The Holy Spirit was sent to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgement (John 16: 8-11); IMO this is the first level of faith and is usually called mental assent. There is little if any personal involvement as it is primarily a mental affirmation. However those who are convinced at this level are pointed to Jesus the righteous One as he is the only One who can die for our sin, redeeming us. These are drawn to Him by the truth and the love and the hope revealed in the gospel (John 6: 44; 12: 32) Those who wish to come after Him discover that there are three requirements of discipleship: deny self, take up his cross (die to the old self) and follow Him (observe all things He has commanded) (Matt 16: 24)

When we deny self we empty or humble ourselves. (Phil. 2: 5- 8) God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud. He opens the heart (Acts 16: 14) to receive Jesus as the Christ the Son of God by believing in His name (John 1: 12, 13) and to respond in faith hope and love, love being the greatest. This is the second level of faith. Faith is a work of God (John 6: 29), by the grace of God (Acts 18: 27) and received as a gift (Rom. 12: 3). To say that we receive this faith by the exercising of our minds in choosing to believe is beyond the pale. The individual is begotten by God, given the right become a child of God and the word is implanted his heart. The individual believes with all his heart and mind that God is and that he is the rewarder of those who seek Him and that Jesus is the anointed One, the Son of God. This faith at this level is still incomplete, however, as shown by the fact that he is not yet a child of God.

The second requirement of discipleship is to take up our cross (that is to die to the old self). When Jesus took up His cross it was to die. This is accomplished when our faith works with our works of faith and there by perfects or completes our faith. (James 2: 20-24) You see that faith without works of faith is dead. These works of faith that lead to salvation (precede salvation) are calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 2: 21) confessing his name before (Rom. 10: 10) , repentance in the name of Christ (2 Cor. 7: 10) and baptism in the name of Christ (Mark 16: 16). To suggest that these works are works of righteousness, IMO, is beyond the pale. When we obey these commands, are faith is complete (this is the third level of faith, are hearts and conscience are sprinkled with the blood of Christ (1 Peter 1: 2) as our bodies are washed with pure water (Heb. 10: 22).

All spiritual blessings , including redemption, justification, sonship, life and salvation are in Christ and we are baptized into Christ and His death, we die to the old self and are clothed with Christ. At the same time we become children of God through faith and baptism into Christ. (Rom 6: 3-7: Gal. 3: 26, 27) and Jesus pours out the gift of the Holy Spirit abundantly, immersing, baptizing and anointing us with the Spirit.

IMO. as we come forth from this baptismal experience, we are born of water and Spirit. (John 3: 5) The Spirit regenerates and renews, guides and indwells. To be immersed in the Spirit means that we are totally exposed to the work and influence of the Spirit in the outward man; to drink of the Spirit means that the inward man, the heart and conscience, is similarly influenced. (1 Cor. 12: 13) He gives us a new heart and Spirit.

The third requirement of discipleship is to follow Him; to do all things that he has commanded. We do this not merely from a sense of duty but because we want to please Him in every aspect of our life. If the above is true, conversion is certainly not a one-step operation; we are obliged and desire to walk in the light as He is in the light as the blood of Christ continues to cleanse us from sin.
God bless.

one baptism.

the baptism of God. (Holy Spirit)

or the baptism of man (water)

Take your pick.

Me, I was baptized by God the moment i was saved, and that is the only one that matters, I followed up by allowing my pastor to baptize me in water, and I suggest we all do the same, But please do noot atribute the one done by God to the one done by man and make them equal. That is blasphemy.

It's painfully obvious that plain talk is not interested in the truth, but is only interested in accommodating his biased church doctrine as he continues to "parrot off" what his predecessors before him have taught. He desperately needs to repent and believe the gospel.

Response:
Thank you for your response. Jesus, Himself. Was baptized with water by John the Baptist. Was it from heaven or from men? (Luke 20: 3-8; 7: 29, 30)) Jesus said He had received all authority in heaven and in earth and he authorized His apostles to make disciples of all the nations by baptizing then in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all things He had commanded. (Matt: 28: 18- 20) Would that baptism in the name of Christ be from heaven or from men? Are you saying that the baptism in water in the name of Christ does not matter? In the first century they died to self when they were baptized into Christ and His death. Would you please give a scriptural reference for your conversion experience.

Cornelius and his household were baptized with the Holy Spirit but then Peter asked if anyone could refuse water to prevent their baptism. Then he ordered then to be baptized in the name of Christ. When they obeyed their faith was authenticated (Gen. 22: 12, 15- 18) and perfected or completed. (James 2: 20- 24)

In the first century everyone who received the word was baptized and was added to the number of those being saved.. (Acts 2: 41, 47)

Jesus said, “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved.” (Mark 16: 16)

Jesus told Nicodemus that we all must be born of both water and Spirit. (John 3: 5) In my mind that makes both necessary. The one complements the other and together they are the one baptism.
God bless.

