In my experience, AR15's are absolutely NOT picky. Put just about any ammo in them and they go bang every time you pull the trigger... almost monotonously.
And even the cheap ones can be surprisingly accurate. My stock DPMS Oracle (entry level AR from DPMS) shot 1" groups at 100yds with the FIRST handload I tried in it. I didn't have to tweak it at all. I PLAN to tweak it for best velocity/accuracy, but it's pretty dang accurate as is.
I don't know about the AR10's... I've never had, or shot one. I figured they would be about the same. ? I'll have to googly it to see what the big boys on the gunboards are saying.
Several months ago I saw DPMS AR10's on sale at a gunshow for around $700.. If I could have figured out ANY way to swing it, I'd have taken one home with me then. .308 is SO much more impressive than .223...
But, it's more expensive to shoot, and heavier to carry, as well.... that's what slings are for, I suppose.
