This story is all over the news. Just about everyone on FB is posting about [FONT=Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif]Harambe the gorilla and his "murder". I didn't hear about this till later in the weekend. The details still seem a bit fuzzy. So far Ive managed to ascertain that a little boy got away from his mother, got under a rail and fell off a cliff into the gorilla enclosure. The gorilla pulled the boy through the water and fearing for the childs life zoo workers put the gorilla down. Clue me in if I missed something.

So I popped in on FB and see all these memes about this "murdered" gorilla. People are outraged that the animal was killed. They blame the mother and say it was her fault and want her charged. There is a petition on Change.org signed by 100,000 people called "Justice for Harambe". Now I admit I was raised old fashioned compared to how people think today but I cannot get my mind around this. First off if you have children you know how fast they move. Take eyes off them for a moment and they're gone. I read that the mother had several children in her care. Secondly,this was an animal,not a person. You kill an animal,you murder a person. The childs life was in danger, that was the call that the zoo keepers made. So,ok, sad that a gorilla died. But people are mourning this like it was a human being. Seriously?!

We have a petition for a blasted gorilla and no one has said anything about the girl that was strangled in a Chicago bathroom by a man. I dont see anyone outraged. I didn't see it all over FB. Barely saw it on the news. No one is talking about it around the cooler at work. Why not? Is an animal more important than a child?! There is silence because transgender is a PC issue. The danger of men faking transgender and harming women and children doesn't count because its more important that a transgender isn't embarrassed when going to the restroom. Am I the only one who sees this as insanity?! That a gorilla is more important than the safety of a child. That being PC is more important than the safety of women and children.They have no problem with abortion,but dont "murder" a gorilla. Unbelievable what this country has come to. Ive been holding this in but when I saw all the "poor innocent gorilla" memes on FB today I lost it. I think I was born in the wrong generation. smh I dont understand it.[/FONT]

Unfortunately in today's Britain animals ARE more important that people - even children. Whilst I agree it was very sad that a perfectly healthy gorilla had to be put down because of an incident that was preventable...where is all the outrage over the thousands of helpless infants exterminated whilst still in the mothers womb? Where is all the outrage on what man does to his fellow man? Today it is all about animals.

In my local supermarket there are places put aside for food donations to two charities, charity #1 is a foodbank for those unable to make ends meet and charity #2 is an animal charity for the local cats and dogs home. The latter is always full and people donate to this one generously. The foodbank however is always less full. I go on facebook and there is always hatred directed at those who treat animals with cruelty but no one seems to care about what humans do to their fellow human.

The world had gone mad!

I totally agree. I've seen more posts on FB and memes over a dead lion and a gorilla than about abortion, child abuse,rape,molestation. And the majority of my friends on FB are Christians! It just makes me so angry! Ive had dogs just about all my life, I love them,but if it came between the life of a child and the dog,dog has to go. My animals are well trained toward children so Ive never faced that. But a 400 pound gorilla cannot understand the difference between protecting and hurting. Accidents happen but people are calling for charges against the mother. Its simply ridiculous.

This is a post my sister shared on FB. An eyewitness account...



My family and I decided to go to the zoo yesterday after visiting my neice at Cincinnati Childrens hospital. For those of you that have already heard, there was a terrible accident there yesterday. And since every news media has covered this story, I don't feel bad telling our side.

This was an accident! ! A terrible accident, but just that! My husband's voice is the voice talking to the child in one of the videos. I was taking a pic of the female gorilla, when my eldest son yells, "what is he doing? " I looked down, and to my surprise, there was a small child that had apparently, literally "flopped" over the railing, where there was then about 3 feet of ground that the child quickly crawled through! ! I assumed the woman next to me was the mother, getting ready to grab him until she says, "Whose kid is this? " None of us actually thought he'd go over the nearly 15 foot drop, but he was crawling so fast through the bushes before myself or husband could grab him, he went over! The crowed got a little frantic and the mother was calling for her son. Actually, just prior to him going over, but she couldn't see him crawling through the bushes! She said "He was right here! I took a pic and his hand was in my back pocket and then gone!" As she could find him nowhere, she looks to my husband (already over the railing talking to the child) and asks, "Sir, is he wearing green shorts? " My husband reluctantly had to tell her yes, when she then nearly had a break down! They are both wanting to go over into the 15 foot drop, when I forbade my husband to do so, and attempted to calm the mother by calling 911 and assure her help was on the way.

Neither my husband or the mother would have made that jump without breaking something! I wasn't leaving with my boys, because I didn't trust my husband not to jump in and the gorilla did just seem to be protective of the child. It wasn't until the gorilla became agitated because of the nosey, dramatic, helpless crowd; that the gorilla violently ran with the child! And it was very violent; although I think the gorilla was still trying to protect, we're taking a 400 lb gorilla throwing a 40 lb toddler around! It was horrific! The zoo responded very quickly, clearing the area and attempting to save both the child and the gorilla! The right choice was made. Thank God the child survived with non-life threatening, but serious injuries! This was an open exhibit! Which means the only thing separating you from the gorillas, is a 15 ish foot drop and a moat and some bushes! ! This mother was not negligent and the zoo did an awesome job handling the situation! Especially since that had never happened before! ! Thankful for the zoo and their attempts and my thoughts and prayers goes out to this boy, his mother and his family.

The story I read says that the petition is for holding the parents accountable. People are not happy with their presumed negligence, nor with the zoo for not providing a proper barrier to keep the public out.

If people are going bananas (yes, intended pun is intended) over the gorilla being shot, well... even Jack Hanna agreed with the zoos decision to do so, so their argument is invalid. :p

The eyewitness account says that the mother wasn't negligent. I dont have kids but I have two nephews. They can move,fast! One minute they are there and the next,gone. I try to keep eyes on them at all times,but I cannot,no one can.My husband and I took them to our local park that only has ducks but its close to the road. They are 8 and 10 and I still was constantly telling them to stay in sight,don't go near the road etc. Finally my husband said " sweetie they are boys, you have to let them play,calm down". To which I said "they aren't getting injured or killed on my watch!". But accidents happen and this was an accident,simple as that.

I think I would have coaxed the gorilla away from the child with a banana and then had someone rappel into the enclosure to rescue the toddler. Or, if it was okay with the parents, let the gorillas raise the child in captivity as part of a study, to study the reintroduction of a human back into society. I would then use what I learned to help introduce democrats into society.

4 years old is not a baby...the whole thing is a tragedy for the silverback...

I'm thinking the kid just doesn't listen too well and that it might have been handled better

These gorillas, in spite of their enormous size & strength, are not mean spirited

I guess that better fencing will be provided although the zoo stated that nothing has happened in 36 years...

things can change in a instant

I agree what ever happened to holding a child's hand when around something that could be a danger like near a fence to a giant silver back. If I had a child 4 years old, and we're spending a day at the zoo and close to any fence to a wild animal yea no doubt I would be holding on to the child's hand.

Really if she did have several children in her care what on earth was she doing close to this barrier with all those kids that's not making any sense to me surely a person can't watch them all at once.

Do any kids listen well? Especially boys? The childs life was saved,thats all that matters.

I believe she took a picture. The child was holding on to her one moment and gone the next. Thats just how fast they can be. Ask any mom.

i do agree but why bring little children that close to the barrier that's seems a little ill responsible.

Well this story has more turns than a traffic rotary! First people were tweeting about white privilege and how a poor gorilla was shot to save a white kid. Well the parents are "gasp" black. So now the story is this...
