It was an awesome idea and it should be given more understanding. Hearing people tend to be in the dark on it and make snap judgments at times.
 
I'm not exactly sure how that would work.


If the purpose of the room was to communicate to each other using sign language, then the users would have to be able to see each other.

So then, what about the users without a cam, or who don't want to be on cam?

Good idea, but I'm not sure it's a viable option.

It also sounds alarms in my head...as making people very vulnerable.
 
as has been said, I can't see the difference between a dead person reading text and a hearing person reading text....

but I'd love to learn sign language

and as cam is already used in the main room, what makes it worse to use here? I guess the difficult bit would be distributing time on the cam, unless it is possible to make several appear at the same time

Because you're providing for one group to use their primary method of communication, but requiring another to just "deal with it and type". That, by definition, is not fair.

ASL doesn't magically take more time than someone speaking with their voice either. Time would not be an issue. I'm sure the camera could be used, but not if people were constantly complaining out of a misunderstood discrimination.

I'm not saying it would take longer... I have seen sign language "spoken" many times
but if it is meant to be education as well as communication it need to enable people to sign simulationuslu, or at least that would make it a lot easier

and I stand by what I said. My primary communication is talking, it don't make tyoing harder. I reckon deaf as 100% equal to the hearing, and I know what it is like being made "handicapped" without being, that was why I said I can't see the difference :)
 
I don't think simultaneous use would be neccesary. At least insofar as deaf and hearing impaired users communicating together.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's a Spanish chat isn't there?
 
You can read the written text, but you can't 'hear' the tone of voice and inflection of certain words that alter the meaning of what the other person was trying to say.

Why make an exception for a non-english language and not an exception for people raised in understanding english, but who cannot speak it?

As much as I hate to use the term "disability", it's making an exception for another common language, but not making one for those with a "disability".
 
I'm not saying there shouldn't be a room I just said deaf people can read written text just like anyone else who can read

as for the spanish room, I guess more people speak spanish than sign language, there are MANY languages represented on this site :)
 
So people who aren't born hearing just need to suck it up and type like the rest of the hearing people? Make-do in a hearing world and call it good? There's not that many so it's not a big deal?

I mean by that argument we should just not waste concrete or wood on making wheelchair ramps.

This is the frustrating part of dealing with people who are never around anyone different.
 
why are you so aggressive? all I', saying it its not more difficult for deaf to communicate than the hearing , especially online

I have said three times now I WANT the room, so don't attack me

and I have been around deaf people and even gone out on cafes with them, being the only one NOT understanding sign language, so be careful accusing people
 
Aggressive though that might have been, I'm not attacking you. I'm a nurse and I get very passionate about such subjects, I apologize if I upset you.

Yes, typing is an option, but when accomodations are made for the hearing to use voice and video chat then I don't see why they cannot be made for the deaf and hearing impaired.
 
that's a good point. and I'd love to learn some more ASl. I'd probably just end up confused though :p
 
It's actually really easy. The biggest thing you need to remember is that it is not signed english. That's a big mistake a lot of hearing people make. =)
 
I know that, I know a tiiiny bit of it, and a even tinyer bit NSL

I know some theory, but not rue if I'd be able to use it :p it's confusing to say wall - hat - hanging - there :p (at least now, before I'm sued to it)
and I am horrible at showing facial expressions :S
