I was not trying to condemn anyone. It's just my opinion that sometimes I lost trust in some doctors because there are good and bad doctors who could make your sickness worse or cure one sickness but resulted to another problem which is worse than your previous sickness. Yes I have been very sick and was cured by taking meds for a long time and the side effects are real. I also know people who did not undergo chemo but lived for 20 years and no recurrence. In some cases chemo just extend life, delays the inevitable but does not cure. I also know someone who was advised to undergo dialysis but she did not and she is still alive today. I remember depleted said one time she was cured of her gall stones but it resulted to her back problem. I know someone who had an eye operation for cataracts. Instead of being well, she became blind because of medical mal practice. Who knows those people who are mentally ill became worse because of meds when they could actually just had a simple depression? I know someone who took meds for her depression but she stopped because she felt she is getting worse. She got better in time without the meds. There are things that doctors don't tell us. It's a conspiracy between them and pharmaceutical companies. I know we live or die for the Lord and our life is in His hands. We could be healed by synthetic meds and it is not purely evil but I know that satan's influence has proliferated in the medical world.
You are taking isolated examples and making them into the rule. Plus, you do not understand the scientific process. Basically, once a drug has animal tested as having some good qualities, and it is shown to be relatively safe, a huge number of double blind studies all over the western world start. There are two groups in each location study, a placebo group who appear to get the drug but don't. It is the control group. The other group actually gets the drug, and they report on all the side effects, and the efficacy of the drug! The internet never gives out all the side effects, but the doctor "bibles" do. I have one of these books, out of date a bit, I admit. I was able to eliminate certain drugs that were stressing my liver, so I could stay on an essential drug for my RA treatment.
Not everyone gets every side effect, and the drug that I took myself off was a simple antihistamine which was raising my liver enzymes. The allergist that put me on it, never base line tested my liver, and never tested it when I was on it, and told me to stay on it the rest of my life. So yes, medical malpractice, but I am clever, I figured it out. He also got me on allergy shots, which helped my very severe asthma. I used to be in the hospital daily for asthma treatment. The trouble is, those shots probably triggered my Rheumatoid Arthritis. They now know that people who have other autoimmune diseases in their families should not get allergy shots. Too bad for me they didn't know that nearly 25 years ago.
I often ask myself which I would prefer. Deadly asthma or crippling RA? I've never been able to answer, looking back and remembering how bad my asthma was. Well, it is what it is!
As for my friend who died of breast cancer, she was Filipino too! Same attitude as you, so it must be something she learned when she was growing up there. Not trying to generalize, but she brought a lot of people to the Lord who were Filipino friends and family. That was good! Then she started a Word Faith church, got the whole church praying when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, laying on of hands, and she died because she refused medical treatment. Destroyed the faith of a lot of people that way. New Christians and all! Very sad!
I have many friends who have terminal cancer, on chemo who keep on going! My cousin's wife got breast cancer, did the traditional chemo, went to Mexico for alternate treatments, had to go back on more and more chemo. She lasted 11 years, enough time to see her children married, but not to watch her children grow up. She was sad, my cousin is still recovering.
As for cataracts, that is seriously not an illness. It is a degenerative condition which most people get by the time they are old. I have them, probably started as a side effect of prednisone I was constantly on for my severe asthma. Because they have stopped growing, more or less. I'm awaiting surgery in the future and not worrying about it at all. My mom had it done in her 70's and it was the best thing she said that ever happened to her. Mainly because she could see the ball to golf. My dad had it done after his heart went downhill, and it was one of the worst things that could have happened to him, as he was to be immobile for some reason. Same doctor, same operation, two different results. There are no guarantees with modern medicine, I agree.
I will also say, that I am going to stay on chemo drugs, even if it kills me. Because my life is not worth living with the utterly destructive pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The idea is to find a doctor you trust, and then let him treat you. But do your research, and know the side effects, the bad and good outcomes. Two years ago I went on a biologic called "Xeljanz" This med could not be licensed in Europe, because 3 people died in the clinical trials. I knew this, and I tried it anyway. Not only did it not kill me, it did not work! So onto something new!
