultural extension offices (all counties in my area have one) have gardening experts on staff, and a plenty of helpful publications that are free. If anyone is interested in additional sources, all universities with agriculture programs also provide programs for the communities that they serve.

It might be best to quit while you're behind. What does "drought will get worse" mean? What if it doesn't? What makes you think it will? A guy giving a false name who lies and says things like if the government knew about his youtube video they would surely shut it down, is not to be trusted and we should never publicize such a person. Those 20 news stations who refused to air his conspiracy theory did the right thing. You should learn from them.

California reservoirs are at various stages. Some are well over 50% full. This will likely be a heavy snowpack winter. I lived in Sacramento in 1985, when it rained for 30 straight days, causing all reservoirs to spill over and the American River to go from a flow of 3500 CFS to over 100,000 CFS. The levy's nearly failed and the downtown would have looked like New Orleans after Katrina. The highways leading up to the ski resorts were all closed down. They had over ten feet of new snow. There are wet years and there are dry years. That is why California built so many reservoirs to store water in. It's like an emergency fund people save for unexpected circumstances.

The current weather forecasts in California may offer hope for above average precipitation. If they get a good snow pack this winter, the reservoirs will fill to capacity again. I'm still trying to figure out the purpose behind posting that crazy video. Any explanation?

1985? That was then this is now.
I've lived in California nearly 60 years and this is definitely the worse. Where I am living in So. Ca. I have seen about two days of almost an inch. El Nino? Not yet.
I believe we are under a judgment and now to compound things we go and legalize Euthanasia.
I'm looking at the weather forecast for the next 15 days...nada.
These clowns in Sac. need to quit regulating, and quota-ing us to death and rather apply themselves to God...fat chance, 85% Democrat operated.

I agree with you. The politicians in Sacramento make decisions that harm a lot of farmers to benefit Delta Smelt or some other relatively insignificant concern.

I do view drought maps of the state and the central valley is among the worst hit places. I realize this was a serious drought. I don't understand the weather forecast, though. Just this morning I watched the satellite map that showed back-to-back storm systems lining up off the coast of California. The weatherman stated rains have already begun. I don't know if these qualify as pineapple express storm systems, but they appear to be part of the seasonal storm systems passing over California and dumping rain and snow. As you know, what matters most is the amount of moisture left in the Sierras, in the form of snowpack, that will melt and fill rivers and streams and reservoirs throughout the state. Living in Southern California has it's own challenge. As the population grows, so grows the need for more and more water. State attorneys work out water distribution from various sources. They often have disputes with Las Vegas and even Phoenix, fighting over water rights from major waterways. Fast growing cities in the Southwest have no caps on building permits. They assume someone will find more water.

The key has always been the ability to store water during wet years. More dams would help. Dams are no longer being proposed because they are no longer popular.

Key words......as to why many do not...

1. LAZY AS IT TAKES WORK
2. CONVENIENCE AS IN GROCERY STORES

There are more reasons. I watched a news show about people who die after eating vegetables they purchase from grocery stores, particularly health food stores. Many people want only organic vegetables. They don't like the idea of pesticides being used on crops. The downside is that organic vegetable need to be thoroughly scrubbed since deadly bacteria can still be present on them. 5000 people die each year from eating organic vegetables, according to that news show I watched. There was a number of people who died from eating spinach a year or two ago. It was contaminated with some type of fecal matter that was not properly washed off of it. In the last few months, the CDC tracked three deaths resulting from people eating salmonella contaminated cucumbers from Mexico. They stated 120,000 people suffer from salmonella infection, with 450 dying each year.

If you grow your own vegetables, you need to handle that produce carefully.

The Sacramento politicians seem to be a little like the India Hindus who won't eat cows or some other animals because they are afraid that they will be killing a reincarnated relative. Basically, both are worried about the wrong things because of their own, or others, beliefs.

Now that you've returned , care to address how totally wrong the website was about everything they said? Showing pictures of a lake at the dry end while not showing the lake is actually over half full. The idea that there is a high pressure system sitting off the coast of Washington was also untrue. Low pressure systems have been dumping loads of moisture on Washington, Oregon, and California.