Our baptism is the same. (to reveal who we are. or to give us a chance to tell the world what we did) It will not save us any more than it saved Jesus.

You better chose the baptism of God. replacing it with water is blasphemy.

Jesus was already the SON of God by birth.....

The reference to water and spirit in John 3 is in reference to flesh and spirit (contradiction)

It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that BELIEVE...no reference to water

Baptism is a WORK of righteousness.....works do not save, keep saved and or facilitate salvation

Paul said...I THANK GOD I BAPTIZED none of you and HE WAS NOT SENT to BAPTIZE <--if necessary why say this

the Thief on the cross was not immersed neither was John the Baptist who is called the greatest in the kingdom (other than JESUS)

Immersion is a picture, an identifier, a public statement of faith...it has nothing to do with being saved, but states to the world you have died with Christ, been buried with Christ and are resurrected with Christ.....

Gonna be a lot of people wake up in a liquid deprived place with hotter than normal temps because they trusted into the water....

Water baptism cannot save anyone, you go down a dry sinner and come up a wet sinner, for he who says he is without sin, is a liar, for it is spiritual baptism that saves, not water baptism.

What does Paul mean by "one baptism" or what is Paul's point in saying "one baptism"?

What does "one" mean?

What does "baptism" mean?
It means that just as there is only one Faith, there is only one baptism- just as there is only one Lord. You see, when false churches branch off of the real church that Christ established- their doctrines, baptisms (such as baptizing babies, or sprinkling) and other practices, are false (not what Christ established).

There is only one true Lord (not Mohammad, the pope, Krishna, or others who cannot lay down their own life AND pick it back up again).

There is only one Faith (belief/practice/church). The Bible says some will abandon "The Faith" and follow deceiving spirits. These people did not abandon faith in God- just the way they worship God (false doctrine instead of God's doctrine). God says, "They worship Me IN VAIN- their doctrines are merely human rules."

And there is only one baptism- we die to our sins like Christ died on the cross, we fully bury our old sinful self in the watery grave of baptism- just as Christ was fully in the grave, and we are raised a new creature alive with the Holy Spirit- just as Christ was raised to newness of life. This baptism is obeying the Gospel of Christ- the gospel being the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Bible says God will take vengeance on those who (1) know not God, and (2) obey not the gospel of His Son. We MUST obey the death, burial, and resurrection by being baptized INTO Christ (Romans 6). There is no other baptism.

Amen brother!

Even though there are baptism(s) plural, in Matthew 3:11 we read - I baptize you with 1. water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the 2. Holy Spirit and 3. fire. In Luke 12:50, Jesus said - "But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!" Of course Jesus was not distressed about water baptism, but being baptized or "immersed" into suffering, namely His sacrificial death on the cross.

*There is only ONE baptism that places us into the body of Christ and that is SPIRIT baptism, not water baptism.

Ephesians 4:5 - one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

1 Corinthians 12:13 - For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

Unfortunately, plaintalk has been thoroughly indoctrinated into Campbellism and sadly, his whole purpose on CC is to pervert the gospel of Christ (which is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who BELIEVES.. - Romans 1:16) and teach salvation by "water and works." :(

First you are not Jesus the virgin born Son of God. In any reasonable respect there is no comparison to the obvious differences between you and Jesus Christ.

Titus 3:5 is the verse you need to see that Holy Spirit baptism is the washing of regeneration that save us.
Water baptism after conversion by belief. Salvation by grace through faith not by works.
In the first century everyone who received the word was baptized and was added to the number of those being saved.. (Acts 2: 41, 47)
Saved and baptized by the Holy Spirit unto eternal life.
Jesus said, “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved.” (Mark 16: 16)
Again Holy Spirit baptism not water baptism.
Jesus told Nicodemus that we all must be born of both water and Spirit. (John 3: 5) In my mind that makes both necessary. The one complements the other and together they are the one baptism.
God bless.
Certainly does but Nicodemus knew the water was natural birth and Spirit was rebirth by the power of God. Context is important to avoid confusion and error.

Response:
Roger, every night, I pray the sinners prayer: “God be merciful to me, the sinner.” I am painfully and sorrowfully aware of how much I miss the mark. This one doesn’t think for a minute that he is Jesus Christ. I am thankful to this forum for the opportunity to discuss the Bible with others as I am deaf and cannot communicate.

He saved us not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our savior. (Titus 3: 5, 6) NASB

What is the washing of regeneration? When does it take place? IMO the washing of regeneration is the washing that takes at regeneration. Albert Barnes tells us that the word, loutron, occurs here and in Eph. 5: 26, where in both places it is rendered washing, and refers to baptism. Acts 22: 16 tells us that Paul washed away or was cleansed of his sin at baptism. When we obey Jesus by repentance and baptism in the name of Christ for the forgiveness of sin (1 Peter 1: 2), we are sprinkled with the blood of Christ, cleansing us, and the Holy Spirit is poured out upon us for regeneration and renewal. (Acts 2: 38, 39) Titus 3: 5 states that we are saved by this washing as it is the outer sign required by God to sprinkle us with the blood of Christ. Peter confirms that baptism does save us in this way (1 Peter 3: 21) IMO baptism is not a work of righteousness; it is a work of faith, (Acts 8: 36- 38; 1 Thess. 1: 3) and is therefore quite compatible with salvation by grace through faith.
God bless.

