'Perfect' is a very imprecise English translation. Look into the original Aramaic/Koine Greek to see what the original meaning was.
Or you could tell us.

Okay. I'm a Christian. So I know my identity, my purpose, my authority, what lies beyond this life. I know a book that is 100% truth. A book that details all of history within a spiritual paradigm. I know a book inspired by a never-changing God, a book that despite being thousands of years old (depending on the books) is fully authoritative and still highly relevant to life today. On top of all of that, I exist within a community of believers who love, encourage, challenge and support each other (when they're at their best). And best of all, I now have an eternal relationship with my Lord and Saviour and the Creator of all. That is what I have as a Christian.

As an atheist, what do you have?
Maybe a couple of cookies.

Even that's dubious. The Empire will say anything to get new recruits. ;)

I mean, you can Google it for yourself. But I'll tell you this much. You can go as deep or as surface level as you'd like with the word.

'In Matthew 5:48, the word “perfect” is teleios, and the Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words defines it as “signifies having reached its end (telos), finished, complete, perfect.” For its use in this verse: “complete, conveying the idea of goodness without necessary reference to maturity…”'

In the context of this passage, "you are to be perfect", you're to love as God loves - unconditionally and without favouritism. It's a summary of the New Covenant.

Actually, it is possible to be perfect, AFTER one has become born again. Jesus said, "Be ye perfect, for I am perfect." I highly doubt he would have told us to do something that was impossible. However, most of us don't manage to follow those instructions very well, so it's pretty safe to say that none of us are perfect here.

Please don't take offense on a personal level. But I have an entirely different take on this.

Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

I don't really think Christ was saying "Hey, Its totally possible to be perfect! Do that daily". I think He was giving us something to strive for. A goal. A mission. Like, When I sit down to take a test. I KNOW I'm not getting 100%. I know my study habits (lol) and personal capability and I know it isn't going to happen. But I give it what I've got anyways and I get the best I'm humanly capable. In the same way if we look at God as our 100% and shoot for HIS level of perfection we are going to come a whole lot closer to attaining it than if we looked at our friends, family, or even pastors. Humans aren't capable of perfection...our nature is flawed and fallen.

Right! I couldn't think of anything positive about atheism, so I just threw in some cookies to 'balance' things out a little more. ;)

Don't worry, bro, I'm Queen of not taking things personally :p

There's nothing wrong with that view. I don't think by perfect he meant that we aught to know every answer to every possible question, or be able to win every chess game, etc, but a matter of holiness. And that said, Jesus said that wig God, all things are possible. So yes, I do think that it was motivational speaking, but I also think he was letting us know what he expects. I don't feel like he was using a simile or a metaphor, I think he was being literal. But then that's just me. And I may not have done a good job of explaining myself, so if that is the case, sorry. :D

And auto correct is killing me today!

The whole sinless perfection understanding decimates the Gospel's very paradigm. If we could achieve perfection in this life, we wouldn't need Jesus.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I'm guessing you're asking how I justify my belief in whatever happens after you die.

For reference, like most (but not all) atheists I don't think anything happens after you die. You just die, and that's the end of it.

The main source I look at to arrive at the above conclusion is that we just don't have any hard evidence of anything special happening after death.

And yeah, that's pretty much it.

What about you?

Well, I came across the realization that my beliefs weren't based on any real logic or evidence. So I stopped believing. Not much more to say than that.

P.S.
I just saw something that made me very angry so if my replies do seem rude it's mostly because outside problems are getting on my nerves.
Just a heads up
