Heh, there is a bit of a difference between being smart and being a nerd. Being smart is a character trait; being a nerd is a way of life. You can also be stupid and a nerd at the same time, it just isn't very common.

I think I used to be a nerd, but I'm not as much of one as I used to be. I used to be really into video games and was actually pretty addicted to them, but there are just some things that I've found really just have to go from my life if I'm really going to be living my life for Jesus like I should. I still play games, but not nearly as much (and when I'm actually in school, it's about once a month). I'm thinking that when I get married, I don't think I'm going to want video games in my home. If I marry someone who plays, then that would be different, but I just wouldn't want that to be something that could potentially causing relationship problems because I can't put the controller down. I really don't know; it's just a thought.

I'd also like to be able to avoid having a computer in my home once I'm out on my own, but I know that with the way the world is headed, that isn't really very practical. I'll need it for work and whatnot, probably.
See, I always made a distinction between socially awkward smart people and socially awkward non-smart people with obsessions(comics, games, Star Trek, etc). The former are nerds, the latter are geeks. It makes it easier to classify. But all of a sudden people with obsessions are now considered nerds instead of geeks, and it just confuses everything.

Oh, and then there are the dorks, who are just socially awkward.

It kind of annoys me when gamers are called nerds, because for so long I considered gamers geeks. You have to be smart to be a nerd.

We always want to slap labels on people. It is one of my pet hates as it creates barriers between people. Most people if we could be bothered to really get to know them, are individuals with personalities made up of varing amounts of different labels. How many screwed up people are running around in this world believing they are a particular type of person because someone told them they are.

I realy like my given birth name. Its a label I got quite use to as a child and now in my mid-life I wouldn't change it for the world. All the other labels people have thrown at me over the years haven't stuck quite as well. It's most likely because it was just a phase I was going through. But Rissa 77 is right. Child of God is one label I do like. I thing I'll put twice the amount of glue on that one.

Hey dothack

I have noticed that videogames, makes you a recluse, and destroys your ability to relate with others in a meaningful way. it also assists in making social situations awkward. ponder that brotha

Girls like guys who are interesting, and every girl has different interests. There is no one "formula" to what girls like. I know I would be bored to death with a jock because I don't really care about sports but to a girl who loves athletics he could be her dream boat. So find a girl who matches your interests and you'll have a better chance. Okay?

I work in a video game store and while you're not 100% wrong (I do see the odd-ball here and there) you're definitely enforcing a dead stereotype. Video games are interactive stories, and now that online playability is availiable it's made people more social and less of a recluse than ever. Kids play with their friends for hours, people talk to each other and make new friends on their headsets.

But even if that wasn't the case I've noticed an even more deeper trend to video game players- most of them tend to be really creative. They enjoy the idea of interacting with different worlds, like a step further from watching a movie or reading a book. They want to be involved more in a pretend environment. I think that's really awesome. But hey, I love video games so maybe I'm a little biased.

Yes definitely, however, social skills are hindered. Even with texting, lol even chatting online. People would rather talk to a computer you, rather than the real You. Also, there is a lot of meaning lost, with words on a screen.

In my life, I have seen how they make me a recluse, and anti-social, I get selfish, and that in no wise is Christ-like

Oh, that's a shame. I tend to be more social around a really good video game! The best summer I ever had was when my sister, my best friend and I played this one video game all summer long. We made jokes and drew comics and wrote our own fiction about the characters. I remember the creativity, excitement, and laughter just never ended. It was one of the best summers of my life, and I'll treasure it forever.

I suppose it was because I didn't just play a game, I interacted with it to the extreme. :) I love a good story, even when I read a good book I want to draw the main character and talk to someone about it. (Or write my own really awesome story). I get so inspired.

WOW, oh man, I hear so many stories about WOW. Ever heard of Widows of Warcraft? Those are women I really feel for. It's so wrong to lose your marriage to a computer game. That's one game I tried for three months and got bored of, I can't imagine playing it obsessively to the point that I had no life (or marriage).

I don't know what dragon game you mean. I have a dragon game for the xbox 360 though.

maybe different personality types, it affects in different ways. That's great you can do that, friend of mine who got me into gaming and etc, was going to school for video game design, but then he perused something else.

Probably for someone who, how do I say, is not, or was not emotionally stable. For instance anxiety problems, bouts of depression, anger problems, and also already existing social problems. It would probably be best to cut down. It's like alcohol for some, at least for me it was, I was able to drown out reality, and numb myself to the reality of my life in a video game. When I became Christian, I started as I matured to wean myself away, primarily because before I was saved I was not emotionally stable, Before Christ healed me I was Bipolar and depressed all the time, I am healed of that, Thank God, but I see the dark reality that excessive video games(for me) can cause.

In relation to the person who originally posted this, I am not judging, I just notice a lot of similarities in myself to your situation

I have kay kay, I have a sister whose friend that happened too, but he gave it up and changed before it got too bad.

There are people who die playing video games, or commit suicide.

My boyfriend is a computer nerd, like if you look it up Computer Nerd in the dictionary you will see his picture :p I personally think he's greattttt. I think the reason why most people think girls don't like computer nerds is because most guys don't know how to balance there relationship with their girlfriend and their computer. I think that's why I'm so content with my boyfriend being a nerdy pc gamer, because he knows what's important in life and can divide up his time and be wise about the way he spends his time. So, yes girls like those types of guys as long as they know how to treat a lady and are not just buried in their computer screen!

yes, unless their life completely revolves in computers, games. nd stuff... i mean, it's the same thing as having a bf who is completely consumed with his car and would rather clean his car than go with his girl in an important event... :) i personally think, computer geeks are smart... and smart guys are attractive i repeat! as long as their lives doesn't revolves in computers! :)

Yup, that's me, alright. If I don't feel immersed in a game, then I'm probably not going to play it. I've even got 3D glasses for my monitor. And I'll be paying on my new GTX 480 'til December.
