Hey Everyone,

Has anyone noticed how bathroom etiquette seems to have gone completely downhill?

One of my modern social pet peeves are women who go into a public restroom, phone in hand, and then proceed to have loud, personal conversations, often with their significant other, WHILE OBVIOUSLY USING THE FACILITIES at the SAME time. I'm not talking about just sitting there and talking. Rather, these women are talking and going the whole 9 yards all at once. I often wonder, "Does it bother the person she's talking to AT ALL?? Because if I can hear her 3 stalls down, I KNOW he can hear her."

Seriously. If I ever get a significant other, he is just going to have to wait in line a few minutes because nature's call will be the first to be answered (and hands washed) before I accept HIS call. And, I would hope he would have enough manners to call ME at a time other than when HE'S in the bathroom!

Tonight there was a woman in the Ladies' Room who was both talking and taking care of business so loudly that I'm pretty sure that the patrons in the Men's Room could probably hear her, too. And that just sets off the troll in ME, because my reaction to such rudeness is to needlessly flush the toilet in the next stall repeatedly while they're talking.

I figure, might as well make it a royal flush.

Now I realize some people will take me to task for this as being childish, uncalled for, and not very Christ-like, but I'm wondering--does this type of behavior bother anyone else?

And guys, do you witness this kind of action too???

I'm guessing men don't have entire conversations while THEY'RE in the restroom, but I could be wrong...

I'm thinking I should have titled this "Bathroom Etiquette Got Flushed A Long Time Ago."

*smiles*

I'm most prone to annoyance when it's co-workers who are still on the clock and stalling (literally), causing everyone else to have to pick up her slack.

I was raised in a generation without cell phones and don't carry mine when I'm working.

And yes, I'm a bit of a rebel at heart--it's not to hard to tell--though my rebellion tends to be against "social norms" I don't agree with.

Actually your story reveals more about you than her. :p
Just curious, blondie--do you ever say anything, or would you, to the woman in the story? (Or me... I'm assuming you would have yelled at me to stop flushing from behind the next door?! :))

Oh yes, men do hold all kinds of call while in the restroom. Disgusting if you ask me. I flush/fart/make noise as well to discourage it...

I had to laugh at this a bit.

The whole reason I posted this wasn't to talk specifically about myself or the woman in the story, but rather the disturbing fact that this kind of behavior now apparently seems normal and acceptable, especially to younger generations.

My question was simply if other people have observed this and does it bother them too? And I always like to give a little background information as to how I came up with the question.

I was just thinking, "If I were a parent, is this something I'd honestly have to teach my kids--have enough manners to finish in the bathroom before making a call--and don't waste your employer's time by doing so?"

I don't think it's just talking while using the facilities whether on the phone or not that is a problem. I have found that parents will let their children poke their head under the stall to see if anyone is using it or people just don't know how to pick up after themselves. I mean wash your hands and put that paper towel in the garbage, not on the floor next to it and by all means flush that toilet.

People are so strange.

Another thing I witnessed recently was a mother who had taken her young son into the Ladies' Room--no big deal, when I took a then-boyfriend's young sons out alone, I'd take them to the Women's Room as well.

The woman left her son alone in a stall for privacy while she waited at the sinks. But her son kept calling out repeatedly, "Mom, Mommy, Ma!!! Who's out there? Who's in (the bathroom besides me) me now?" And the woman proceeded to shout back to him, describing everyone who came in and out of the stalls in detail while letting him sit there. It was just bizarre to me.

The reason these things catch my attention is because I'm always wondering what I'd be teaching any kids I have an influence on about these situations, and how I would hopefully be able to instill good manners in them surrounded by such nonsense.

No. I would not have yelled at you nor would I have said anything to the woman. I may have left some gospel tracts by the sink though. :) Phil 4:8

I'm thinking... We need to print up some tracts emphasizing the principle of "wash and be clean"...

If someone calls me on the phone I don't want to hear their number 1 or number 2 noises. No thanks!

I have rarely seen this happen in the men's rest rooms in India. Most men in India still prefer to finish their "work" before picking up calls, and the minority few who do so get dirty stares from the rest of us. However, some may pick up their phones as soon as they are done and forget to wash their hands or clean up their mess. -.-

P.S. Here's a trivia - In India, you would not find signboards that say "bathrooms" because bathrooms are rooms where we take a shower; rest rooms or toilets are where we answer nature's call. ;)

Here in the States most commonly public signs still call them restrooms (still can't figure out why since no one is "resting").

It's not just the bathroom when it comes to a cell phone. I always feel like I'm eavesdropping if somebody uses their cell phone near me. Of course I'm not but I want to get away from it, their conversation should be none of my business.

I dated a man who used frequently used his cell phone in a bathroom; he was diabetic and had to pee alot. One day he dropped his cell phone in the toilet while he was going. He went to the store to get another phone, he had his in a ziploc, and the first words out of the clerks mouth were "toilet?" Evidently alot of men have the same thing happen.

Jesus Juked. What's going on? I find your responses to Kim here to be baffling or rude. I can't tell which.

Change "laptop sales" to "smartphone sales" and this graph is still pretty accurate.

I too, have done this very thing! Answering loud enough, to give cause for the conversation to become MUCH quieter......
