While I am familiar Thomas Paine's teachings on the two distinctive classes of thought, yet I had heard a preacher talking about how God spoke to him through that 'inner voice' that he speaks to him. So is the 'inner voice' a manifestation of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit?

Anyone here hear God speak to them by the 'inner voice'?

There are many voices, but if we are saved we hear his voice and know his voice and follow him..... he is the voice of truth.

Luke 12

11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The inner voice can be a thought that you have never thought before, and definitely lines up with scripture.

The inner voice can be a discernment of just "knowing".

The inner voice can be wisdom that immediately comes.

The inner voice can be a word of guidance that has faith, not fear, behind it.

The inner voice can be a strong sense of knowing you are loved unconditionally.

The inner voice has love behind it.

The inner voice comes with the fruits of the Spirit - peace, joy, etc.

God says, "I give my thoughts to all generations".... and I believe that we all, as Christians, are given his voice many times, but do not always recognize it as such.

Matthew 11:

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

History has taught me that my inner voice can be just me. Because of that, I look for verification in the Bible to see if maybe it's not just me. And verification isn't one or two verses. It has to fit into the all of it.

I believe that the inner voice is indeed a manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Indwelling in the case of a believer or external when:

Jn 16:8-11
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Luke 4:18-19
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

1 John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Acts 13.1-2

Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. [SUP]2 [/SUP]While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” [SUP]3 [/SUP]Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So your opinion is that people that believe in an inner voice are schizophrenic?

In another forum with the topic of whether God speaks to man, they question if believing that God had ever spoken to man wasn't a sign of a more serious mental disorder than hearing and audible voice. But it does seem odd that if one would say that they believed they were saved by faith and their faith came by hearing the word of God would say that anyone who has heard the voice of the LORD is mentally defective.

The Voice of the Lord that one hears within is not in our heads. It is in our "middle". Don't ask me to explain how, I just know it is. And there's no doubt it is God.

We may get impressions and are led that way. I often will get a partial scripture then look to see what the Lord is saying. And He can speak into our minds, but there is where one must test.

These are the ways He speaks to me. He speaks to us all for we are His.

In my mind not so much at least not very often. There is a difference between our voice and his and some people are not very discerning and confuse their voice with God's which is often how false prophets operate.

His voice when it is in my mind is different from mine, I often times will be talking to him about something or thinking about something in general and a voice suddenly just intrudes my thoughts telling me something I have no control over when it happens or what is said but it's completely different than my inner voice not just by the voice itself but the things that are said. I remember how one time I was feeling down and was beating myself up inside as I tend to do far to often and I was thinking to myself what if I am just to far gone? what if my sins are just to deep and what if I am just not good enough and in the middle of this thought process a voice intruded inside my head saying in a profound voice You are mine and I was overwhelmed with the sense of warm adoration like there was nothing i could ever do to make him not adore me just for who I am.

But his inner voice speaks to me in many ways mainly though through my heart,When I spending time with him he will place words or thoughts into my mind and heart sometimes things to speak other times it's more of a personal conversation with him. On cc for instance I always speak my heart and often times words are placed on my heart to speak and I just have to speak it and I cannot stop typing like a maniac until it is spoken and sometimes there are things poured into the words I am to speak. Just today on a thread I spoke what was placed on my heart but I wasn't really excited about it, I often times fear I am to open with what I say and I speak a lot about things that he has done with me through me and others I also speak a lot about my spiritual experiences and so I am little nervous speaking about it all now as I don't want to irritate people.

But when I was lead to speak of what was spoken there was this fire I could feel burning inside me and the fire was poured into every word I typed, this normally is what happens when he places something on my heart to speak and is meant for someone even if I never know who it is for. his voice is not always something we hear sometimes it's him using us to speak his voice even if it's to ourselves he often times speaks to me through me. But the inner voice in our minds is not the way he normally works at least not through me he may work like this with others so i wouldn't discount it but discernment is vital it's easy to confuse our voice and even the enemies with his.

Absolutely. How else can the Holy Spirit guide us, and comfort us, if not by that inner voice that speaks to our conscience? I think this recognition is the inspiration behind those who made those childhood cartoons showing Satan tempting on the left shoulder while an angel on the right shoulder encourages the character to do the right thing. And when you do what is right, don't you feel comforted?

as far I i am aware of, Thomas pain was a dark occultist...anyway inner voice is explained in these two verse by Paul. its called our conscience................be blessed

Romans 2-14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;...

Listen, when there is a discussion about how God teaches I use quotes from The Bible a lot, I know Christians are not schizophrenic. Why not for an experiment go to a psychiatrist and say you have been listening to an inner voice and see what happens to you or go to a public place and broadcast it and see what happens ?
