A friend of mine wrote this perspective on "The Great Commission": This is just a small part of his book, but I find it intriguing.

THE HARVEST IS PLENTIFUL
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” -MATTHEW 9: 35-38

Unless you’ve never darkened the door of a church in your life, the above scripture is one you’ve heard expounded upon a million and one times. It is often used to stir up missionary zeal and encourage people to get out and “win the lost”, for, as the verse states, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. We picture Jesus looking upon the throngs of humanity that are cascading into a fiery chasm of eternal punishment, and then turning to His disciples and urging them to go forth and reap a harvest for the Lord! The only problem is that nowhere is hell or judgment mentioned in this passage. Jesus is not commanding His disciples to pray for the raising up of Gospel laborers so that they can warn men of hell, but because “he saw the crowds… had compassion on them… because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”. When Jesus looked upon the crowds He saw their pain, misery, and confusion, and longed to see them impacted by the Good News of the Kingdom. This Good News included healing the sick, and telling men of the love and Grace of His Father.

What is my point? My point is that Christ’s primary concern was not for us to go into the world and warn them of a burning hell, but for us to take Good News, coupled with hope and healing, to a harassed and helpless humanity. The backbone of our message is not fear and terror, but freedom, hope, and healing. To miss this is to miss the Gospel. Jesus did not run about the countryside in a sandwich board, screaming “turn or burn” at every passerby. He went about “doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil” (Acts 10: 38). It was these very things that He saw the world as being in need of, and it can be assumed, therefore, that these are the works He desires for His “laborers” to carry out. The world does not need a red faced, angry preacher scolding them for their secret sins. They need a compassionate shepherd who will help to lead them out of the fog of confusion and pain that they live in constantly. Jesus saw this, and the compassion that propelled His ministry arose from His knowledge of humanity’s pain. His message was Good News, and it brought hope, healing, comfort and clarity to those who believed it.

Such a message is universal and never expires! Humanity has spoken the language of love from day one, and will never cease to understand it. Messages of fear, judgment, and a retributive god, however, are things that the world has outgrown and humanity is no longer moved by their mention. The world has wised up, and they see the flawed nature of the message we’ve peddled. We must change or become irrelevant relics of the past. It is not that we must tailor ourselves to our culture and compromise the Gospel. No, we must return to the real Gospel - to the Gospel that Jesus and the apostles preached. It may look quite different from Mr. Edwards’ terrifying tour through God’s “little shop of horrors”, but it may also actually work and set people free to live as God intended.

It’s time to recapture the true essence and heart of the Gospel, which is much more about spiritual health than it is separation and hell. The world is ready for such a message, but they, along with Jesus, have very little time for the message of an angry God who callously dangles those who would dare to defy Him over a molten pool of eternal damnation. As the old movie The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat no longer moves crowds to panic, so Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God no longer moves the world to conversion. If our message has an expiration date, it simply can’t be perfect, and if it isn’t perfect it can’t be the Gospel.

Well when you put it like that. Haha. So true. It is the same with raising a child. If you constantly put them under fear and do not connect with them on the level they are currently at, one day they will turn on you, reject you and shut you out. When our motivation is to make ourselves comfortable by controlling another thru emotional manipulation and fear, it is nothing short of tyranny and that always leads to more brokenness and disconnection.

It is good news isn't it?

~1 Corinthians 15Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)[h=3]The Good News About Jesus Christ[/h]15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want you to remember the Good News I told you. You received that Good News message, and you continue to base your life on it. [SUP]2 [/SUP]That Good News, the message you heard from me, is God’s way to save you. But you must continue believing it. If you don’t, you believed for nothing.

[SUP]3 [/SUP]I gave you the message that I received. I told you the most important truths: that Christ died for our sins, as the Scriptures say; [SUP]4 [/SUP]that he was buried and was raised to life on the third day, as the Scriptures say; [SUP]5 [/SUP]and that he appeared to Peter and then to the twelve apostles

It is not only a message of good news but a message of love....

~John 15:13King James Version (KJV)[SUP]13 [/SUP]Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus went beyond that in that while we were yet enemies He came and died for us.