Finally, a lot of my scepticism concerning herbal and alternate cures come from the following reasons. One, none of these are tested rigorously. They are all based on the testimonials of one or two people.
However, getting back to Placebos, the Placebo is a big thing! That includes thinking you are healed by some alternate treatment, or even that God has healed you. (I'm not saying he doesn't heal, just that many people think they are healed, when actual testing would show they were not!)
Back in the 1990's Remicade, the first biologic was being tested around the world for stopping RA. When I was in Edmonton, I went to hear the head of the Rheumatology Dept. talk about that clinical trial. They gave half the group the Remicade, and half the group a placebo. (Not the drugs!) As an added control, they xrayed the hands and feet of all the people in both groups.
After a year, they surveyed both groups. 52% of the people in the placebo group said they had greatly improved. That means 52% of the people honestly believed it was helping, when they hadn't received the drug. Well and good, you say? Not so much. They did the X-rays of the hands and feet of everyone in both groups, again. The people in the Remicade group had much less deterioration of the joints than expected. The people in the placebo group had much WORSE deterioration of the joints, including the 52% who thought they were better and on the drug.
The ethics committee got involved, and they cancelled the double blind study. (This means neither the doctors, nurses and medical people, nor the patients knew who was getting the placebo and who was getting the drug!) It stuns me every time I think of it, to realize that these people had the same serious and painful disease that I have, and they thought they were better. What greater delusion than that?
Applied to God healing, I don't doubt God can heal. What I doubt are the many healing stories, without medical proof. And modern medicine has saved my life more times than you could imagine. I got my first pneumonia as a baby, had antibiotics which were new, and survived. Unlike an aunt on each side of the family who died of childhood pneumonia. I also would have died in childbirth 3 times, only one birth not needing intervention of the four. Oh, and that was a miracle! I had the whole church praying, there were visions of angels over my other children, and the nurses said that my labour room was so different, like angels were there. He was the biggest baby 9 lb 9 oz, and yet he just slide through. The doctor on call said it was a miracle. Because my doctor, also the town anesthesiologist, was out of town along with the ob-gyn. So praise God for that divine intervention. And all the times as an adult I had pneumonia and antibiotics pulled me through.
But, I praise God for doctors and medicine that have kept me alive, too! As for demonic influence in medicine, I have never seen it in my life! My son-in-law and daughter-in-law are both doctors. I had some good friends growing up who are doctors nearing the end of their careers. They are all the most honest and ethical people I know. My DIL wouldn't even give me a prescription for Valtrex, for a cold sore, because she wasn't allowed to treat family members. So I had to go into a walk in clinic wait 2 hours to get it. I am sure there are bad doctors, just as there are bad people in every profession, including pastors! But, for the main I am convinced that doctors and scientific researchers are not just in it for the money, but because they truly care. By the way, my uncle was a top level chemist in a medical research facility, and he wasn't even allowed to tell his wife what went on. When he got cancer in his arm, it was shown it was because of exposure to the chemicals he was working on to get cures for various diseases. Sad, he was there trying to help people, and paid the price.
PS Depression is not simple! It is a serious mental illness, in that if it is not treated properly, people kill themselves. I heard the woman who founded the semi-colon movement just killed herself at age 32. There are a lot of things people can do to help themselves with depression, but not all of those things work for everyone. I've been living with a seriously depressed person for 36 years. He takes two AD's and is mostly good. But we went through a LOT of hard times when he refused to take meds. Why? Because he thought he wasn't a good Christian if he took the anti-depressants! Too much nonsense the Word Faith people fed him, too. The depression interfered with doing his job, too. When he finally got on a full dose of an AD, he was stunned how much easier his job is. I give him lots of vitamins and minerals, which have helped a touch, but he still needs those ADs. And I do love him, just the way he is!
