why are people so obsessed with tongues?
when the Apostles used tongues it was a tool they used to preach. the message of Jesus was the focus. yet today there are those that seem to think the whole point of it all is to speak in tongues. as if tongues are the end result. i dont get it.

Speaking in tongues to our heavenly Father and Lord is a great blessing from the God. Paul said in 1 Cor 14:5 that he wished that all of the Corinthians spoke in tongues.
We speak mysteries in the spirit to our Lord.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (NASB)
[SUP]2 [/SUP] For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
Praying in tongues build us up in the Lord. Jude 1:20 and the below verse.

[SUP]4 [/SUP] One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
Praying in tongues by passes our minds and prays according to our inner man of the heart...the new creation in Christ. We have limited understanding with our minds. Notice that the order is praying with our spirit comes first - then our mind...and we sing too with our spirit and with our mind.

When we pray in tongues - we bless the Lord and give thanks well - 1 Cor. 14:6-7
When we pray in tongues we speak of the mighty works of God and give Him glory - Acts 2
Personally I speak and sing in tongues every day! Paul spoke in tongues a lot because he said he spoke in tongues more then they all. 1 Cor. 14:18 Paul also said not to forbid to speak in tongues. 1Cor 14:39
There is a manifestation of the Spirit for the assembly of believers called the gift of tongues which needs to be interpreted ( these occur as the Spirit wills - not us ) but that is not to be confused with the personal devotional tongues available to all believers ( this we can do as we will..see 1 Cor. 14:14-15 ) for praying to their Father and Lord as can be seen in 1 Cor 14:2
I encourage all believers to ask the Lord about this blessing. It's free to all and will help us to grow spiritually as it builds us up in the Lord.

Not all spiritual gifts are given to all believers. Scripture is clear that we are each endowed with gifts, but not all gifts are given to every believer.
Biker.... you've gotten the answer several times.... you cannot do it.
I urge you to read what Paul said about spiritual gifts... he said that speaking in tongues are the LEAST desirable of the gifts. The gift of prophesy is SO much more desirable.
Even so, you (or anyone else) cannot "lead" someone to receive something from the Holy Spirit. These gifts are not something to "expect".. the Spirit decides what gift fits you... and likely it will be more than one.
Personally, I don't care if I NEVER speak an angelic tongue, as wonderful as that might be for my private prayer life... I much prefer more useful gifts, and I hope to acquire more, as the Spirit sees fit...
Two different types of tongues in scripture...as in the below which I will post again.
If the "tongues" given for the assembly is speaking out with a subsequent gift called the interpretation of tongues is used to speak to men for consolation and for comfort and for edification of the hearers - because it is the same as simple prophesy....then wwhy does the devotional tongues in 1 Cor 14:2 say that we are speaking unto God and not unto men.
So, you see there are 2 types of tongues - one for the personal prayer time for the Lord and one for the assembly of believers to bless them.
One speaking in tongues is to the Lord - the other which is as the Spirit wills ( with an interpretation ) is speaking to men.

Prophesy ( and all other gifts ) is a greater gift because it is for "others"..Paul always talked about being a giver of blessing and encouragement to others in the body of Christ.
This is the context of tongues ( devotional - personal prayer to the Lord ) being a lesser gift.
..praying with your devotional tongue is between yourself and the Lord. None of these gifts are nothing if not done in the love of God.
There is nothing wrong with receiving all that the Lord has for us. It's a blessing form the Lord to us.

Jesus told the disciples 17 times He was going to die and they still didn't get it...imagine if He started to tell them about speaking in the different languages of angels and men??
He also said - if I tell you of earthy things and you don't understand - how will you understand if I tell you of heavenly things?
Tongues is foolishness to the natural mind.
John 16:12-13 (NASB)

( I have seen people use human reasoning to wiggle out of the above statement to mean all kinds of things to take away the fact that Jesus said they will speak with new tongues )
The Lord is not going to force anyone to receive what He has for them...no pressure.....it's just a great blessing,...ask Him about it....He will lead you and be faithful to you!...He can be trusted to lead you the way you should go my brother...I'm off to bed now.....bless you!....

tongues as a language of a foreign nation, there are many examples in the bible, makes sense.
tongues as a unique heavenly language, almost nothing.
of all the great prophets such as Moses, Elijah and Samuel, no examples of this. and Jesus, the Son, the perfect union of this world and the heavens, one who had oneness with the Father, still no examples of this. seems strange.

if tongues was a unique heavenly language to speak to the Almighty, it would be the greatest of gifts. far greater than prophesy.
however if it is a foreign language, then pauls statement makes perfect sense.
