In my experience, AR15's are absolutely NOT picky. Put just about any ammo in them and they go bang every time you pull the trigger... almost monotonously.

And even the cheap ones can be surprisingly accurate. My stock DPMS Oracle (entry level AR from DPMS) shot 1" groups at 100yds with the FIRST handload I tried in it. I didn't have to tweak it at all. I PLAN to tweak it for best velocity/accuracy, but it's pretty dang accurate as is.

I don't know about the AR10's... I've never had, or shot one. I figured they would be about the same. ? I'll have to googly it to see what the big boys on the gunboards are saying.

Several months ago I saw DPMS AR10's on sale at a gunshow for around $700.. If I could have figured out ANY way to swing it, I'd have taken one home with me then. .308 is SO much more impressive than .223...

But, it's more expensive to shoot, and heavier to carry, as well.... that's what slings are for, I suppose.

Not any more picky than any other firearm. With ARs, I have found that the biggest issues to them running reliably are the chamber not being kept clean, and running the action too wet. Oh, and making sure that the entire rifle including all parts are built to meet or exceed MIL-SPEC. Honestly, I think 99% of the complaints people make about any kind of firearm can be traced back to the idiot pulling the trigger. Any rifle will crap out if it isn't cared for right or cleaned regularly. It will also be junk if a person buys a junk weapon or builds one out of junk parts.

My AR is not fancy by any means. I put it together here at home, and it just works. I don't do anything special except keep it clean and the bolt carrier group lightly oiled. I shoot cheap 5.56 bulk ammo, and it's never failed me once.

I had an okay answer but yeah, what hornetguy said is spot on. His rifle also rocks.

A decent AR is about as reliable as a gun can be. Unless that gun is a decent AK. But I don't like AK's :p

Yeah, that's my only qualm with a mag full of .308. If I'm doing a run and gun kind of course, it's heavy. That and the 5.56 is combat efficient as long as you get the right load.

If I had to make a switch in caliber on my AR, I think I'd go .300 Blackout. Might do that post-shotgun purchase.

Out of curiosity, why the Blackout instead of the 7.62X39? Are you thinking of going suppressed?

Today I finally found time to go a few rounds with my Sako 308:) Nice rifle, but the barrel is a bit on the heavy side.

Seems like they've come a long way. I remember going to the range in 2010 with buddies and seeing jams left and right.

When I got back into it three years later, I may have seen a couple stovepipes. That's about it.

I really like Sako's.... I used to call them "say-koes".... but I had a gun guy sniff and say... It's pronounced "Sah-koe"....

Hmmm...ok then..

Like Leuopold... pronounced "loo-pold"

or Lapua..... "lop-wah"

I'm sure there's more...

It is Finnish so I reckon the latter would be the correct way of pronouncing it:)

Wow. They're like LOTR nerds. I've come to the conclusion that there is no way I can pronounce everything right.

There are snobs in every hobby. I get a lot of enjoyment from them and their posturing. The guy next to me at the range shooting 5 inch groups at 100 yard with his $5000 Remington 700 custom rig geting completely PWNED by me with my $800 AR15 rig. It is most satisfying. Probably not the most Christian thing to do to get such joy out of someone else's indignation, but I've never claimed to be a very good Christian anyhow.

Ohhhh it's satisfying. The other day I out-shot this dude with a fancy schmancy HK with my G19. Glorious.

I almost feel like challenging that elderly woman who handed my but to me with her G43.

On second thought...

I know there are some folks who build rifles just to show people how much money they can drop on something, and the thing ends up being as useful as a club because they can't shoot it good enough to get any use out of it.
