My mother uses omg or je..
Simply I told her that is a sin and she needs to repent of filthy language and using God's name in vain. Her response was that using God's name in vain is just saying a bad word followed by God. I disagree. And how do I help unsaved family members? God bless all.

I think it is a form of blasphemy. Tell your mother to use her name followed by a bad word. She will have less to account for one day!

You pray for them and humblely grow in wisdom from God and not the world. Display the fruits of the Spirit..love, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness and self control. Honor and respect your patents, stand up for the weak, help the poor, comfort the afflicted and study your Bible.

Respect your patents?

god is a word and not a name.

... omg omgosh good lord etc., is just expression. Take it easy, Christians... always remember we are not the police of faith or of cleaning up someone elses flesh.

"not that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy"

It's not blasphemy. The omg could mean oh my gosh, oh my goodness, etc.. Gosh and golly are NOT swear words, nor are they blasphemous.. If they say omg, and mean oh my God, then that isn't a good thing to say. I've always considered taking God's name in vain to be when someone says Jesus Christ in a swearful manner. Saying oh for God's sake isn't good, either. Though I have said it on occasion. :/

It's better not to Major in Minors. You'll alienate a whole lot less people.

Surprised you had to ask, to be frank about it.

I don't see how Americans don't consider "oh my god" taking God's name in vain? I mean, if you are not talking to God, why insist on saying oh my God? Why not say "wow" or "oh" or "ick" depending on the situation.

Imagine if someone said "oh my Willie" or "Oh my ladybug" .... it wouldn't make much sense would it? :p :D

Oris: You could tell her that it makes you feel bad, and ask her kindly not to do it around you, then leave it up to her if she uses it elsewhere :)

I can see it 2 ways....

1. In my opinion, it ISN'T actual blasphemy but I see no reason to use those terms. Again, Jesus knows your true heart so depending on how you use it...

For instance on 9/11 - I think that's all I heard from everyone... and rightfully so.

2. Do they do it just to annoy you? Which IS a sin... causing someone to stumble or belittling their faith is not something Jesus is going to take lightly...

Short for "oh my goodness", as some do use it, but are met with a big tadoo over nothing

The expression, is not the doctrine, that's why. The doctrine of "taking the LORD's name in vain", is what?

Also, have you ever spelled out "oh my god" with a capital G, not that it really matters, just an observation... how about spelling it like gawd, omgawd

Even though it's an unnecessary thing to say, since it IS some of our usual "Christian Cussing," you are absolutely right about few people even having the slightest idea what that statement was directly referring to in those days.

Mt 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Don't do it myself because I do not feel right about it but I don't impress my standards on others is such a situation as this.

My only reason for writing it out now was the context. I never ever use that expression , capital G or not

Well if vain means empty or without substance it pretty much means that we are not to use Gods name in an empty way or without substance. We first have to determine what Gods name is I suppose. Is Gods name God? Is it Jesus or Yahweh? Maybe its Robert but he goes by Bob? Lots of people say that gosh is just a variation of God. In the old times Gods name was un-utterable. Maybe we just shouldn't think about God in an empty or substance lacking way goshdarnit.

Cussing, it has no bearing on salvation or sanctification... have you read some of the church father's writings, wow! Although, I will say, not cussing, is pretty great and viewed as respectable manners. I watch my mouth, because I love & respect my grandpa and it is to his honor and this in turn is honoring myself, as a lady... thank you grandpa for your influence (smiling, even from heaven).

Nice post, the doctrine is "taking" the Lord's name in vain, not "using" it in vain, right?

[SUP]7 [/SUP]Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