I think you can safely conclude that when these guys lie to you about the weather, they are also lying to you about their aquaponic gardens. They are selling people something they can make for a fraction of that cost. Then, most people would have far more vegetables than they can eat. All to avoid a drought that has had little effect on food production. The whole thing was a scam.

What is the scam in this thread is saying that gardening is hard, and a home garden can kill people!! All those examples were from commercial agricultural of people dying. I've been gardening for over 40 years and I have never gotten sick from my own veggies. Between my mom, my grandmothers and aunts, they have over 200 years gardening and no one has ever gotten sick from their own garden, but they have eaten well, summer and winter!

I grew up on an area of farming in the prairies and just lived there for 15 years. No one got sick from their garden. I'm now living in an area famous for orchards and vineyards, esp. organic and no one is sick from eating fruit in their yard.

I am disabled and this had been one of my worst years in almost 20 years for pain and loss of mobility. Yet I easily planted and harvested a huge garden, plus giving away produce to family and neighbours. And no one is sick!

As for drought, it was a bad year in BC and lots of water restrictions on most places. However in the town I live in, there are bylaws which make people water their lawns, with in ground sprinklers. That way the city looks nice for tourists. No drought here!

If you want to come into CC and start posting arrogant and pompous posts, when you obviously don't have a clue what you are talking about, then be careful. Because there is a report button on every post, and people do use them. Although mostly not for the ignorant type claims you have been making, Sinnerman!

The topic is drought. I'll repeat, the topic is drought, not gardening. I'm happy your garden is so productive. Why don't you start a new thread about gardening.

Regarding the op's video by someone trying to sell over priced gardening books and materials, it begins by asserting a particular lake was nearly dry from the drought. I quickly and easily linked to a site with the State of California that shows water levels at all reservoirs. The one they tried to show was dry, is actually over 50% full, and that was before the recent heavy rains. They also stated there is a high pressure system stuck off the coast of Washington and it has been there for two years. That is also untrue. Produce is still on the shelves at grocery stores and at farmers markets or in your case, it is being grown successfully in home gardens. Please explain to be in your infinite wisdom, which of those claims is ignorant or untrue.

Believers tend to project too much. We all know that the future will bring many tribulations. We don't know when, but we know it's coming. There is a tendency to see every tornado or flood or drought or case of bird flu, or war as signs that the end is now upon us. The men who made the video were taking advantage of people's fears and trying to make money off of what you clearly and correctly described as an activity that is easy to do and can provide several families with ample fruits and vegetables. I think it was highly irresponsible to post the thread up to begin with. If someone comes across a web site saying Ronald Reagan is the antichrist, as many did years ago, they should look closely at the claims and the supposed proof before blindly accepting and posting something so easily disproven. Can we at least agree on that?

well, we are about 10 inches above average and have gotten rain for about days in row, normally it is dry down here in the south. so hopefully prayfully things will even out soon.

I was working as a correctional officer with The California Department of Youth Authority (CYA), in Sacramento, years ago. I spent five years attempting to get violent movies removed from viewing by the incarcerated youthful offenders. You had to be 18 years old to watch "R" rated movies outside of prison, yet we were showing them to offenders several years younger than that. Violent offenders watching violent movies. Who would think that's OK. I finally took a chance and asked the Sacramento Bee to run a story on it. It was front page on the Sunday paper. The politicians ran for cover, all pretending they had no idea what was going on. The governor called my boss at the prison and they appointed someone to screen the movies better. They already had a "video review committee that were allowing violent movies. They said the inmates preferred those movies. I came to believe the politicians in Sacramento must spend most of their day sleeping in their office.

Is this how you got to a post count of 13,689? As a former law enforcement officer, I felt compelled to jump into a debate about a police involved shooting where the person posting claimed the officer committed murder, despite knowing that the shooting had been investigated and the officer cleared of wrong doing. The thread devolved, as two people continued calling police murderers, psychopaths, sociopaths and other disrespectful names. One of the people has over 30,000 posts in less than two years. I think that's about 40-50 messages every 24 hours. Obsessive compulsive behavior come to mind. So I've provided some context to your snarky comment. Care to join a discussion on drought or is this how you pass the time?
