i saw this quotation from douglas adams' science fiction comedy book 'so long and thanks for all the fish' posted on a blog today...

this excerpt has ford prefect explaining to his friend arthur dent about the politics of an alien society...

"On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in."

this was supposed to be satire...but in america in 2016 it's reality...that 'lesser of two evils' argument people here keep making is cartoonishly absurd...

It's been the state of affairs going back far longer than the current election. And, you propose the problem which is 'lesser than two evils' but you have to agree that a "write-in" vote is not the solution. Sure, you make a statement with the write-in but nothing gets fixed.

I think it is the solution. People need to vote according to principle, not polls.

write-in votes get no one elected. So, one week after the election and the media reports the write-ins, there will never be mention of them for 4 more years.

And voting for the same socialist policies that we've had since the early 20th century, in the name of winning isn't helping either.

It's as cartoonishly absurd insofar as you see the stakes.

The lesser of two evils arguments makes perfect sense if your choice is between Communism and the rule of the Tsar. Especially if you're a kulak.

Douglas Adams was always witty, occasionally profound, and often quite flippant. I wouldn't change him at all, though.

Ah, you see that's an ideological question with an easy answer. :p

I'm not asking anyone to make direct historical analogues. I simply wish to show it's possible to weigh the merits of two imperfect and oft times immoral alternatives to decide which would at least leave room for others to practice good.

We Americans have rarely had this quandary in our history. Which is partially what makes this decision so difficult.

Behold the wages of a once Christian nation under judgment.

I don't believe that the candidates, be it him or her, will be significantly better than the other when it comes to leaving room for others to practice good. They already run mudslinging campaigns which is telling me alot about said candidates. This is, the way I see it, not a choice between tsar or communism, but between two snakes in high grass.

Whenever somebody is saying "lesser of two evils" what they really mean is "I love that alternative but no way I'm gonna admit it":p.