This seems to be one of those times I just posted about on another thread... When we will fight tooth and nail to prove a passage says what WE THINK it says, and sometimes never even slow down long enough to see what it ACTUALLY says.

Good post Wille!..it's time to preach the true gospel of the grace of Christ to the world and to ourselves!

This quote below has so much truth in it. Instinctively we all know that the message of an angry God cannot be right. He loves us deeply and I think deep down every spirit has the knowledge of that truth.

We just need to get that to go through the filter of our minds that have been infected with the weight of life and the deceitfulness of sin that distorts our perception of our good, loving Father as shown in Jesus' life.

"The world has wised up, and they see the flawed nature of the message we’ve peddled."

'When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd'.

I like this part a lot. It says Jesus had compassion them. What exactly does compassion mean? In my estimation it is related to empathy. To have empathy for another is to see things from their eyes...and doing that is a great start to helping someone to heal. To practice empathy is to help someone chip away at they walls they have built up. I think that is what laborers for the Lord should be doing. If you start with a chisel and knock of a small chunk by being empathic towards the person, there will be a better chance that they just might be empowered to take a sledgehammer to it themselves.

Good Stuff Willie. This is the witness/gospel I hear the majority of the time where I am from,"Jesus Christ paid for the sins of the WHOLE world." and their next sentence is," Your sins are going to send you to hell!"

I too really like this sentence.....

The world has wised up, and they see the flawed nature of the message we’ve peddled.

We actually have word for word accounts of the gospel being preached by Peter and Paul in Acts. I think when we read these accounts of the true gospel being preached - we will be amazed and shocked at how much we have butchered the true gospel of the grace of Christ.

Peter's talk is in acts 10:34-48

Here was the part that people received Christ when they heard this message:

Acts 10:43-44 (NASB)
[SUP]43 [/SUP] "Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."

[SUP]44 [/SUP] While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.

Paul's word for word message was in Acts 13:16-41 ( Paul's was longer as he was talking to the Jews in a synagogue )

Here is his gospel message:

Acts 13:38 (NASB)
[SUP]38 [/SUP] "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

One well known atheist said he continually met christians who said the had good news.
His question was what was good about it?

If you have put Jesus's love to action in your heart you will know the answer.
Some appear either to be preaching assuaging guilt or getting high on praise, and love in action is not part of the story.

When I was a teenager it struck me how people found Jesus, got saved and stood still, because they had arrived.
This is often where the confusion comes in, about dragging people over this line of faith, and not learning to follow and walk in the love of Christ.

Nor........... vice versa. (And that is a trap so many fall into, truly convincing themselves this is what Jesus asked us to do.)

I mean that many people actually convince themselves that their mission is to tell people what horrible sinners they are, often before even finding out what the person's name is. And this is just the opposite of what Jesus did. Remember how He was constantly accused of being a friend of sinners by the self-righteous people who were telling those same sinners how they were going to burn?

That is because He truly WAS a friend to the sinners.

You know I am all for saving the lost but there are things to take into consideration, firstly even if we have that zeal to go out and preach the good news if we are not spiritually mature then we will only do harm not good. simply having that fire and that zeal is not enough because if one does not have the means to control that fire and zeal and use it correctly then it does no good.

Also just as everyone is different everyone has different ways of evangelizing and reaching the lost and the hurting souls. For some boldly going out and preaching the gospel even among eyes like daggers others are around the wounded and the hurting and reach them this way others still allow their actions and words to speak for them there is not any one way to do it and God can and will use anything to reach ppl even his enemies

The hardest thing for many people is being willing to INVOLVE themselves in the actual day-to-day lives of others. This truly IS hard sometimes. It honestly is so much easier to just blast out and hit 'em with a flame thrower, then move on to the next victim.

But my comment does not contradict you. You interpreted that way...of couse Jesus is a friend of sinner, my post is about: The gospel is about saving sinner`s of God's wrath. That's the gospel. it's about salvation. What salvation? From God's wrath. People who dont believe in Jesus has God's wrath on theirs heads.