Was baptism to save?

Some claim that baptism in the name of Christ is disassociated from forgiveness of sin in Acts 2: 38 in light of the shift from second person pleural to third person singular back to second person pleural again. If so the passage would read, “Repent, for the forgiveness of your sins, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Christ…..”

IMO the exact opposite is true, the Holy Spirit was emphasizing the necessity of being baptized in light of the earlier statement, “And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2: 21) A few days earlier Jesus said, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. And He also said, Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matt. 28: 18-20) Friends, they called on the name of the Lord when they repented in His name and were baptized in His name. Were they saved? Most assuredly! (Acts 2: 41, 47) If they did anything else in His name, it is not recorded.

Are there other passages that confirm this line of thinking? Yes, Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. (Acts 22: 16) Baptism is an appeal to God for a good conscience (forgiveness of sin), Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 3: 21) And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4: 12) All spiritual blessings, including redemption, the forgiveness of sin, and salvation, are in Christ (Eph. 1: 3); and we are baptized into Christ (Rom. 6: 3).
God bless.

Thanks for the question. The word 'baptize' means 'to wash'. It is referring to the fact that, in Christ, a person has their sins washed away as soon as they come to believe on the Lord unto salvation, so they are clean in that sense. Of course, this is a spiritual condition and physical water baptisms were just pictures of that and did not really cleanse from sin because of physical water. Any cleansing from sin must be because Christ has given a person the forgiveness necessary. That forgiveness will always be accompanied by the person believing on him unto salvation, and believing on him unto salvation is possible because he gives them the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, they would not have believed. Further, the fire being spoken of is meaning the judgment that Christ endured on the cross to make someone washed free of their sin. In the Old Testament, for example, the fire consuming the animal on the altar was a picture of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Anyway, the one baptism being spoken of in your op question is the one cleansing (being forgiven one's sins) that is available to anyone who becomes saved. The Bible says: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved". This does not mean whoever believes and is dunked in physical water will be saved. Rather, this means whoever believes and has their sins washed away (forgiven) by Christ's sacrifice on the cross will be saved. This verse further shows how the two things occur simultaneously. When one believes on the Lord unto salvation, they receive at the same time forgiveness of sins. This is possible when God initiates the salvation of someone by his own action.

When by faith we obey our Lord by repenting and being baptized in the name of Christ, we are sprinkled with the blood of Christ which cleanses of from sin. (1 Peter 1: 2) IMO baptism is a part of that process. God bless.

The Scriptures tell us that we are baptized into Christ. (Rom. 6: 3; Gal. 3: 26, 27)
The Scriptures tell us that our sins are washed away when we by faith obey our Lord. (1 Peter 1: 2; Heb. 10: 22)
The Scriptures tell us that we receive the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit by faith (John 7: 39), by obedience of faith (Acts 5: 32), when we repent and are baptized in the name of Christ. (Acts 2: 38, 39)
In Mark 16: 16, salvation follows belief and baptism in the name of Christ, just as one is made a disciple by baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all things commanded. Matt. 28: 18-20)
The Holy Spirit was sent to convict the world, not just the elect, of sin, righteousness and judgement. (John 16: 8- 11)
God bless.

Acts 8:Ac 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Water follows Holy Spirit baptism. Water baptism is part of the process of sanctification which proceeds out of salvation.

When Peter was speaking to Cornelius an his household, the Holy Spirit "fell" upon those listening (Acts 10: 44); the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed because "the gift of the Holy Spirit" had been poured out upon the Gentiles also (v. 45); in Acts 11: 15, 16 this "falling" and outpouring of the "gift of the Holy Spirit" is identified as the "baptism with the Holy Spirit." IMO this shows us that we are "baptized with the Holy Spirit" when we receive the "gift of the Holy Spirit." Cornelius was an exceptional case, used by God to show that the Gentiles were acceptable to Him. There is no other record of others receiving the Spirit when they believed.

The rule for all other believers is laid down in Acts 2: 38, 39. It is for the Jews and there children, for those who are far off (the Gentiles), for as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself. That is, it is for every one, including those of us who are alive today. The "gift of the Holy Spirit" and therefore the baptism with the Holy Spirit, is promised to those who repent and are baptized in water, in the name of Christ, for the forgiveness of sin. If that is true, then the reception and baptism with the Holy Spirit follows baptism in the name of Christ. The Spirit is poured out richly and abundantly, immersing us with the Spirit. (Titus 3: 5, 6); we receive the Spirit when, by faith, we obey our Lord. (Acts 5: 32)
God bless.
